The horrible Mr. Thirsty!!!

This afternoon we had an appointment to bring Thing 1 and Thing 2 to the dentist. JL brought NHL and I brought JSL. Thing 1 needed his 6 month cleaning and Thing 2 had to have his gums rechecked per the dentists request when he was 5-6 weeks old.

NHL was apparently much better this time with the cleaning. She was able to get all of the teeth cleaned with the polish brush, but he would not allow her to floss. We didn’t push the issue. The item that really freaked the kid . . . the dreaded MR THIRSTY!

I kid you not, he was petrified of it. I casually mentioned to the hygienist that he has some sensory issues and loud noises like vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers, electric hair clippers, and apparently Mr. Thirsty freak him out. She noted this on his chart. After the cleaning was finished Dr. N came in and she was so great. She was calm and talked NHL through everything. He listened to her and she was able to use the instrument to get the little bit of tarter (or “cookie bugs” as my dentist referred to them when I was little) off his bottom teeth. She said they looked fine and still no cavities.

Then it was time for JSL. He was so good. He opened his mouth nicely and she was quickly able to see what Dr. J wanted us to come back to check on. The cysts are still there and quite large, but she isn’t worried. She said they could technically stay until he cuts teeth, but that usually doesn’t happen. She also felt along his gum lines and did not feel any tooth buds yet. She said the excess saliva and constant bib chewing could be from things shifting and pressure bothering him. She said most kids cut tooth #1 at 7 months. I told her that NHL had his first at about 5 months and was like this at the same age as JSL. She said when I bring NHL in next time she’ll take a peak at JSL again to see how things are going.

So our next dentist appointment is during February break and I will have to take both of the boys myself (mid day so JL won’t be coming with us). Mind you it will likely be in the snow to make things even more interesting. Oh well, better to do it at that time then to have to take NHL from school.

OK – now I’m really going to bed!

Back from Dentist

We are back from the pediatric dentist. JSL is not getting a molar. Dr. Jason said the names for what JSL has are Keratin Cysts, Bohn’s Nodules (common name), Epstein’s Pearls, or Gingival Cysts. Here’s a website about some of them:

As you’ll see they look like teeth (and can feel like them). He also told me that he is teething, just starting, not cutting anything yet. He suspects that he will have a tooth in the next 2-3 months like his big brother. I was very impressed with this dentist. We go back in August with NHL for a quick check. And he also confirmed that JSL’s tongue tie is nothing to worry about.

My poor baby

Just a quick note to update what’s going on with JSL. The poor baby was up 12-14 hours yesterday. He would nap for 15-20 minutes only to wake up screaming. The Tylenol the doctor told us to give him did nothing. When JL got home he looked into JSL’s mouth and was shocked with how much it was coming out. He was a mess all day. He was choking on saliva (5 week olds don’t know to drool it out), had nasty “teething” diapers, and was shoving his fist into his mouth or punch the outside of his cheek with the same fist. JL went out to get some teething toys at the grocery store late last night. He nursed some at about 10 and eventually fell asleep. He fussed when we moved him into bed, but went lost the battle. At 4:40 he woke up for milk and a diaper change. Then went back to sleep eventually until 8:30. He’s asleep again now in the Papasan after nursing some. He’s so miserable he keeps waking to cry and then going back to sleep.

I called the pediatric dentist this morning and we’re going in at 1:00 to see another dentist in their practice. I really didn’t care who I saw so long as we got in quickly. So we shall see what happens. I certainly never thought I would be taking my 5 week old to the dentist.

Teething already?!?!

Today JSL has been a bear. He wants to be held constantly. I think the culprit is something that shocks the heck out of me. He’s cutting a tooth. I kid you not! He’s just 5 weeks old today and cutting a freaking tooth! Heck it isn’t even a usual one, it’s an upper back one. I don’t know if I should call the doctor. I can see and feel white points coming through. The poor baby. He’s been clingy, wanting to eat, having nasty diapers (very much like NHL did when teething), gumming his hand and wants to hug/pet something. Since I had to go do something and put him down for a minute I put him in the Papasan chair and gave him his Tag Blanket to pet that Nancy made. Here’s a photo of the little guy sleeping:

Now I have to figure out to or not to call the doctor. They will think I am insane about the tooth, but I’ve seen one of the points since he was born – and now there are four. Plus when I scratched at it it doesn’t come off, and I felt it was more sharp and it started to bleed a little. *sigh* I am so afraid of what this means. . . I’ve been crying right along with him since he’s so miserable.

Update: called the doctor and waiting for a return call. JSL finally fell asleep mid scream after hysteric for the last 5-6 hours almost non-stop.

On that note he’s calm and I am off to attempt to eat lunch and finish the laundry.
