Kids television that you love to hate

How many of you have at least  one kids television show that bothers you so much?

Perhaps you will not allow your children to watch it, you need to leave the room when they do, or it actually makes your skin crawl. Admit it, there must be at least one or more of the childrens shows that gets on your last nerve.

When we found out that we were expecing for the first time, we let our family and friends know that there were two shows that were not acceptable in our eyes. We never wanted anything with Barney, you know the big purple dinosaur, thanks to being forced to watch too many of his videos when I worked in an educational store. His song makes me shudder to this day. The other no-no was the Teletubbies. Once again, too much of them when working retail in college. As an education major, I also had trouble with a show that did not talk properly. Just ask me what my opinion of Baby Bear on Sesame Street is, you will get quite an earful.

Back when NHL was really little I did not understand The Wiggles. Of course, he loved them. The singing and dancing kept his attention. It was wonderful when I needed to do something quickly. I could count on The Wiggles, not to babysit my child, but to keep him moving and singing. Since that time we have been to two Wiggles concerts and now JSL is becoming a huge Wiggles fan. He request their songs by demanding "Car Car" or "Quack Quack" frequently.

As NHL has grown his taste in programing change from week to week. Thank goodness we have been able to make him avoid Thomas. For some reason the slow pace of the show and voices just bother me. One that we have not been able to avoid recently is Dora the Explorer. NHL is intrigued by her teaching Spanish and even the little guy likes to dance to the music. On the rare occasision that Dora or Diego are on, I tend to tune them out.

The other night, JSL received a Diego giant pillow from Nana and Papa. He loved it and called it "Go-Go" thanks to the Diego theme song. Much to my delight, I captured the following video of JSL with Go-Go the other night. Please watch and see how much he "loves" Diego.

When I saw him doing this I kept thinking, wow I believe there are other characters that could use a nice dose of this!

Slippery snowtime session

Last winter JSL was too little to go out and play in the snow. This year it is quite different. Not only is he ready to go outside and play, but he is walking on his own.

Several weeks ago we had a pretty large snowstorm on a Friday. The next morning we all went out to shovel, play in the snow and watch the little guy play for the first time. I happened to capture video very early in his exploration. Here it is:

Not to worry, JSL quickly learned how to walk on the snow in his boots. After I ditched the camera, JSL was in the snow playing with his big brother and being pulled in a sled by Daddy. Of course, the only time he did not like the snow was when he tripped over his own two feet and face planted into a snow bank. Major tears resulted with a very cold face.

Ah, the joys of living in a place with cold and snow in the winter!

Disney on Ice – 100 Years of Magic

Twas the night before a snow storm and all through the arena, the people attending were thankful that they purchased tickets for the Thursday night show!

Last Thursday night we were gearing up for a HUGE weekend of snow. That was also the weekend that Disney on Ice was here for a bunch of shows. My parents had four tickets to take NHL and me. Thank goodness they wanted to see it on Thursday night. If we had selected another night we may not have been able to make it to the arena (Friday we had about a foot of snow and more Sunday).

Have you ever been to a Disney on Ice show?

If you have ever been to Disney World, Disneyland or any other Disney owned park, then you know they are the pros at merchandising. Well, Disney on Ice is 110% the same way. When you walked into the arena, both sides had at at least two merchandise stands,  two snack stands (with Disney cotton candy and snow cones), and multiple areas with photo taking stations (for a fee of course).

Disney motto of sell sell sell

It was really interesting to watch NHL. We walked around the area at least one complete time and stopped at each of the selling areas. He looked each time, but never asked for anything. After a while, Nana asked NHL if he would like something. He thought the Mickey Mouse Binoculars were really neat. They were reasonably priced, so Nana and Papa bought them for him.

New Mickey binoculars

Two years ago when Nana, JL and I took him to See Monsters Inc on Ice we bought him a work hat and program. To this day both of the boys still love the hard hat.

Next, it was time to go and find our seats. NHL walked along with Nana and his Mickey Mouse merchandise bag. When you walked into the arena, this is what you saw on the ice:

Ice before the show

Nana and Papa bought NHL some popcorn and we sat and waited for the show to begin. NHL sat there taking everything in. I quickly learned that my camera did not do a great job at photos, but the video was decent. I took a few short videos so NHL can enjoy them. Here is one of the start of the show (more will be uploaded later).

We all really enjoyed the show. Now NHL needs to catch up on some Disney movies since he has never seen Beauty and the Beast, Pinochio, and several others.

My question for this week:

Have you ever played the Dreidel game?

As previously mentioned I went into my son’s kindergarten class on Wednesday to play the dreidel game with them. Here are some of the new dreidels that I bought for our family last year on clearance (always looking for a bargain).

Lots of new dreidels

To get into the Chanukah spirit, since the Festival of Lights begins Sunday evening, I want to share a fun video. Several of my friends have posted this and sent links to it via e-mail. Even my grandmother (Hi Mimi) received an e-mail from a friend with this. Please enjoy Captain Smartpants singing Dreidel.

P.S. Be sure to enter in my Chanukah Shopping Fun – Game Giveaway. Don’t be fooled, this is great game for non-Jewish participants as well. The giveaway ends today!

Message from my 19 month old

Apparently singing songs with your new favorite word is all the rage among 19 months old. Can you guess what it is from the video?

Although really cute, hearing this over and over, and occassionally with a wagging finger can get old. My new challenge to JSL come up with a new song for your other favorite word –> Google!

Note – Sorry about the video. For some reason I could not FTP it today. Will try later when TechyDad is here. For now this works.
