A First Look At The BlackBerry Q10

Hi all.  TechyDad here, guest posting on my wife’s site.  A couple of weeks ago, I was given a Blackberry Q10 as part of the Verizon Lifestyle Bloggers program. Even as I just began to use it, I could see some major improvements that it had over my previous BlackBerry Bold.
BlackBerry Bold vs Q10

The first thing that I noticed was the outward appearance changes. The phone is a bit bigger. This is partly to accommodate a larger touch screen. In addition, while the Bold relied on a series of selection buttons and a touchpad “mouse”, the Q10 has eliminated both. Instead, the touch screen does all of the work. Swiping in various directions performs actions previously regulated to physical buttons. (More on this later.)

Next, I noticed that the Q10’s main screen resembles the screen on an Android or iOS smartphone. Apps are listed in a 3×4 grid with large icons on top and small (but still very readable) text beneath. The Bold would just show small icons. Yes, it wound up showing more per screen (18 to the Q10’s 12), but the drawback of an icon-only view is that it requires the user to know what each icon represents. At times, two apps can have icons that are confusingly similar. The text below really aids in figuring out which app you want to launch.

Third, the Bold wasn’t very intuitive as to how you needed to switch applications or close them when you were done. Eventually, I found out that I pressed the menu button from the home screen and chose Switch Application. I never did figure out how to close them, though. The Q10, by contrast, showed me how to app switch and close as part of its start up routine. From any screen, you simply swipe up. All of the running apps will be shown on the resulting screen as small screenshots with the app’s name and a close icon below. To close an app, you just tap the “close” icon and the app will be shut down.

Where swiping up gets you the running apps, swiping down gets you the settings screen. This gives you easy access to any setting on the Q10 that you might want to modify.

Taking screenshots are an additional improvement to the Bold. Previously, you needed to download a third party application. Now, however, you just press the volume up and down buttons at the same time and a photo of the screen will be taken immediately.

Finally, the BlackBerry Bold only had a rear facing camera. This meant that I could take photos of anything except myself. (Unless, of course, I turned the camera around and hoped that I was angling it properly.) The Q10, on the other hand, has both a front and rear facing camera. This means that video conferencing applications, such as Skype, are possible on the Q10. For a business phone, this can be invaluable as a simple conference call can be enhanced with video capabilities.

With all of these new features, the Q10 has left me itching to dive deep and see just what this phone can do. More is definitely to come.

Smartphone Typing Options

In my pre-Smartphone world, I was a firm believer that I had to have a cell phone with a keyboard. In my defense, it helped me to text, Tweet, and update Facebook via SMS capabilities. The prices were similar and it saved me from using the alternative method of multi-key alphabet . My world changed when I got my first smartphone. Suddenly, I was thrust into the world of predominately touch screen phones. I have to admit, I never looked back once I was there.

Of course, there are many long time smartphone users that really like their keyboard option when using the phone. The options for this type of phone are very limited these days. Several months ago, BlackBerry announced their newest phone the Z10 and long time users gasped at a BlackBerry device without the keyboard. As a Verizon Lifestyle Blogger, I received the Z10 and it was a great phone. I actually had a difficult time understanding the need for the alternative typing space. Of course, I was not accustomed to a BlackBerry device with said keyboard and was used to a larger screen for viewing items on my phone.

Nobody should have been surprised when shortly after the release of the Z10, BlackBerry introduced the world to the Q10. My husband uses a BlackBerry for work and agreed to help me test out the Q10 (link to phone specs on Verizon Wireless website). As you can see, it looks a lot like his previous BlackBerry device and will make hardcore fans happy with the brand favorite QWERTY Keyboard. I have to admit, I am intrigued by the Q10 and am itching to see how it compares to the Z10.

BlackBerry Bold vs Q10

In addition to this, the Q10 has the new BlackBerry Hub, BBM Chat, BlackBerry Remember, and other features. There is a lot more to share about the Q10 and that will be coming soon. For now, I leave you with my Aloha Friday question of the week:

If you were to create your perfect smartphone, would it have a keyboard or touchscreen and why?

