Taking Payments With Your Smartphone and Square

#VZWBuzz Disclosure

Have you ever been at an event where you want to buy something, but you have no cash? This often happens to me. On the flip side, I have also been the business owner that did not have an easy way to take credit card payments.

Taking Payments With Your Smart Phone

For a while, I used PayPal to invoice people, but that can be time consuming and sometimes it takes a while to process. As I started going to live events with Jamberry products, I needed something quicker and easier to process credit card sales. While at Puzzles Bakery, I was reminded of the Square Reader. At this amazing business, they use iPads with the Square Stand as their cash register and Square for processing credit payments. When we had lunch there, I used my card, signed with my finger on their tablet, and received an email receipt moments later.

Square Used at Puzzles Bakery and Cafe

I knew that I needed to get a Square card reader to use for my business. I went online and signed up for an account. It was quick and easy. Once I requested the free reader, I went back to the website to personalize my account. From here, I  grabbed my Android device to install the Square Register app.

While I did not have my card reader right away, I was still able to set things up. The interactive nature of the Square website and app are impressive. I was able to put items into my store for quick and easy check out. In addition to this, I could set up the look and feel of receipts that customers would receive.Yes, I could even have specific designs noted in my sales for Autism related events. Even without the reader, you can take credit card payments. There is just a slightly larger percentage taken out for this.

Setting Up the Square App

Once my Square reader arrived, it was time to test it out with a credit card. It was easy to use thanks to a great tutorial that prompts you with what to do next. (1) Put in the amount of the transaction. (2) Confirm the amount and press charge. (3) Select credit card and enter the card number or swipe it through the reader. (4) Have the customer sign on your smartphone.

After signing, you press continue and it will let you know if the charge has been successful. A short time after this, the customer will a receipt via email.

Receipt from Square Purchase

So far my experience has been great with the Square and I hope to report back again after more use. I love how portable it is so I can take it to vendor event, home parties, or business meetings. The only stumbling block I had was my OtterBox made it a bit more tricky to push the Square reader into my phone

Have you every used a Square reader to make a purchase or take a payment? I would love to know how it helped your shopping experience.

Sharing More with Video Slides on the Go

#VZWBuzz Disclosure

Do you ever have a large number of photos that you really want to share all at once? You know, from a kid’s play, trip to Walt Disney World, or just capturing special moments with your family. Sure, you could toss them all onto Instagram or your Facebook page for everyone to see one at a time. Doing this would take a lot of time, annoy some people, and be kind of boring. Video slides are a fun and different way to share a lot of items in a shorter amount of time.

Creating Video Slides on the Go

A lot of my friends use Flipagram and I have tried it. The reason I did not like that app is simple. I don’t want the name of the app watermarked on my slide show. I went searching and found something that I had used in the past that had a lot of new and interesting features. PhotoGrid has grown up and changed a lot since I had used it. You can now make collages (grid), scrapbook style images, edit photos, create video slides, tell stories with the filmstrip option, and more.

PhotoGrid App Options

While I still want to try more of the new options, I have been enjoying the ease of using the PhotoGrid app for Video Slides. When you select Video Slides, you will automatically be taken to the camera photos on your smartphone. You may select up to 50 items from that folder and others on your device using the drop down in the top left corner. Once you have selected the photos that you want to include, click the Next button in the lower right corner. You will be able to shuffle photos that were selected into the order you prefer. In addition to this, if you tap on an individual image you will be able to edit or delete them. The editing will allow you to crop, use filters, retouch, add background/text/stickers/borders, and draw on the images. This means that you may not need to use multiple apps to finish one project thanks to PhotoGrid.

Creating video slides in PhotoGrid app

When finished arranging and editing slide photos, click on the Preview button at the top right. From this area, you will be able to edit the video itself. You can add music, adjust the legth of the video, change the way the slides transition, put a background or border in, and have your signature at the end of your creation. You can spend as much or little time as you want to make it just the way you want. I love that even leaving it the way it comes, the piece looks nice and perfect for sharing on Instagram and other places.

Editing VideoSlide on PhotoGrid App

When you are satisfied with the way the video preview looks, you may save the completed Video Slide to your phone and/or share it with the push of a button. Here is an example of one that I made from our visit to Puzzles Bakery & Café and the Autism Society of the Greater Capital Region. As you may have guessed, I am getting ready to spread and share information for autism awareness and acceptance.

