Iced Over Mess

I interrupt regularly scheduled blog posts to announce that Winter has NOT left the building yet. The groundhog clearly did not specify where Spring would be coming early.

*sigh*

Over the weekend Mother Nature had some fun with those of us living in the north. First, she gave us warmer temperatures. 50 degrees in early March is not too shabby. Snow mountains that were here a week ago looked more like oversized ant hills on lawns. Sunday we watched as the rain came down very steady at times. Then, as the day moved on, the temperatures started to bottom out. Before we knew it, we were well below freezing and the rain turned to ice.

It is hard to concentrate on anything, including sleep, when ice is pelting your house. This morning schools in the entire area went from 2 hour delays to closed. Even our front door was glazed with ice. At first it was stuck shut. Imagine using that as your excuse not to get into work.

Ice Ice Baby

The trees are a mess thanks to the rain freezing on them. This is a little one on the side out front:

Covered in Ice

Ice is heavy and the tree in our yard is hanging down. If it large limbs fall I fear we will not have power, and may need repairs to the house itself.

Trees in Trouble

Every little noise outside is going to keep me on edge. Excuse me while I go run for a blanket to hide under.

Snowpacalypse – February 2011

We knew it was not going to be good when the meteorologists in the area refused to disclose information about Wednesday’s weather. They finally started to talk late Monday night. That should have been our first sign to RUN to Florida.

Instead, when I started to hear about the snow fall totals for the area, I started to laugh. And by laugh, I mean hysterical slap stick style laughing. Horrified laughter started as the panic set in.

Why you ask? Well, they are telling us to expect 18-30 inches of snow!

No schools in our immediate area delayed or canceled school. TechyDad took NHL to school this morning, and I brought JSL to nursery school. When I got back home, you could not tell that I had done anything this morning.

This is the pre-Snowpacalype photos of the front and back of the house.

Front before the big storm

Back before the big storm

What you can not see here are the snow piles in the front by the street, and on the side of the house.

Hmmm. . . anyone have a good deal on a snow blower?

No, it won’t help us now. I do think that if we get one it would stop all of the future snow from coming. Well, a girl can dream at least. Now off to figure out if I should go and get the boys from school now instead of later. Oy!

Winter Woes

That’s it. . . I have had enough of this winter weather. I knew December was too mild and would come back to haunt us later on.

Welcome January!

January has been cruel with lots of snow, ice, and temperatures not even coming close to 32 in weeks. Tonight we are supposed to dip down to –14. Just thinking about it makes me shiver. I have not left the house this weekend and am not planning on it right now.

I keep hearing reports from TechyDad about the ice dams on our roof and I want to cry. No matter what we do they keep forming on the one side of the house. I have a feeling the insulation under the now replaced section of the roof is shot. We will have to address the obvious problem with our contractor this spring.

So this is my message to Mother Nature:

Bye-Bye Winter

If you need to vent, please use the comments below. I know how it can sometimes help.

Disney Dreaming of No Snow

Right now I wish I was seeing this:

Dreaming of Disney

Instead of the magic of Disney World, the view out my front door looks something like this:

A call from Mickey

Yes, both boys have no school and are trapped stuck home with me today. Lots of things that need to get done, but not likely to happen. Safe travels to everyone out in this snowy and especially icy weather that is all over the place today.

If you could pick a place to be right this very moment, where would it be?

I am off to hide under the covers and wish I was in Florida with Mickey Mouse and friends.

Heat is a Wonderful Thing

This morning, when I woke up and got out of bed I was freezing. Nothing too alarming really, we keep the house at 63 degrees, and we just got 13 inches of snow yesterday. Here you can see what it looked like before it stopped:

It’s not rocket science, we know it’s cold. When I got NHL up, he went to the couch and complained he was freezing. This is where a red alert should have happened. NHL is never cold unless he is sick, and (*KNOCK ON WOOD*) he is not sick yet. I went over to the thermostat and clicked it up two degrees and walked away.

More SnowDid you notice I forgot to do something?

About an hour later I was shivering with JSL in my room. He just woke up and I had to take his temperature. I went to check the heat since the radiators were ice cold.

55 degrees! Uh, Houston we have a problem! I called TechyDad in a panic. I went downstairs and did not see the pilot light on. He talked to his boss, got permission to come home and help me.

After several attempts to keep the pilot lit, it failed horribly. TechyDad went to Home Depot to pick up a thermal coupler. He had replaced this a little over a year ago, so we tried that. It seemed to work at first, but just before heading back to work he went down to check. Nada was lit again. No heat coming out. *sigh*

TechyDad checking things outAt this point, my father came to my rescue and called a Heating/Plumbing place to call me back. They heard we were at 55 degrees with a sick kid and came in less than two hours. To make a long story short – we have heat! The gentleman here  also realized the idiots that put in our system (contractor hired them – not us) when we moved in had something that was making us waste money. He fixed that and we handed over a check with heat flowing out of our radiators.

Immediately afterward, I called S. C. BASS Plumbing to thank them for coming so quickly. Then I made an appointment to have our heating system cleaned.

So excuse me now – I am off to enjoy something I took for granted while taking care of my sick little guy.
