CardsDirect – $50 Giveaway

For years now, I have collected note cards and other types of stationary. Sure, sending out an e-mail is quick and easy, but I still love to write a good old fashioned note to family and friends. Oh and yes, we send out holiday cards to family members when the stamp often costs more than the card itself.

As a member of Global Influence, I was offered the opportunity to have a CardsDirect giveaway. Of course, I said yes for my readers since their website and products intrigued me. Heads up, I will also be receiving  a thank you $50 gift card of my own for hosting this giveaway.

New Price Chopper Building and Conference Announcement

Being a blogger has opened up doors that I never imagined I would walk though. This was literally the case a few weeks ago. Christina (Cutestkidever) and I were personally invited to tour the new corporate Price Chopper building in Schenectady, NY. We had been told prior to going that only the people that worked there had seen many of the places were were being taken. No media had been given a tour at this point since they were just moved into the facilities. Talk about being honored.

Price Chopper Logo

The world of Social Media and blogging truly made this tour possible. Had I not seen a Tweet on Twitter, gone to the Price Chopper page on Facebook and signed up for their Cook’s Ham event – this would not have happened. While at the Cook’s event at Price Chopper, Christina and I started to chat with Heidi and Liz about plans that we had for a local blogging conference. After the event, we continued to be in contact via Twitter/Facebook/e-mail/phone. While talking about the ideas we had for a blogging event in the area, I was asked if I we would consider something a little different. Of course, my answer was yes and I was told I would hear more soon.

This is where a big thank you to Mr. Jerry Golub is in order. He is Price Chopper’s new President & COO and is very aware of the importance of Social Media. He asked Heidi to invite us for a personal tour of their new building. Of course, we said yes!

New Price Chopper building has LEED gold rating

This new corporate building is big news in the area. The new state of the art building has many green features to be energy efficient for the 700 Price Chopper employees that will work there. Even bigger was the initiative to transform what was once polluted brownfield into a usable corporate space. To read more about the building, The Business Review has more details about the new $30M corporate facility.

When you drive up to the Price Chopper building, you immediately notice the size of the building. Then you start to see the whole picture. The facility is gated and has amazing security. When I drove up, I was told where to park and proceed in to check into the building. When Christina arrived, we went into the building to the security desk. They found our names on the guest list and asked for our drivers licenses to make us guest badges. At this point, they called Heidi and Liz to let them know we were here.

Once we were done giving security our information, Heidi, Liz and Maureen came to meet us in the lobby. I wish I had taken a photo of this area, but had not taken my camera out at this point. Not to worry, the photo taking permission came right after this and I started to take some photos.

One of the stops on the tour is the giant conference area. Can you see where I am going with this?

Conference room possibilitiesrice Chopper

The ballroom like room is sectioned off into three smaller rooms that can be opened. The room has a lot of AV/technological opportunities for something like a blogging conference. Round tables could be set up for networking and the ability to live blog/Tweet from any event thanks to Wifi availability. Christina and I kept imagining who would be up at the podium talking to all of the bloggers that come to our event. Yes, it was becoming more real with every step of the tour.

Heidi, Liz and Maureen also took us to more behind the scenes areas. We saw smaller meeting rooms and back rooms that were not quite set up yet. One of the locations not completely set up was the new photography lab/kitchen area. When we walked into this room we were greeted with shrimp on a barbeque right in the area and the computer monitors set up to create the Price Chopper ads for the coming weeks. They explained that a kitchen would be there to help with preparations of their own displays. In addition to that, one side of the room would be used for the Kids Cooking Club segments with Jodie Fitz that are available online.

Next, we walked into the cafeteria that is in the building for Price Chopper employees. My first thought was that it felt like I was at one of the Quick Service dining areas at Disney World. In my mind, this is a HUGE compliment. The menus were on flat screen monitors, there was a clean modern feel. Here are a few views:

Cafeteria within the new building

I could definitely imagine break out sessions in here and/or a meet and greet time during a conference.