Working on two posts at one time. Love that my phone helps me. #VZWBuzz

Tuesday Tales: Technology to Assist Young Readers

#VZWBuzz Disclosure

Reading for pleasure and reading at school can be two very different beasts. As a certified reading teacher, I adore watching young children begin to decode words and tackle their first books. Seeing their faces light up at this accomplishment is amazing. As kids continue to grow academically, they hit other literacy benchmarks within elementary school. This summer, my youngest son started to read chapter books without me. Now you never find him without his nose in a book when we are on the go.

Using Audiobooks with Middle School Students

If you think that this is where it stops, you are not correct. When kids enter middle school, the world changes for them as they begin to dive further into literature. Now it is not simply about reading a story and summarizing it. They begin to analyze more and more about the characters, plots, and connections to real world people, places, and things.

When I was teaching sixth grade Language Arts, I decided to try something different with my class while reading Ella Enchanted. I brought the audio discs of the book to allow my classes to listen and read along. What I witnessed was eye opening. Students that may have struggled reading independently were doing fantastic. They were able to actively engage more in class discussions, they absorbed more of the fine details of the story, and they appeared to really enjoy the experience as a whole.

Fast Forward to my oldest son starting middle school this fall. It was something we were quite worried about since he is autistic, but it seemed to be just what he needed. When he read his first novel, I listened to the audiobook on my smartphone. I knew that the change in Language Arts would be big and I may need to step in and assist him with abstract concepts. The audiobook was a great for me to multitask. Thanks to listening to the book, I was able to discuss topics with him. When he had homework, I was able to listen to his ideas to make sure he understood what the question was really asking. Often times, autistic individuals are very literal and this can make learning to analyze literature more of a challenge.

When NHL started his second novel at the beginning of third marking period, I wanted to try another approach. I thought back to when I was teaching in my own classroom and what I experienced with my students. I immediately went to my OverDrive media app, signed into my local library and looked for the MP3 Audiobook I needed. Once I found it and saw that it was available, I checked the book out and it downloaded onto my smartphone.

When NHL came home with his first reading assignment, I was ready. We sat down together in a quiet location. I used my BOSE SoundLink Mini speakers so we could both listen clearly together. I handed NHL his copy of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan and clicked on the app to listen to the first chapter. So far this approach seems to be helping my son. He is a lot more confident about the experience and is able to delve more into the abstract content within the homework questions. It is still a challenge at times because he is very literal, but I see a major difference over the previous novel he read.

Audiobook and paper book reading together

Will this help your child? Every reader is different, so consider your child’s learning style and try different approaches to see what works best for them. Some may do well with simply the paper book, while others may enjoy a digital read using the Kindle app. Other kids are better auditory learners and audiobooks are an invaluable asset that may be all they need. Then some children, like my son, respond with two styles combined. Yes, reading along in a paper book while listening to a narrator is not simply for new readers. Using two senses helps my son to focus more on the words and what they mean. The benefits are something that have been studied and I will share more about that in another post

While I have written about OverDrive media app in the past, I think it is a wonderful resource that students, parents, and teachers may want to utilize more. It is an app that can be put onto a smartphone or tablet and utilized with students of varying ability levels to increase their confidence within class.

Has your child ever used an audiobook for school reading? I would love to know about their experience. As always, Tuesday Tales is all about sharing our love of books. Please let me know what you have read recently. Be sure to link up to your book posts in the comments below. Include something you read on your own, with a child, or someone else.

Five Apps to Help You Focus

#VZWBuzz Disclosure

This year, I am working on adding focus in my life. To do this, I am using any tools that may help me in my day to day. That means getting rid of clutter on my smartphone and homing in on apps that assist me in getting work done so I have more time with my family.

Social Media Focus Tools

My smartphone allows me to be connected no matter where I am. If I am waiting outside of school for the boys, I am able to check in on social media. When waiting at the doctor’s office, I can write a blog post. While sitting at the library letting the kids select books, I can create images for my business and share them in multiple ways. Here are five apps that I am using almost daily to bring more focus into my life in 2015.

Hootsuite – Social Media Management

This app is something that I must explore more. For too long, I have simply used it for keeping tabs on Twitter. As I try to simply life and keep more focus, I know that there is a lot more that Hootsuite can do for me. Technically, I could be using it for Facebook and LinkedIn. The free version of Hootsuite allows you to connect up to three social network accounts. It can even track analytics to assist you in scheduling at the best time of day. While I may not be utilizing all that the app has to offer, it still helps me. I am able to check Tweets that come to me, Direct Messages, and focus on specific hashtags like #VZWBuzz, and lists that I have created with Twitter friends.

