Happy Passover – 2008 Seder 1

As I sit down here to type, both of the Passover Seders are over and done with. Although it was a lot of work for JL, Mom, Dad, and I to do both of them at my parent’s house, it was well worth it. Thank you again Mom and Dad for working with us to make it happen.

We started the morning off getting something out to eat before we started cooking. Then we realized that we needed a few quick things at the store for the Seder. We stopped at a store for a new peeler and some sneakers for NHL. We did not realize his current ones were getting snug on him. We bought a pair of more plain ones and the following that he loved.

NHL's new sneakers

Then we went to the grocery store for a quick stop and back to our house. At home we packed up more Passover items and then went to my parents to work on the meal for the evening. We made a lot of food including charoset, brisket  (thanks to Mimi and Aunt T), sweet and sour chicken, oven roasted sweet potatoes (JSL’s favorite) and cauliflower. In addition to this we had matzoh ball soup, hard boiled eggs, dried fruit (thanks Aunt T), strawberries, and some brownies, cookies and jelly candy. Here take a look:

Seder Foods - Yummy!

The seder plate and table looked really great thanks to my mother getting everything so pretty. This is what the table looked like before we sat down.

And the seder plate is here:

Just before the seder both of the boys fell asleep. They were exhausted so we let them sleep while we talked and finished preparing everything. We were in no real rush. Our seder was the four of us, my parents and Aunt T. See how quiet they were:

Naps before the seder

NHL and JSL finally woke up and were ready to head to the table. NHL was thrilled to see he had a special setting. At his spot were the 4 Question finger puppets all ready to go.

Then it was time to put the matzoh bib on JSL. What do you think his reaction was? Here it is:

Matzoh bib time

Eventually he warmed up to it and was amused by the kippah we put on him.

Put on your kippah it's time to celbrate

Thank goodness for the naps. It really helped the boys to be patient while we did the seder before the meal part.

We had a really nice first seder. I think JSL enjoyed his first Passover experience . . . especially the sweet potatoes and all of the attention from everyone. He ate some matzoh, but eventually realized it was not anything he loved and started to toss it. NHL was into participating this year and really wanted to help us read the haggadah. . . probably next year he will be able to do it.

Seder 2 also went smoothly thanks to lots of yummy leftovers and two new additions to the meal. More on this later.

P.S. A special thanks to JL for being flexible and working your butt off to kosher everything for the seders.

Weekend of baby walking, knitting and Passover preparations

This weekend was very busy for all of us in Angel Land. We had a 50th birthday party for our neighbor Saturday. The party was very nice. We were able to see many of the people who had become strangers over the winter months. NHL went with us, but we brought JSL to stay with Nana and Papa. He went there a sweet baby who could crawl and get into mischief. He was returned to us a determined child who wanted to walk holding on to anything and everything. He learned to walk with a ride on toy. Nana and Papa actually gave him his birthday present early and he is in LOVE with it. Photos to come later (no time to edit now). The nice thing we just keep him up and walking and he gets lots of energy out easily. Unfortunately it means his hands are higher and able to get into more.

I changed my mind, here is a sneak peek. . .

Decisions. . . decisions. . . decisions. . .

*ACK*  – My baby is growing up way too quickly!

Before the weekend I finished a washcloth that I had promised NHL when he was sick. He asked me to make him something new and selected one that looked like Snoopy (free pattern found here). This is what it looked like when I was finished.

This morning the last rows of another knitting group were revealed. Once again ten rows were given daily and at the end everyone has the same great cloth. This one was from Shirley’s Knitting Knook Group on Yahoo and designed by Melanie of Lil Knit of This & That. This was the first KAL of the new group and is adorable. I believe I saw that Shirley called it Showers in Spring, but not sure what the official name is.

NHL went out for the morning/afternoon with Nana and Papa. While they did this we went to purchase Passover groceries since it is just around the corner. We spent an obscene amount of money on kosher for Passover products. Although our receipt showed that we saved $30 – I did not smile. The only part I was happy about was our deal on diapers. The store had a deal on big boxes of Pampers for $19.99. I had a P&G $2.00 coupon and the grocery store was doubling P&G coupons today. Thanks to this I was able to get JSL 72 diapers for $16 – not too shabby!

After putting away groceries and eating lunch, we went to pick up NHL and set up my parents new wireless printer. When we came back home I was set to dry the load of laundry that I put in this morning. Little did I know that I would take on another project. While putting things away I noticed that JSL barely has any clothing that actually fits. I hauled out all of the containers of 0-12 month items, put things away and took some out. Then I went and brought the 18-24 month things up. I decided to put all of those things into the wash. Then I made sure that everything that was 24 month and 2T was ready to grab easily for later in the summer. I certainly got a work out going up and down the stairs to the basement more times than I can remember.

