New Times at Disney

During our recent trip to Walt Disney World, TechyDad and I were able to experience a lot of Disney firsts. It was our first time flying alone since we had kids, our first time staying at Art of Animation, first time meeting Goofini, and more. Some of these seemed perfect to share this week for the “Disney Time” theme at Focused on the Magic.

Disclosure: TechyDad was invited to the New Fantasyland media event December 5-7. Disney paid for his travel, our park tickets, room, along with some extra surprises. I was his guest and invited to special events, but paid for my travel and an extra night at the resort. Also note that Disney never asked me to blog about this event. As a long time Disney fan, it is my pleasure to share my experiences.

Magical Disney Coaster Moments

You either love roller coasters or you do not. I grew up going on them at a lot of amusement parks across the country with my father and brother. I fell in love with the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith at Disney’s Hollywood Studios the first time I rode it. Back in May 2009, I went on it with my father while the boys and my mother waited for us. It was Mother’s Day and it was fun to go on a coaster with my dad.

It really was love at first ride. The music, the lights, and the darkness make it an experience. It truly is the smoothest coaster that I have been on and I hoped to share it with others in my family one day.

Fast forward to this past April. My almost nine year old son was finally tall enough to go on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and even TechyDad was interested in facing some fears at Disney World. TechyDad, NHL, Papa, and I went on together while JSL and Nana wandered around waiting for us. TechyDad and NHL did not know that the photo is taken at the start of the ride. As you can see, one had his eyes closed, one is feeling the force of the blast off, and even I blinked.

Definitely a magical memory and I was SO proud of TechyDad and NHL for trying the ride. Needless to say, when we were finished and the line wasn’t too bad – only two of us went right back on. Yes, it was father and daughter time with Aerosmith once again.

Dad had me laughing the entire time, as you can see above. It really was a magical end to our vacation.

Do you have a time when you rode with your parent or child that was special and captured by a photo?

Always a Time to Celebrate at Disney

Whether you are visiting a Disney park for a birthday, honeymoon, anniversary, or no real reason at all – there is always a reason to celebrate. During our last visit to Walt Disney World, we were there to celebrate the opening of New Fantasyland. We would also be leaving hours before my birthday. As we went into the parks for a few last hours, we happened to get there just in time to experience most of the Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It! Street Party at The Magic Kingdom. The fun atmosphere seemed to take away the sadness about going home soon and the photos seem perfect for the “Celebrate” theme this week.

Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time, TechyDad and I were whisked away to a magical land in Florida. Most people know this destination as Walt Disney World. We were there to experience the opening of the New Fantasyland on December 6. New Fantasyland Opening

New lands filled with Ariel, Belle, and circus characters were waiting to officially be opened via a royal celebration. Ginnifer Goodwin came out to begin the ceremony at Cinderella’s Castle. You may know her better as Snow White on the ABC hit show Once Upon A Time.

Ginnifer introduced Jordin Sparks, the winner of season six of American Idol, who came to sing a medley of songs from Disney movies. Of course, she was joined by a large group of Disney character celebrities.

At the end of the beautiful medley, Mickey Mouse came out along with Tom Staggs, chairman of the Walt Disney Company’s Parks and Resorts division, to finish up the presentation and really get the celebration started. This is what it looked like moments after:

Opening of New Fantasyland

It truly was a moment that dreams are made of for a life long Disney fan. My question to you this week:

If you could have been at the opening of a location or destination over history, what would it have been and why?

Being Brave and Channeling My Inner Merida

Disney’s Brave burst onto the scene last year and everyone was talking about Merida and how feisty she was. I recall people mentioning what a great role model she was for young girls. We finally got to sit down and watch Brave the other day. Our entire family was swept away into the movie. I adore it for many reasons. One of those is that Merida is not fixated on her appearance. She loves her hair, wants to keep it out, and literally tosses it into the wind.

The Disney princess has no problems allowing her frizzy, long, red hair fly. Imagine that – not spending a fortune trying to tame your tresses. While out and about after watching the movie, the wind kicked up and my hair was down. It was flying around. I noted to TechyDad that I was channeling my “Inner Merida” at the time. Of course, in hind sight, it was really my outer Merida.

Merida and her frizzy hair in Brave

This winter, I have a feeling I may toss my hair up, ease off the Frizz-Ease items pictured above and allow my hair to be free. Yes, I will be channeling Merida while I just keep swimming along from day to day. The reality is that frizzy hair or not, I need to spend more time focusing on more important things in life.

Can you identify with Merida in any way? I would love to know how you view this spunky princess and if you are comfortable letting your hair down.