Next, we were taken to the back of the cafeteria into a special room. The surprise was on us. We would be participating in a quality control/taste testing exercise. The following was set up on the table for each of us. We were testing white grape juice, apple sauce, chocolate chip cookies and rice crisp cereal.

A surprise taste testing

Megan and Jane explained that they had done a similar exercise at a local middle school to show the students how often it is next to impossible to tell the difference between brand name and store products. Of course, they also showed the kids the math involved when the identities of the items marked A and B were revealed. Price Chopper uses this room, with a kitchen to keep quality control on their store items. They have different groups of people that do this to tell their input on taste, texture, look and feel compared to the brand name twin. It is not surprising that on almost all we were not able to tell much if any differences and several cases liked the Price Chopper brand item more. This was not only an educational/eye opening experience, but a lot of fun. Hmmm. . . something else for a conference perhaps?!

Just as we were finishing up with this, Jerry Golub came to meet with us. I have to admit, I was even more impressed with his dedication to social media, his employees and the community in person. Mr. Golub explained why he feels Twitter, Facebook, and blogging are important to companies. In addition to this, he made me laugh by saying how funny it was to see me blog one day about ham and the next about shopping for Passover.

After Mr. Golub left us, we brain stormed a little about the possibility of having our blogging conference at the Price Chopper corporate building. We had so many ideas in our head, but not enough time to fully develop them. We talked about a good time for one and what we would like to do. After this we went to lunch in the gorgeous cafeteria and chatted a bit more.

So, what have we decided for our Capital District blogging conference?

Rather than rush to put something together for July, we will be pushing it back a little and changing a few things. Here are the tentative details:

Who: Anyone near or far may come and join the festivities where we hope you will be able to meet a lot of new people and network up a storm. Details for out of town guests wishing to stay over night will be available soon

What: Blogging/Social Media Conference to learn more, meet new people and have the chance to network in person

When: Saturday, October 2, 2010 from approximately 9 to after dinner

Where: The brand new Price Chopper building in Schenectady, NY

How: More details on pricing coming soon. Still need to talk to the caterer on the specifics for the day and will get back to you ASAP.

Why: Why not?! There has never been a blogging conference in Upstate NY and we want to begin this tradition for those in the Northeast to have the opportunity.

I would like to thank Price Chopper for making this conference a possibility. Thanks to you opening up your doors, our dream is now going to be a reality. We look forward to working with everyone over the next few months to finalize the details to share with bloggers who will be coming to the event this fall.

If you have any questions please let us know. As soon as more details are available we will keep you posted and have a special sign up website up for purchasing tickets to the conference.

Please save the date and we hope to see you in our area in October.

TheAngelForever

Disclosure: I was invited to the Price Chopper corporate building for a tour, lunch and to discuss using it for a conference facility. Much to my surprise we were given a taste test and some grocery items to take home to use with our families. No blog post was expected or compensation given.

Lullaby Renditions of Journey

It’s no secret that many babies, older children and even adults like to fall asleep listening to music. My oldest son, NHL, has gotten used to this. Music in his room at night helps to relax him and get him to sleep faster. TechyDad and I have no problem with this. The only issue that we had was the same CD getting "old" after 365+ playings.

rockabye baby logo

Several months ago, this stale bedtime music routine changed. I was contacted by Rockabye Baby! to do a review of a few of their lullaby rendition CD. At that time, I had reviewed lullyby renditions of Guns n’ Roses along with lullby renditions of Aerosmith. To read more about those CDs and our thoughts head over to my review.

NHL has a great appreciation for music. He loved listening to new artists and enjoys singing along. When Rockabye Baby! contacted me again about their lullby renditions of Journey that was released in February, I immediately agreed. This was a nice chance to introduce both of our boys to another popular music icon in a unique way.

Lullaby Renditions of Journey

More about Rockabye Baby! lullaby renditions of Journey:

( Los Angeles ) "Who’s Crying Now?" If those sobs are coming from the nursery, help is on the way when Rockabye Baby releases its latest album of rock songs turned into gentle instrumentals on February 9.