JustUnfollow

Recently, ColoradoMom wrote Take Back Your Twitter Feed. Her post got me thinking about my cluttered Twitter feed. Sure I had my lists that I used most of the time, but what was going on with everyone that I followed? Over the last few weeks, I have been working to focus on my Twitter life. I miss the good old days and I pledged that I was going to get it under control. Emily mentioned using the website JustUnfollow.com, but I found the app version of this fantastic tool. While waiting for my oldest son to get out of middle school, I can sit inside my car and check in. I am able to monitor my Instagram and Twitter accounts. I can see who has unfollowed me, what accounts are inactive that I follow, and who has recently followed me. This is still a work in progress, but so far it has been helping me to get more active on Twitter and to reconnect with people.

Google Drive

For some reason, I never really paid much attention to Google Drive. Since our son started middle school, it became an easy way for TechyDad and I to share documents. When I started my Jamberry business, I saw another resource at my finger tips. I could save images to Google Drive and be able to download them to my phone at any time to send to a customer. Of course, Google Drive also allows me to save screen captures from my phone to quickly transfer to my computer for editing and use within blog posts like this. I love that I can share folders or keep them to myself. I am also able to further organize documents, photos, and more within specific folders.

Google Drive app

PicsArt Photo Studio

I have written about PicsArt before, but so much has been added to this app over time that it simply is a powerhouse for productivity. PicsArt allows me to make collages, watermark photos, edit pictures, and so much more. With additional fonts, backgrounds, and clipart, it is becoming a favorite to use for Instagram, blog posts (see above), and advertising.

PicsArt App for Android

These are a few additional items that I have recently made using PicsArt:

PicsArt Creations

WordPress

Thanks to the WordPress app, I can technically blog here, there, and anywhere. I just click on the icon and begin typing away on my smartphone if an idea pops in my head. This is huge because you just never know when and where something will come up and if there is time to stop and get it down, it is better than simply taking notes. While I prefer to blog using Windows Live Writer because of how I can arrange items, the WordPress app means that I can write, add in photos I create on PicsArt or another app on my phone and save the draft. Then, when I get home to my laptop, I am able to pull up the saved post and make any small adjustments needed to images and no-follow links if it is a sponsored post.

Charged and Ready to Capture the Holidays

#VZWBuzz Disclosure

The holidays have changed a lot since I was a child. Now, most adult members of the family have smartphones so they can snap photos and record precious moments on the go. Of course, this is great until you realize the red line on your phones battery is glaring at you. This means you have to stop and make sure to recharge your phone. During this time, you may miss a magical family moment. All of those photos that you shared on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and beyond zapped the battery.

Chanukah with the Droid Turbo

Enter the Droid Turbo.

This power house of a smartphone takes the Droid line to an entirely new level. My first smartphone was a Droid Bionic, so I am constantly amazed with how the phones have grown and changed over the years. No matter where we find ourselves this holiday season, the Droid Turbo has kept up with our needs. Recently, It saved the day when we left our camera at home during Thanksgiving.

The Droid Turbo

Droid Camera Action

This Droid smartphone has a camera that adjusts beautifully to different levels of light and motion. A wonderful item to have when you are trying to keep up with cousins running around at Thanksgiving, a holiday concert, skaters during Disney on Ice, and Chanukah candle lighting. The 21-megapixel camera means that we can print memories from the phone without worry. Oh and no need to waste a moment getting the camera ready, just flick your wrist and the camera comes alive in an instant. What has been most impressive this holiday season has been the flash on the Turbo. It has a dual LED that keeps color more true to life and helps us to avoid odd shadows that are common with smartphone flash use.

Celebrating the Festival of Lights

Super Charged Turbo Battery

The last thing you want to do when you are celebrating the holidays is pause to charge your phone. The battery life of Droid smartphone have always been top notch, but the Turbo outshines all of it’s predecessors.

Battery on the Droid Turbo

Yes, the Droid Turbo is a dream come true with a battery that can last up to 48 hours! We have never waited that long to test it, but it easily handles an entire day of holiday celebrations and social media shares without requiring recharge. Of course, for those times when it does need to charge, the Turbo is FAST. When using the Turbo Charger that comes with the phone, it can juice back eight hours in just 15 minutes. So even if you need to charge in an emergency, the time is minimal so you will not miss too much of the festivities.

What would you be able to accomplish this holiday season and beyond with a Droid Turbo? Don’t forget these are just two of the amazing features of this smartphone from Droid. More about the phone coming soon.