Some Time with Vine

For quite some time, I watched as friends were using an app with their iPhone called Vine. Simply put, Vine is a social media platform that allows you to be creative and share 6 second videos. I stayed away from it for a while and then got a little nudge from my fellow Verizon Lifestyle Bloggers that were trying it out with their Apple and Android devices.

The Vine App for Android

My first Vine was introducing my new Windows Phone just to get used to using it. After that, I was a little more creative. Why not showcase how I am going to have to debate between two different types of smartphones.

Then I had a bit more fun. I made a Vine to share with my boys. Yes, I had some explaining to do when they got home from school and saw their TMNT items had been used.

I have had fun sharing the non-stop rain in our area and a few other items while waiting for the boys outside of school. I do believe my favorite use of Vine was at when we went to the miSci Museum over the weekend. I could quickly showcase a few of the fun items that we explored in a more authentic way that a simple photo can not capture.

Of course, a great example was when the boys were completely fascinated with one of the new items in the Notions of Motions Exhibit. I think they would have stayed testing this out a lot longer if we had allowed it.

So are you on Vine yet? If you are I would love to know how you are utilizing it. For me, it will be a great way to showcase educational fun and learning as we travel.

Phone to the Rescue at Mabee Farm Historic Site

A week ago today, I was on a field trip with my son’s class. I was very excited to be headed to a new place that I had never been to before. It was a chance to be with my son, really meet his classmates, and explore the Mabee Farm Historic Site. The night before the trip, I was writing a post about setting up my new Windows Phone as a member of the Verizon Lifestyle Bloggers. I used my camera to take some photos to use.

The next morning was hectic as we prepared for what would be a very wet and cold day outside at Mabee Farm. While loading up my things, I tossed my camera in my backpack. When we arrived in the barn for the introduction by the curator of the museum, I tried to take a photo. My camera buzzed because it’s memory was filled. I opened it up and then realized my SD card was at home.

Mabee Farm Historic Site

This is where my current smartphone, RAZR HD, saved the day. I had kept this phone with me since I had a case for it and knew it would be safe in the rain. I was also more comfortable using it at this point. Most important with this scenario, it had another memory card in it and I knew I would be safe taking lots of photos. All of the photos above were taken with my RAZR. This phone helped me to capture memories of the kids learning about chamber pots, life on a colonial New York State farm, and using sheep to make yarn.

Since Aloha Friday is being brought back, this weeks question is:

Have you ever been caught without your camera working and had to use your cell phone? Let me know what happened and how you made out. I was very lucky that I captured some great memories of our time on the Mohawk River in colonial times.

My First Windows Phone

As a member of the Verizon Lifestyle Bloggers, I get to check out new phones to see how they work in my life. I have to admit, it is exciting to try new smartphones on different platforms to see how they compare one another. When I was asked if I would like to try a Windows phone, I agreed. While I have never tried one, I know many people that love them and figured it would make me a more well rounded consumer.

Nokia Lumia 822 Windows Phone

Disclosure: As a member of the Verizon Lifestyle Bloggers, I received a Nokia Lumia 822 Windows Phone (link to information page). The UP allows me to track my activity, sleep, and other items with the app that go along with the device. There was no other compensation. I am a long time Verizon customer, and all opinions are my own.

So far I have taken the Lumia 822 out of the box and charged it. Once that is finished, it will be time to move my SIM card over and set the phone up. I have to say, a few first impressions here. The phone is very polite. I like that it welcomes me and says goodbye when I turn it off.

The polite Windows Smartphone

If you are a Windows Phone user, I would love some advice. What are some of the apps that are a must on your phone? I have certain ones that I adore on my phone and hoping to find most of them available for Windows Phones as well. One great resource is Selfish Mom where she shared her favorite Windows Phone apps. Robyn’s Online World has also shared a variety of posts about her experience with a Windows Phone.