Lullaby Renditions of Journey features 12 songs from the classic group that has sold over 75 million albums worldwide. Thanks to the sweet and tender sounds of glockenspiel, vibraphone, Mellotron, harps and bells, tunes from the group with 18 Top 40 singles and six Top 10 hits extend "Open Arms" to infants. It¹s not "Only the Young" who enjoy Rockabye Baby albums. Parents who "Faithfully" follow the music of Journey will savor this album as it helps them to share the songs of their favorite band with the next generation. Moms and Dads who are "Stone In Love" with their little cradle rockers will also love lullabies that help ease their babies to sleep at naptime or bedtime with timeless tunes like "Don’t Stop Believin" the top selling catalog track on iTunes.

Rockabye Baby has fostered an ongoing revolution in children’s music by creating albums adults enjoy as much as children. Rockabye Baby’s CDs have become the must-have baby shower gift, while rocker parents and grandparents such as Sheryl Crow, Kirk Hammet of Metallica and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith have sung their praises.

The rock lullaby line has been heralded in the media and won top parenting product awards with its albums of songs by The Beatles, Queen, Bob Marley, U2, Led Zeppelin, Coldplay, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Green Day, The Ramones, Metallica, Radiohead, AC/DC, The Cure, and many more.

The label’s most recent release, Lullaby Renditions of Guns N’ Roses was named one of the 10 Best Books and CD Gifts for Kids in Entertainment Weekly¹s recent 2009 holiday gift guide, and the Aerosmith lullaby CD issued last September included liner notes by the band’s lead singer Steven Tyler.

The Rockabye Baby blog is updated daily with info about the coolest products and music for babies, coloring pages, rock star facts, recipes and much more to serve as a vital resource for parents. Fans of the albums can vote for the artists whose music they want to hear in future releases.

Find more information, song samples, the Rockabye Baby! blog and more at www.rockabyebabymusic.com.

What we thought:

Once again, the boys were quite anxious to try the new CD that we received. They both wanted to know the names of the songs as they played. They were also quite curious to see what would come next on the track list. NHL took the CD cover and read off as each song played. Like with the other Rockabye Baby! music that we have, it was nice to use not only when the boys go to sleep, but also for quiet play time.

As I listened to the CD, memories came to me from hearing these songs during my lifetime. It was nice listening to my boys react to the songs. NHL would ask me questions about them. Thanks to the Rockabye Baby! lullaby renditions of Journey, NHL has asked to hear the original Journey songs and we have done this so he can see the difference. My favorite songs on the CD are Open Arms, Don’t Stop Believin’, and Any Way You Want It. The songs on this CD are calming, soothing and perfect for background music when reading, having quiet play or trying to soothe a child to sleep.

I know that the next baby shower I go to, part of the gift will be a Rockabye Baby! CD with the songs of the parents favorite artist. With the wide variety now available, there will likely be several to pick from.

Disclosure:  I received the Lullaby Renditions of Journey CD complimentary of Rockabye Baby! in order to facilitate this review. No other compensations was given. The opinions expressed in the review are my own feelings about the product that my family tried.

Barefoot Books for Earth Day and beyond

Blogging has allowed me to "meet" so many wonderful people. Several years ago, I found Susan’s original blog and we became friends. The two of us would write comments on each others posts, we would e-mail each other and even chat on Twitter. Our oldest boys are both the same age, so we help each other virtually as we sent our boys off to kindergarten in September 2009. I also recall Susan mentioning more than once that she wanted to take a step into the business world. Recently, Susan made this dream a reality with her Barefoot Books Marketplace.

I first heard about Barefoot Books through Susan when she started to do her research. The books looked fabulous. As a teacher ,I am a book addict. I dare say I have a collection of picture books that I started when I was in college, even before I did my student teacher. My Children’s Literature course made me really appreciate the talents of various authors and the gifts that the illustrators add to their books.