Randoms thoughts:

  • My baby is going to be one in just over a month – WAHHHHHHH!
  • Plans need to be made and set for the 1st birthday party that we will be having on Mother’s Day.
  • Passover is coming way too quickly. . . I am NOT ready for this.
  • I want to knit tonight, but I think I am too tired. I am working on a back scrubber for JL (he actually requested this).
  • New Moon is sitting and gathering dust waiting for me to read.
  • Wednesday I am going to NHL’s Seder at school – it should be so cute!
  • Thursday JSL goes to the dentist. Although he has been before they are counting this as his first official visit.
  • NHL is having problems breathing again (he is winded just talking). He will likely need to go to a specialist to figure out the cause and to help us treat it successfully.
  • Who Needs Sleep by Barenaked Ladies is my theme song – really it is!

The “sick” week in photo review

Now that everyone is as healthy as we have been in months (I will not dare to say we are healthy – that would be bad news), it is time to play some catch up. Last week NHL was home sick from school and I then had what he was ill with, so blogging took a back seat.

***Note to self: Be sure to work on the new rules of sharing with NHL. There are limits that are acceptable – flu is not included!

Last week I blogged, but I did not write as much as I have in the past since I was so exhausted at the end of the day. Thankfully I had the energy to take photos. Here are some highlights of the week gone by.

On Monday (3/24) JSL decided to try NHL’s Doodle Pro. He had fun with it at first and then realized that his big brother was missing.

I think I will try this. . .

He set off on a mission to find NHL in their room. This was by far one of his longest crawling adventures to date!

 Little brother on a mission

Finally he arrived at the destination of choice.

There he is - big brother and Daddy too

On Wednesday (3/26) I gave each of the boys a little gift. I wanted to give NHL something for doing his nebulizer treatment. JSL received a Fisher Price Little People egg that had a little boy in it. It was an Easter toy, but aside from the egg holding it you would never know. I was a sport for $1 (and the next day they were ten cents). JSL was in LOVE with his new toy. He would throw it out in front of himself and crawl to it. Here he is playing with me while NHL slept on the couch.

Come and get it!

What?

By Friday (3/28) NHL was going stir crazy from being in the house all week. We had to come up with things to keep him busy. All of this while Mommy was getting a fever and horrible body aches.

Finished within seconds

Cover that cough!

On Sunday (3/30) I was feeling slightly better. I forced myself to do all of the laundry from the week that had not been done. NHL went to his room for being naughty and actually fell asleep. At the same time JSL fell asleep in an interesting position on Daddy.

Sleeping in Daddy's lap

After both boys were up from their naps, JSL decided he wanted his sippy cup. He noticed that he was under the dining room table. I thought it was hilarious how he was hunting for the cup. I grabbed my camera. Soon after this JL got his out and was shooting away with me.

Adventures to a quiet spot

NHL even got into the act, but he apparently forgot his camera.

NHL joins the fun

 Fun photo shoot

At one point both JL and I were taking a shot at the exact same time. The result of the front and back shot of this moment is really neat (also know that I was taking this photos blind since my hands were under the table and my head above).

The Cameras duel

In the end we gave him some quiet time after bombarding him with all of the flashes from the camera. As you can see he just wanted to drink some water and read the newspaper!

My quiet thinking place

So that is a sick week in review via photos of some memorable moments.

102 is not a nice number

No, 102 is not a nice number at all. This is especially true if you are talking about my temperature this morning. The sweet little boy pictured below shared very well with me. I ache all over, have chills that make my entire body shake, pounding headache, and the lovely fever is present to boot.

So tired

Never doubt that a child likes to share in our house . . . especially an illness like the flu.

*groan*  – it hurts to type. I was shivering in bed before whining to JL that I want to knit. Unfortunately it is difficult to knit when every bone and muscle in my body aches. Who knew that my fingers and wrists could pulse?!?!  I miss knitting – no I take that back. I really miss being healthy and being sickie free. This of course would allow me to knit, read, clean (man I must really be sick if I just typed that), and do piles of laundry that have grown this week.

The good news (yes there is some) is that NHL is feeling much better. After being cooped up in the house for the last week NHL was finally allowed to go out. Nana took him for a special day with her. They started off going to breakfast and then went to see Horton Hears a Who. NHL had a very nice time and was talking about their adventure to the theater all evening.

Thanks to my mother taking NHL, JL was able to assist me with JSL. The poor little monkey was so upset that big brother was gone. He kept crawling around looking for him and calling his name. He was thrilled at one point when NHL called and talked with him on the phone.

On that note the iboprofen is starting to kick in (hot flash starting as temperature falls). I best be off to rest while I am able to. Hopefully I will dream about a house free of sickies!
