My question for this week:

Have you ever played the Dreidel game?

As previously mentioned I went into my son’s kindergarten class on Wednesday to play the dreidel game with them. Here are some of the new dreidels that I bought for our family last year on clearance (always looking for a bargain).

Lots of new dreidels

To get into the Chanukah spirit, since the Festival of Lights begins Sunday evening, I want to share a fun video. Several of my friends have posted this and sent links to it via e-mail. Even my grandmother (Hi Mimi) received an e-mail from a friend with this. Please enjoy Captain Smartpants singing Dreidel.

My question for this week:

Do you like the cold and winter weather?

Today’s question is inspired by the mess that has taken place outside over the last 24 hours. It started with rain, moved onto sleet and freezing rain. Over night it was horrible. You could hear the ice pellets pounding on our house. The power flashed off at least twice and is still flickering now. No school today for kindergarten kid since trees and power lines are down all over. To say that it is bad would be an understatement. They said on the news that this is one of the worst ice storms that we have had in a very long time. My guess is some spots have close to an inch of ice on them. Imagine that on a tree or power line, it is not a good situation.

Here are photos taken this morning:

Major ice storm

1. Front walk way is skating rink, 2. Ice layer on tree out front, 3. Another tree out front and neighbor’s car, 4. Grass coated in ice in back yard, 5. Tree making me nervous in back, 6. Ice coating wires and tree by garage

The answer to my question is that I admire the beauty of snow, but hate ice. There is no such thing as driving or walking safely on it. Now I sit here and worry about hubby as he walks out the door to commute to work. Hopefully a lot of people are home today and the roads are treated well. I also worry about the trees near here under the weight of the ice. Hubby said a lot are down just a block away from here (one on a parked car). It is going to be an "interesting" day.

My question for this week:

Do you prefer making cakes or cupcakes? Why do you like one over the other and what is your favorite cake/cupcake to make?

For the last year or so I have been VERY into baking and decorating cupcakes. Of course, it is not limited to traditional cupcakes. Since we bought silicone cupcake holders we have been using them to make muffins, mini cakes, and more! Here are some that I made for the Election Day bake sale at NHL’s school:

Mini pumpkin chocolate chip cakes

For Thanksgiving I experimented with a favorite recipe. I took the fruit swirl cake that I love and made mini ones again. Here they are below with hubby’s peanut butter cookies.

Just a reminder to think outside of the box for your holiday baking!

My question for this week:

What was your favorite part of Thanksgiving? If you did not celebrate, what are your plans for this weekend?

There were so many parts of yesterday that I enjoyed. It was a fabulous day relaxing in the morning with my three boys. The two little guys loved watching the parade and announcing all of the balloons that they recognized. JL and I baked things to take to Thanksgiving dinner, so the house smelled amazing. I managed to do a quick load of laundry and was not rushed. We got super deals at CVS when we stopped in for shopping before going to dinner. The best part was being at my Aunt S and Uncle M’s house with all of our family for an absolutely delicious meals together. It was priceless to see NHL and JSL interact with everyone.

Thanksgiving photos coming soon!

My question for this week changed thanks to events on Thursday. I had planned on doing something to link up with a bloggy friend. Unfortunately, plans changed because I can not think clearly enough to do it properly. I will explain below.

This week my question is:

Have you ever had pink eye? If your child has, do you have any tips on how to wrangle them (aside from sitting on them) for drops?

Yesterday at around 10:00 in the morning my called ID showed a number from the school district. I was hoping that it was the OT calling about things. No, it was not her. The person on the other end simply said to me "Hi Mrs ___  guess who I have here with me?"

Notice that she did not identify who she was. I was able to figure it out. Apparently the pinkeye monster that has been wrecking havoc in NHL’s kindergarten class got him. I asked if it was just irritated from forgetting his allergy medication. She agreed that it may be from that and would give it until after lunch to see. Meanwhile I called our doctor’s office to get something called in quick because I knew it was not good. The nurse had already sent another child home with goo coming out of her eye, another was home sick with it and 4+ kids had it last week, plus I was dealing with it last weekend.

Bad vibes were coming from this entire thing. Sure enough at about noon the nurse called back. His eye was more swollen and getting really red now. I packed up JSL and went to school to pick up NHL. By 1:30 we were on our way to the pharmacy to get the drops that were called in. NHL was NOT happy about this. He recalled the last pinkeye that he had just a month ago.

Exhausted after eye drops

Yesterday I literally sat on him to get the drops in. Sure he may only be five, but man the kid is strong. When he went to bed his eye was really red and we warned him when he got up it may be stuck shut. Sure enough at 11:00 he woke up and it was crusted over. It happened again at 6:00 this morning. I am worried because his eye looks really bad after 4 sets of drops now. The worst part, I am not sure if a bump/abcess like object is forming under his eye by his cheek bone. I will be keeping a close eye on it now and see how it goes.

Poor monkey

Susan, I promise I will do something even more special ASAP. For now I must work on wiping eye boogers and washing our hands and everything else in the house. WIth any luck Thanksgiving break next week will help to wipe out the pinkeye that has invaded NHL’s classroom.