Susan asked me if I would like to see and review a Barefoot Book gift set. I immediately said yes because it is always wonderful to help out a fellow mom. Just before Passover, we received a Barefoot Books box. The boys immediately wanted to see what was inside. Here is what we found:

Our Barefoot Books package

We received the Barebook Books for Baby Gift set. Here is more about it:

A perfect ‘welcome home’ for a new baby

Welcome a new baby into the world with a hardcover edition of Baby’s First Book, featuring Clare Beaton’s exquisite hand-sewn collages. Paired with a cuddly White Bunny Rabbit puppet, this gift set makes the perfect present and is presented in an eco-friendly, reusable green shopper tote with a gift tag to personalize.

Inside the book:

Teddy Bear Picnic - inside the book

My thoughts:

As someone that often needs to give baby gifts and other items to young children, I appreciate that Barefoot Books has gift sets like the one that we received. You could tell that a lot of thought went into the items that were included. The tag alone made it such a personal gift. The boys immediately claimed the rabbit puppet as theirs. Of course, we also read the book together. Each page was filled with the illustrations by Clare Beaton that allowed for a lot of discussion. The boys were able to repeat the nursery rhymes with me, tell me what the clothing was depicted, make up a story about the bears (seen above), or repeat the animal noises. There was a wealth of things that we could add to this book, especially with my two year old.

I must admit that I was partial to something with Baby’s First Book. I adored Clare Beaton’s illustrations. Not only did the author do them herself, they were actually hand-sewn. As a teacher, it looks like a felt board story was done with extra detail on each and every page. I could actually see framing some of the pages from this book in a nursery for a child. Yes, they really were that gorgeous. Beaton is a very talented artist.

When I looked over the catalog from Barefoot Books I realized something else. I had read several other Barefoot Books. Just a few weeks ago NHL took The Beeman by Laurie Krebs out of the library. We all loved the details about the world of bees and beekeeping, along with the amazing illustrations by Valeria Cis. There were other books that I also recognized.

Giveaway just in time for Earth Day:

How would you like a chance to win the Whole World Gift Set from Susan and Barefoot Books?

Whole World Gift Set - Barefoot Books

The set seen above is being given away on Susan’s Barefoot Books blog to celebrate Earth Month. Head on over to see more details about the gift set and to enter the giveaway.

Have you ever received or given Barefoot Books? If not please head on over to check them out at Susan’s Marketplace.

TheAngelForever

Disclosure: I received the Barefoot Books set complimentary of Susan to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed are 100% mine about the product. No other compensation was received. I have linked to Susan’s marketplace to assist a fellow mother in her new business.

Rockabye Baby! the new baby rock

When my oldest son moved into his room in our new house, he had some trouble falling asleep. After many sleepless nights of having a little one bunking with us, we were desperate. We decided to play music on a CD player to lull him to sleep. NHL is now six years old and still likes to fall asleep to music when at home. We have searched near and far for music that we all can work with. For the longest time, we only had one CD and it was used every night. Let’s be honest, there are only so many days in a row that an adult can handle listening to The Wiggles sing your child to sleep on a baby monitor.

Recently, I was contacted by Rockabye Baby! to review some of their CD lullaby renditions with family. This was not the first time I had heard of their music. One of their CDs was on the list of items to get for my new nephew when he is born in February. Of course, this was to keep not only him, but my brother happy as he rocks his son to sleep.

About Rockabye Baby!

From their website:

Rockabye Baby! is staffed by music lovers from all corners of the world. Headquartered in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Silver Lake, the label was born of the need to make children’s music cool–not only for babies but for their parents too. We turned to our record collections for inspiration: punk, metal, classic rock. The resulting albums are revolutionary yet reverential. In other words, the perfect gift for a newborn, new parents, or yourself.

