My homage to the Doof

Some of you may have seen the title of my post and had no clue what it means. Guess you do not recognize the crew below.

Some of our Phineas and Ferb items

This is my six year old son’s Phineas and Ferb shirt, along with the Phineas and Ferb soundtrack. Recently, NHL has really taken to Phineas and Ferb on the Disney Channel. The show has a lot of catchy tunes and even adults can laugh along with it.

The other day, a childhood friend left a message on Facebook to see if anyone would know what he was talking about. His wife thought it was pretty obscure and nobody would recognize it. The status message simply stated, "My name if Doof and you’ll do what I say!"

I vaguely recalled it, but said it outloud to TechyDad expecting a reply from him. Before I knew it, NHL said the following, "My name is Doof and you’ll do what I say. Woot! Woot!"  He kept on going singing the entire song that Dr. Doofenshmirtz sings from Phineas and Ferb.

While visiting my mother today, I had a weak parenting moment. I channeled my inner Dr. Doofenshmirtz and said the following to JSL:

Me: My name is Mama and you’ll do what I say. Woot! Woot!

Without missing a beat, the little guy replied back to me.

JSL: My name is JSL pup-pup you do whah I. Woot! Woot!

I immediately wanted to be able to share this with hubby since it had backfired, but in a really cute way. Here is the little guy doing it several more times with me.

The lesson learned is that this may have worked for Doof, but it does not work with 2 and 6 year old children!

Wiggly Waffle on Sprout

A few weeks ago, I got up early and went to stand at the box office to get tickets for a concert. No, it was not to see Billy Joel, Five For Fighting or Bon Jovi. These tickets were for a family event. Once again, we are going to see The Wiggles!!

We are huge fans of The Wiggles. We have been watching them for over five years now. We have not only been to two concerts, but last year we sat in the front row of the show.

P1060166

This year, we are taking the newest Wiggles addict in our family. JSL will finally be able to see The Wiggles live and he has no clue what to expect. He has only seen the show at Wiggles World in the Six Flags park near us.

Big Red Car driving time

Of course, NHL grew up watching The Wiggles on Playhouse Disney. Did you know that The Wiggles have a new television home in the United States?

Wiggles on Sprout

Not only are The Wiggles on Sprout, but they have a new show that is on weekday mornings from 6-9 on Sprout. Sadly, our cable company (Time Warner) does not provide us with Sprout. We have been asking for it for many years now, but still have not been able to get it. Of course, with The Wiggles move to Sprout I am once again starting my crusade to get this cable station added in our area. I not only went to WigglesPlease.com,  I am also planning to call my Time Warner Cable to make the request again.

Wiggly Waffle Time 6-9 M-F

When I was asked by Family Review Network to help to get the word out about The Wiggles moving to Sprout I jumped at the opportunity. We were also told about Sprout being on Facebook. If you are on Facebook head on over to check out the  Wigglemania Facebook Contest.

In addition to helping to get the word out about The Wiggles new television home, we were also sent a DVD to review. When the DVD arrived my little Wiggles fans were eager to check it out. We received The Wiggles Present: Dorothy The Dinosaur. As you can see, we are no strangers to Wiggles DVDs.

Checking out the new DVD

The Wiggles Presents: Dorothy the Dinosaur is different from other Wiggles DVDs that we own. This DVD takes us to Rosy Town where we meet up with Dorothy the Dinosaur. Dorothy begins by showing us her book that is filled with some of her wonderful memories. As she turns the pages of her memory book we are transported into her past. We get to sing and dance along with Dorothy, Wags the Dog, Henry the Octapus, Captain Feathersword and special guests that include Francis Awaritefe, Rachel Beck, Troy Cassar-Daley, Kathy Gothadjaka, David Hobson, Jane Kennedy, John Rowe, Leo Sayer and Don Spencer.

Some of The Wiggles Songs included on this DVD are:

  • Balla Balla Bambina
  • C’est Wags, C’est Bon
  • Come On Let’s Jump
  • I Look in the Mirror
  • I’m Dorothy the Dinosaur
  • I’m the Postman
  • Lettuce Sing (Fresh Fruit and Vegies)
  • Say Aah at the Doctors
  • Vegetable Soup

10 other songs are also included on the DVD along with the following Special Features:

  • The Wiggles Jukebox – The Band Sings and Plays Some of Their All-Time Best Songs
  • Join The Wiggles for Wash Your Hands – UNICEF’s official song for Global Handwashing Day
  • Two Bonus Episodes from Dorothy the Dinosaur’s TV Series
  • Photo Gallery

What our Wiggles fans thought:

NHL (6): He liked the songs that were included. He immediately got up and danced along with Dorothy. When the DVD was over he asked where Sam, Anthony, Murray and Jeff were. Being older he is used to the more traditional Wiggles DVDs where they are front and center in the production.

JSL (2): As a newer Wiggles addict fan, the little guy asked to watch it again when it was over. He loved dancing and singing along to several songs that he recognized. After watching it a few times he now sings along with everything and especially love the song featuring Leo Sayer who is also in the You Make Me Feel Like Dancing DVD that we already owned.

