Collection Time

Growing up, we would usually take at least one family vacation a year. It would be to Disney World, Ocean City Maryland, Virginia, or various other places along the east coast. Along the way, my brother and I started to collect buttons/pins from the places that we would go to. This collection continued as I would get pins from locations I visited when I was in college and even beyond.

Over the summer, the boys and I found my giant box of goodies from growing up.

The boys were mesmerized with everything inside. They loved seeing all of the ones from different Disney attractions and locations. Some of these sadly are long gone. NHL spent quite a lot of time reading all of them and asking me questions about the different pins and when I received them.

Old School Buttons

My question to you this week is inspired by my old collection:

What items have you and/or your children decided to collect and why?

Tuesday Tales – Disney Drawing Books

Do your children like to draw? My eight year old son, NHL, has caught the drawing bug. I still remember growing up and constantly drawing with the Ed Emberley books. I loved, loved, loved them and would spend hours making the critters and characters in the books come alive. I think these books may have sparked my desire to continue with art classes when in high school. To me, they were great to be creative and relax a bit from the high level science and math courses that I took.

Book bought in February 2010

During our February 2010 trip to Walt Disney World, NHL was fascinated with the drawings and animation area at Hollywood Studios. While visiting one of the gift shops, he begged TechyDad and I to allow him to purchase something. It was a giant “How to Draw” book of Disney characters. It looked like a bit much for him, but certainly something he would grow into. As a perk, it was not a plastic toy or new stuffed animal. We bought the book seen above. We pulled the Learn to Draw Disney: Celebrated Characters Collection book out recently and NHL adored it. He kept trying new characters and making up stories to go along with his drawings.

Time to draw Phineas and Ferb charactersRecently, a Scholastic book order came home and something snagged my attention. There was Learn to Draw Disney Phineas and Ferb Book that I knew NHL would love. This would combine his love for Perry, Doofenshmirtz, and other characters from the show with drawing. I ordered it to put away for Chanukah. TechyDad and I were right, NHL was in love with his new drawing book.

We were impressed with the easy to follow instructions in the book. The new Phineas and Ferb book is actually made by the same Walter Foster publishing company. Inside the book there is a table of contents with all of the characters that you can learn to draw yourself. NHL was excited to see not only Phineas, Ferb, Perry, but also Baljeet, Buford, Jeremy, and many others.

Here is a sneak peek inside the book at drawing Agent P and Dr. Doofenshmirtz:

Drawing Agent P and Dr. Doofenshmirtz

During one of the days of vacation, we pulled out the drawing books and other items to spending some time inside the warm house. NHL immediately picked a character to draw. Much to my surprise, he picked Buford and got started.

First Drawing

It was fun to watch NHL concentrate and smile when he was finished and had a favorite Phineas and Ferb character drawn on his own paper. Yes, I do believe many hours of drawing fun will continue with this book, and likely more from Walter Foster in our future.

Do you have any drawing books that your family loves? I would love to know. I would also like to hear about what have you read recently? Please be sure to link up to your Tuesday Tales and/or leave a comment below. Include something you read on your own, with a child or someone else. Tuesday Tales are all about spreading the love for books.

Thankful for Ohana

Thanksgiving and a weekend filled with family for my cousin’s Aufruf has me thinking. TechyDad and I are very lucky to have such wonderful people in our lives. Yes, our Ohana has always been there for all of us over the years.

In honor of our family, I want to share a special moment. When we went to Disney World in March, I really wanted to capture memories of the boys. JSL was finally getting into going to see the characters, but he was still a bit shy. Here are the boys at the meet and greet with Lilo and Stitch at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

It is amazing to see how much they grew and started to love the characters. JSL went from crying and clawing at them, to giving them hugs when he was leaving their side. Yes, this is what memories are made of thanks to Disney loving Ohana.

Personalized Princess Time at Disney

Growing up, people would always ask my parents why we would go time after time to Walt Disney World. I never really understood why people would ask these questions. The reason: it was a place where our entire family could enjoy our time together. We were able to leave the real world behind, be carefree, and see/experience something new no matter how familiar we were with the parks.

 March 2011

As an adult, I get it. I now understand the magic of a Disney vacation on a different level. Before we go, I have everything planned. We have our entertainment built in, our resort has many options to offer, and even meals are booked and with the meal plan only tips need to be paid. By the time we arrive in Orlando, we have paid for everything except some souvenirs and ready to enjoy our time there.

Back in March, when we were planning some dining reservations I told TechyDad that I had a request. In all of my visits to Walt Disney World, I had never eaten with the princesses. Yes, this mother of two boys wanted to see Belle, Ariel, Arora, and other important ladies in Disney history. TechyDad was not entirely sure that it was the best thing to do with two boys, but I insisted. NHL and JSL were young enough to appreciate the experience without complaints about mostly girls in their princess gear being there.

Princess Dining

We were able to snag some lunch reservations to Akershus Royal Banquet Hall in Epcot. We had a magical experience. We had our photo taken with Belle before we were seated. Then, each of the princesses came around to meet and greet every table. What impressed me the most was how the characters interacted with the boys. Check out how Ariel noticed something in the autograph book and talked about pirates.

A magical moment that we captured and can show back to the boys when they are older. Of course, we can also show JSL the goofy smile that he was sporting most of the trip when it was time for photos.

While we were waiting for our dessert, I pulled out the video camera and asked NHL what he thought of the experience. I figured it would be interesting to see what a seven year old boy, with no sisters, had to say about dining with Disney Princesses. This is what he had to say in the very distracted environment.

I do believe that we made the right choice going to this restaurant on our March vacation. I know it was a magical memory that will live with us for many years to come.

If you have any magical Disney moments to share, I would love to hear them. As always, if you have any questions about Disney – just ask away.

Last Official Day of Summer Vacation 2011

Today is the last day before the boys begin school again. Tomorrow, NHL is off for his first day of third grade. JSL goes to visit/meet his new teachers and then heads back on Wednesday.

I am looking forward to some me time without the boys with me all day, every day, 24/7 – BUT I will miss something. Summer is a special time. The boys were carefree this summer. There were lots of smiles, no stress, and worries were few and far between. There was no homework, we could read for the sake of enjoyment. No schedules for after school activities, Hebrew School, or even bedtime.

Back to School

So while I look forward to the future time to get work done and seeing my boys learn and grow at school, a selfish part of me will miss the carefree days of summer.

What will you miss about summer as almost all children head back to school? What is your favorite part about back to school?