Part of the CMH Label Group, a thirty-year-old independent bluegrass and roots-music stronghold that houses a variety of musical styles under its umbrella, including metal, rap, punk, and string quartet tributes, Rockabye Baby! is the latest addition to a diverse musical family. Says label Vice President Lisa Roth, "First and foremost, we’re fans, so we take care to make every album musically interesting enough to satisfy adult listeners. Believe me, making an album that’s gentle enough for sleeping babies but won’t bore Mom and Dad is trickier than it sounds." Producer/arrangers would agree! The job’s not easy, but it’s immensely gratifying to hear from pleased parents that Rockabye Baby! is now a treasured piece of their family history.

If you have never heard of Rockabye Baby! music you are missing out. They have taken classic music from different types of artists and made them into music perfect to lull your child to sleep. Some of the artists now available:

  • Guns n’ Roses, Metallica, AC/DC, Queen, Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin, U2, Aerosmith, Nirvana, Green Day, Pink Floyd, Tool, The Ramones, Coldplay, Radiohead, The Cure, The Rolling Stones, The Pixies, Nine Inch Nails, The Beach Boys, No Doubt, The Eagles, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Beatles, Bjork  and others

When you go to the Rockabye Baby! online store, you are able to listen songs from each of the albums to help make your decision. It really is not easy since they all are catchy and nice to listen to. While there, be sure to vote for who you would like to see as the next Rockabye Baby! CD. The list includes: Bob Dylan, Bon Jovi, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Stevie Wonder and Slayer.

In addition to the music, Rockabye Baby! also have limited edition Long Sleeve onesies. You can also receive up to 20% off your orders for a Holiday offer good until December 31. For more details click here.

Our thoughts:

We were sent a complimentary copy of the newest Rockabye Baby! – lullyby renditions of Guns n’ Roses along with lullby renditions of Aerosmith.

Rockabye Baby!

When the CDs arrived, I was extremely excited to test them out. Of course, I could not wait until bedtime. I decided to open up the Aerosmith one first. The first thing I noticed was the playful Aerosmith cover art on the CD case and inside. There were also teddy bears paper dolls that were decked out in items from Aerosmith. One of the extremely nice touches was a fabulous note from Steven Tyler (this CD was released in 2009). He wrote that he liked how Rockabye Baby! not only did a cover of Aerosmith’s songs, but took a unique approach to it. He also mentioned that he will be playing these for his grandson.

The boys had heard me playing the Rockabye Baby! music on the computer when I was debating my second CD to receive. As soon as I put the music on the boys looked up. NHL (6) wanted to know what it was. I told him the names of the songs and he was intrigued. Meanwhile, JSL 2, danced around quietly to the music that featured mellotrons, vibraphones and bells. Some of the songs are easier to recognize than others. This CD included the following Aerosmith hits:

  • I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, Dude (Looks Like a Lady), Dream On, Walk This Way, Cryin’, Mama Kin, Rag Doll, Last Child, Same Old Song and Dance, Sweet Emotion, Amazing and Angel

At dinner the same night, I popped in the Guns n’ Roses Rockabye Baby! CD. I wanted my husband to listen and see what the boys’ reaction would be. The minute Welcome to the Jungle came on my son made the following statement: "Mom, can I please listen to that when I fall asleep tonight?" Sure enough, when it was time to tuck him in we started his usual music. He immediately protested and asked for the Guns n’ Roses, so we went to put it on. This CD included the following songs:

  • Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child O’ Mine, Paradise City, Live and Let Die, November Rain, You Could Be Mine, Mr. Brownstone, Estranged, Yesterdays, Don’t Cry, Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door and Patience

NHL fell asleep in record time that night. The best part was both of the boys asked to listen to the music while playing with trains in their room. NHL has also asked to hear the real renditions of the songs from Aerosmith and Guns n’ Roses. This will be nice to share with him and expand his musical appreciation.

We are definitely going to purchase one of these CDs for my new nephew and add more to our collection of night time music.  I just need to touch base with my family  to see which one they would like since there are so many groups that I know my brother loves. If you need a baby shower gift, or unique item for a music lover, I highly recommend Rockabye Baby CDs.
