Fun on a Snow Mountain

Dear NHL and JSL,

This morning, Nana called to invite us over to play outside. Thanks to all of the snow that fell yesterday, they had a plow come to clear their driveway. The result was a monster snow mountain in their backyard. After lunch, we packed up our things and went over to Nana and Papa’s backyard. This picture shows just how tall it was compared to NHL.

Snow mountain almost as tall as NHL

The two of you had SO much fun romping, sledding, digging, and climbing in the snow. Both boys playing in the snow mountain

Here are some shots of NHL:

And some of JSL:

The two of you, and Daddy, had an amazing time playing together and making wonderful memories. I know I will sleep well remembering your laughter tonight. Of course, I may be dreaming of laughter at Disney World in the warmth and not the snow.

Love,

Mommy

Making New Hockey Memories

The smell of clean ice in the air, the cool breeze whirling around, and jerseys galore. This is what we experienced yesterday when we took the boys to see the Albany Devils hockey game. The minute we stepped into the arena, it was like déjà vu. You see, back before I met TechyDad, I was a River Rats season ticket holder. Back in the day I went to every home game and my amazing seat was located just behind the home bench. Ah, the memories of games gone by. Watching players like Patrick Elias, Petr Sykora, Mike Dunham, and countless others start their careers here and move on to the NHL.

The kids were sick of being cooped up in the house and thanks to Time Warner Cable, they had an amazing deal on tickets. All tickets were $10 or $5 depending on where you sit. So we packed up the kids and went to the early start game. While I went to buy tickets, the boys went and saw the Devil Dawg.

Greeting the Devil Dawg

When the players came out for warm-ups, we made our way down to the ice. The kids really enjoy being down there and can see more of the action. Pre-Game Time

Of course, the players are always great with kids. At one point, they flipped out a puck. NHL happened to be in just the right place. It bounced, he ran, and this is what he got:Caught a Puck

Then JSL was excited to see the zamboni. Yes, my three year old was thrilled to see the red and blue zambonis circle the ice getting it ready for the game. Zamboni Time

Of course, this also gave TechyDad some time to test out his camera and get some photos of the new jumbo tron that the Times Union Center recently installed.New Above Center Ice

JSL held onto his team roster and watched the first period without fussing too much. Sure he was upset I refused to give him a snack right away, but eventually he kept watching.Checking on Player Stats

Then it was time to stretch and see another visitor that was in the building. The boys went to wait to meet Dora. It is a sad moment in my hockey life to admit it. My three year old son was more excited to see the zamboni and meet Dora the Explorer than watch hockey. *sigh*Meeting Dora and Boots

Luckily, NHL got into the game. He was intrigued with why the players went into the penalty box, why the ref had an orange band on his arm, and more. I think you can see, he was a very happy camper:My Happy NHL

The game eventually ended in a 3-3 tie. We quickly went to a five minute OT period where a lot of penalties came. JSL declared that the game was taking FOREVER. When told that if the Devils would score a goal we would be done he started to loudly cheer “Let’s go Devils!” Of course, a goal would not come during that time. We were able to witness a shootout. We sat behind the Albany goalie (Caruso) who stopped all of the shots that he faced. With one lone goal scored on ex-River Rat goalie Leighton – the Albany Devils won the game 4-3. The Final Score

We had a fun time at the Albany Devils game and I look forward to making more hockey memories with my family. Next time, I may feel the need to break out my game worn Sharifijanov River Rats jersey. Hmmmm……

Missing Our Family Weekend

Dear NHL and JSL,

This weekend, we were supposed to go away. Cousin BA turns one on Monday, so his birthday party is today. We were going to spend a long weekend there to visit with family and let all of you have fun and play. Unfortunately, the two of you have not been feeling well. Daddy and I decided that it was too long of a drive to do with nobody sleeping well and not feeling great.

We spent the morning cleaning the upstairs room again. The two of you are so excited about having the play space. I think I am looking forward to seeing the floor in the living room since the toys will be moving.

To try to make up for things, we are getting ready to have family movie time. We are catching up on some Disney movies that the two of you have not seen. First up is Peter Pan. Thanks to Disney Junior the two of you now want to watch it and are interested in seeing Captain Hook.

We better hurry, I think Piggy may eat all of the popcorn that Daddy just made!

Piggy Popcorn Time

Love,

Mommy

Music Box Debacle and Despicable Me

Dear NHL and JSL,

This morning, we decided to surprise both of you with a trip to Lowe’s for their Build and Grow event. We had not gone to a Lowe’s event in a while because they seemed too complicated and lacked reliable instructions. Still, when I saw the project this week, I thought it was cute and would make a fun present.

When we arrived, you saw the project for the first time. The mission was to build a music box for Valentine’s Day. 50 people had actually signed up for the event, so it was held on quickly put together platform “tables” with bucket chairs for people that wanted them. At this point, we should have run far, far away.

Project fail at Lowe's

We stayed and it quickly became clear to us that it was not a good situation. The instructions were NOT clear (Home Depot does a much better job) and several times parts broke when we tried to hammer a nail in. Daddy and I finally decided to pack you both up and head to another location. Both of you were very upset and JSL even cried. I do not believe that we will be heading back to Lowe’s anytime soon. Just not worth the stress involved in what should be a fun activity.

We went to a few locations, went home for lunch, and then went to the library for some more books and things. When we got home, we decided to watch Despicable Me together. It was so nice sitting on the couch as a family and laughing together at the movie. I hope we can do this again soon.

Love,

Mommy

Saturday Surprise at Home Depot Thanks to the Ice

Dear NHL and JSL,

This morning we decided that we had to head to Home Depot to get some calcium chloride to put on the ice dams. Daddy and I heard that if we put that into some panty hose, that it would help to make channels for the melting mess. Our hope is that this project will help us avoid water coming into our bedrooms.

As we pulled into Home Depot parking lot, we realized it was the first Saturday of the month. That is when they do the Kids Workshop projects set up. After we grabbed 50 pounds of calcium chloride, I took NHL to check out what the project was.

Project for today

We started the project together, then Daddy helped JSL to get started. You both enjoyed doing this and decorating it when you were finished.

Working on projects

Luckily the project did not take a long time, so we were back home to set up what we hope will prevent the roof from leaking in. Here are your finished projects at home.

Finished Heart Shelf Project

Now we are keeping busy by cleaning the room upstairs. Both of you are so excited to have this space for a playroom. Hopefully we can work together as a team to get this going and finished soon.

Love,

Mommy
