Exploring with Watercolors

Summer vacation is here and, when the weather is nice, we try to head outside as much as possible. Of course, lately Mother Nature has been giving us a lot of rain. The other day, I stumbled upon an unopened package of watercolors. Thank goodness, I was able to find another unopened Crayola watercolors so each of the boys would have their own.

Exploring with Watercolor paints

NHL has painted with watercolors before in school. He immediately asked me to have some crayons. He wanted to do use the Crayon Resist method that he learned about. So I pulled out some crayons and let the boys explore the watercolors. As you can see, my little guy was very serious. He was trying to figure out how much water to use to get the vibrancy right.

Watercolors exploration

When JSL was finished, this was his masterpiece.

First watercolors painting

The little guy loves to make items with rainbows and, typically, he will show up in those pictures, just like the one above with the pot of gold.

The next day, JSL asked to paint again. This time, he wanted to test out making some of the Monster’s University characters. He pulled out his figures and used them as inspiration. Confession, I did help him a little on these. He is six, but most of the time I simply drew the eyeballs and a few other details in crayons. He did all of the painting. Here are the four that he has done to date.

Monsterous watercolor paintings

JSL really wanted to protect them, so I pulled out the laminator and tossed the ones he had already finished. In case you were wondering, those are Mike, Squishy, Sulley, and Johnny. To surprise the boys, I just bought them something else to help with the painting. Check out the new Crayola watercolors. Yes, there are actually 24 colors to pick from when being creative. No more being stuck with eight colors.

Do you or your children like to use watercolors? I would love to know if you do or have specific projects that they enjoy. We’re always looking for more fun projects to try out when the weather keeps us inside.

Disney Letter L

Looking at Disney in terms of letters is a lot of fun. This week, I was a bit distracted with my son getting braces on to work on my post early. So at dinner last night, we brainstormed on Disney Letter “L” items. The kids came up with some perfect items, and of course some silly ones. Then, it was up to me to track down photos from Walt Disney World vacations to fit the bill. Below are the ones that I selected for this week.

Lion King area of Art of Animation Resort

Lumiere at Enchanted Tales with Belle

Lunch at Contempo Cafe

Lightning McQueen Stunt Show at Hollywood Studios

Scar statue at Art of Animation Resort

LEGO Seven Dwarves in Downtown Disney

Little Mermaid area of Art of Animation Resort

Summer Time Fun

Last Friday, I sent the boys off to a half day of school. They went into the building as a kindergartener and fourth grader. When they greeted me in the early afternoon, they were officially first and fifth graders. As they walked down the road to our car, they held hands.

Last Day of School

It was a sweet moment and made me happy and sad at the same instant. Recently, it dawned on me that we will only have one more year of these moments. My boys are just shy of four years apart and are separated by four grades in school. Next year, NHL will be finishing up elementary school and moving on to middle school (HOLD ME). For some reason, I thought they would be in high school for a year, but they will not. The same year that NHL graduates from high school, my baby will be graduating from middle school.

So excuse me for a little bit. I need to take time to cherish the moments here with the boys. It seems like yesterday that they were both so little and now they are growing up before my eyes. We will be making the most out of the summer and started that this weekend with a family trip to pick strawberries.

Summer Strawberry Picking

I am not entirely sure what we will do next, but I know it will be special and hopefully give the boys memories that they will cherish and think back on when they get older.

Twelve Years and Counting

Walt Disney World Anniversary Button

Twelve years ago today, I married JL who later became TechyDad. On that beautiful June day, we were with our family and friends at the synagogue I grew up in. We were so young and naïve at the time.

All of the preparations for this day were finally real and we could celebrate the beginning of our life together.

My family under the chuppah

It’s funny looking back at the photos from our wedding. While I remember some of the things that took place, many do not ring a bell because we were so into the moment meeting and greeting everyone that came to be with us. I would not change much, but would probably stop to step back and watch a bit more. Of course, my mind was a bit distracted. TechyDad and I were so excited about our honeymoon. We saved to go on an amazing Walt Disney World trip, his first ever.

With Mickey Mouse 12 almost 12 years later

JL, thank you for always being there the last 12+ years. No matter what happens, I know you are in my corner and cheering me on. I can not wait to see where the next years take us and what new magical moments will come our way.

Museums and Planetariums

We recently became members of our local science museum. I have to admit, this was the best investment we have made in a long time. Not only is it a great place for our family to visit together, we can all learn while we are there.

Fun at miSci in Schenectady

The boys have learned about optical illusions, magnetism, medical science, and many other items thanks to displays changing at the Museum of Innovation and Science in Schenectady. Recently, the Notion of Motion exhibit arrived from San Francisco’s Exploratorium. Learning about Physics has never been so much fun! We have also gone to all three of the current planetarium shows. The boys are now fascinated with stargazing and hope to check out more constellations and planets in our sky this summer.

The variety of exhibits, rotating Hands-On Science Classes (the Nano Technology one was fantastic), and alternating planetarium shows make our museum membership even more exciting. Then, something even more gigantic is coming on June 29. DINOSAURS! will be in Schenectady until the end of September and we are going to visit with them a little early next week. Yes, we were invited to the members preview and the kids are SO excited. We promise to take lots of photos and share more once we are done visiting the T-Rex and other dinosaur friends. Dinosaurs are coming to miSci in Schenectady

So my question to you this week:

Have you ever had a museum membership with your family? If you have, I would love to hear about it. If you have not, what museum have you been to with your family that you enjoyed? Interested to hear about new places to explore since our membership allows us to go to a lot of places for free!
