Lots and Lots of Snow

The winter started off kind of slow here in the snow department. Over the last three weeks, Mother Nature is laughing down at a lot of us. Tuesday night into Wednesday, we got at least 13” of fresh snow.

While the snow looks very pretty, it can be tough to deal with. It melts and creates ice, which is beyond dangerous to drive on. Roofs may form ice damns that leak back into homes. If there is too much snow, you can have trouble locating a place to shovel more of it.

Some Snowy Fun

On the flip side, playing in the snow is lots of fun. Listening to your children laugh while they make snow angels, go on sleigh rides, and chase each other is priceless.

So my question to you this week is:

What is your favorite and least favorite part about snow? If you are not in a snowy area, I hate you… –er I mean what is the first thing you would like to do in snow?

Heat is a Wonderful Thing

This morning, when I woke up and got out of bed I was freezing. Nothing too alarming really, we keep the house at 63 degrees, and we just got 13 inches of snow yesterday. Here you can see what it looked like before it stopped:

It’s not rocket science, we know it’s cold. When I got NHL up, he went to the couch and complained he was freezing. This is where a red alert should have happened. NHL is never cold unless he is sick, and (*KNOCK ON WOOD*) he is not sick yet. I went over to the thermostat and clicked it up two degrees and walked away.

More SnowDid you notice I forgot to do something?

About an hour later I was shivering with JSL in my room. He just woke up and I had to take his temperature. I went to check the heat since the radiators were ice cold.

55 degrees! Uh, Houston we have a problem! I called TechyDad in a panic. I went downstairs and did not see the pilot light on. He talked to his boss, got permission to come home and help me.

After several attempts to keep the pilot lit, it failed horribly. TechyDad went to Home Depot to pick up a thermal coupler. He had replaced this a little over a year ago, so we tried that. It seemed to work at first, but just before heading back to work he went down to check. Nada was lit again. No heat coming out. *sigh*

TechyDad checking things outAt this point, my father came to my rescue and called a Heating/Plumbing place to call me back. They heard we were at 55 degrees with a sick kid and came in less than two hours. To make a long story short – we have heat! The gentleman here  also realized the idiots that put in our system (contractor hired them – not us) when we moved in had something that was making us waste money. He fixed that and we handed over a check with heat flowing out of our radiators.

Immediately afterward, I called S. C. BASS Plumbing to thank them for coming so quickly. Then I made an appointment to have our heating system cleaned.

So excuse me now – I am off to enjoy something I took for granted while taking care of my sick little guy.

A Big Brother Sleigh Ride

Yesterday, I wrote the boys a letter for Dear Kid Saturday. In it, I mentioned we played outside in the yard to enjoy the snow. For the life of me, I do not know why we have never done this before. Some of it may have been the old fence pieces, and the tree stump that was finally removed. Whatever it was, I am so glad we did it. Here is another video of NHL and JSL having a blast:

Now I think TechyDad and I need to really contemplate getting rid of the mulberry tree in the back. If that was gone, the boys could use the yard more and not have to worry about berries all over everything during a good portion of the warmer months.

Ah, the joys of owning a home.

A Snow Filled Apology

Dear NHL and JSL,

This morning we woke up to more snow. Last time it snowed, it was too cold to stay outside and everyone was pretty sick afterward. Today was the perfect chance to head out and get some playing in.

Most of the snow on the sidewalk out front was already gone, so we had to think about a place to use the sled. Daddy suggested we try the back yard. This is where my apology comes in. For some reason we have NEVER gone to play in the snow back there.

Now, I think we all know that this was a huge mistake. Both of you had an amazing time. You made a sled track, made snow castles, snow cakes, and even tried to make angels. It was so much fun watching you romp, play, laugh, and enjoy the time together.

I brought my camera outside to capture some of the memories. For now I am going to show you one video I took. This video is of NHL being chased by Daddy pulling around JSL. The three of you had a blast romping in the snow:

Thank you both for the magical snow memories. It made all of the shoveling worth the effort to see both of you so happy.

Love,

Mommy