Parent View: We could appreciate the brave move to try something different. Putting the spotlight onto Dorothy and seeing her memories in song/dance was a nice change. As always, we love the educational push that all Wiggles DVDs have in them. There is a lot for children of all ages to learn from watching this DVD.

There is no doubt that our Wiggles DVD collection will continue to grow. Look for new Wiggles concert  photos coming in about a month when we take JSL to his first live Wiggles event with Sam, Anthony, Murray, Jeff, Captain Feathersword, The Wiggle Dancers, Dorothy, Henry and Wags.

If you have Sprout, know that we are extremely jealous of you and please be sure to tune in and watch Wiggly Waffle each weekday morning. For now the boys and I will continue to watch our Wiggles DVD collection and play on The Wiggles area on Sprout Online.

Nanny Fine all the time

Oy! Let me take you back to the early ’90’s for a few minutes. Say hello to Nanny Fine, Mr. Sheffield, Niles, C.C. Babcock, Margaret, Brighton, Grace, Sylvia, Val and Yetta. These were all of the friendly and quirky characters from the television show The Nanny. There was just something about Fran Drescher and the rest of the amazing actors on the show. Once you looked beyond her nasal voice, it was oddly captivating.

Thanks to Nick at Nite, I can once again watch The Nanny each night as I settle into bed. I love just sitting there, laughing (while sometimes knitting) and catching each of the fabulous punch lines. The timing on the jokes, often said by Daniel Davis as Niles the butler, still hold up today. As an adult I appreciate many of the items that likely went right over my head as a high school student. Now I enjoy how The Nanny makes me laugh, and melts the stresses of the day away.

So my question this week:

What television show from the past would you, or do you, love to watch? I suppose you can call it your guilty pleasure. It could be a cartoon (like Muppet Babies), drama (like Little House on the Prarie), or another comedy (like Mork & Mindy, The Nanny, Dinosaurs . . . . or countless others) or something else.

Now I will leave you with the fun theme song from The Nanny:

Sesame Street Favorites

I grew up watching Sesame Street. I remember when nobody else could see Snuffy, seeing Bob in concert, crying when Mr. Hooper passed away, and dancing and singing with fun songs. My boys are also Sesame Street fans. We have taken NHL to Sesame Place (not a major fan), gone to see Sesame Street Live 3 years in a row (love it) and own multiple Sesame Street DVDs.

All of the Sesame Street Gang

Last Friday we met my brother and niece at a museum on the way to their house for the long weekend. At the museum they had an extended Sesame Street area. All three of the kids loved seeing the friendly Sesame Street faces. It got me thinking, who is my favorite Sesame Street character? As a child of the late 1970’s and early 80’s, I grew up before Elmo, Rosita, Abby  and Zoe. Big Bird was a big star in my eyes since I had pet birds. Of course, there was a special place in my heart for the wild and crazy Super Grover. I will also admit that Baby Bear makes my skin crawl. It just bothers me that he talks like a baby. As an educator to promote something like this on a show seems so wrong.

History of Sesame Street characters

So in honor of children all over the world that have grown up with these amazing Jim Henson creations my question this week is:

Who is your favorite Sesame Street character and why? Is there one that you dislike for any reason?

Kids television that you love to hate

How many of you have at least  one kids television show that bothers you so much?

Perhaps you will not allow your children to watch it, you need to leave the room when they do, or it actually makes your skin crawl. Admit it, there must be at least one or more of the childrens shows that gets on your last nerve.

When we found out that we were expecing for the first time, we let our family and friends know that there were two shows that were not acceptable in our eyes. We never wanted anything with Barney, you know the big purple dinosaur, thanks to being forced to watch too many of his videos when I worked in an educational store. His song makes me shudder to this day. The other no-no was the Teletubbies. Once again, too much of them when working retail in college. As an education major, I also had trouble with a show that did not talk properly. Just ask me what my opinion of Baby Bear on Sesame Street is, you will get quite an earful.

Back when NHL was really little I did not understand The Wiggles. Of course, he loved them. The singing and dancing kept his attention. It was wonderful when I needed to do something quickly. I could count on The Wiggles, not to babysit my child, but to keep him moving and singing. Since that time we have been to two Wiggles concerts and now JSL is becoming a huge Wiggles fan. He request their songs by demanding "Car Car" or "Quack Quack" frequently.

As NHL has grown his taste in programing change from week to week. Thank goodness we have been able to make him avoid Thomas. For some reason the slow pace of the show and voices just bother me. One that we have not been able to avoid recently is Dora the Explorer. NHL is intrigued by her teaching Spanish and even the little guy likes to dance to the music. On the rare occasision that Dora or Diego are on, I tend to tune them out.

The other night, JSL received a Diego giant pillow from Nana and Papa. He loved it and called it "Go-Go" thanks to the Diego theme song. Much to my delight, I captured the following video of JSL with Go-Go the other night. Please watch and see how much he "loves" Diego.

When I saw him doing this I kept thinking, wow I believe there are other characters that could use a nice dose of this!
