Disney On Ice – Fall/Winter ’09-’10

As a child, my family went to Walt Disney World almost every summer. During the winter, I also have fond memories of going to see Disney On Ice. My husband and I would love to go to Disney World each year, but it is not in the finances right now. We have been lucky and gone to see Disney on Ice at our local arena several times with our oldest son. Last year, my parents and I brought my oldest son. This was just around the time that we booked our first family trip to Walt Disney World for May.

We saw the 100 Years of Magic show and it was amazing. I loved watching my son’s face as he saw the stage on the ice for the first time, and then witnessed all of the familiar characters skate by. Nana and Papa even splurged and bought him some Mickey binoculars.

Walking with Dinosaurs

As the Mommy of two little boys, I am quite familiar with dinosaurs. I’ll admit it, even as a little girl I was fascinated with these amazing creatures that roamed our planet. I still remember my clay model dinosaur that I had to made for a report in second grade.

NHL has been fascinated with dinosaurs since he was around two years old. For quite a while, we watched a lot of the cartoon Harry and the Bucket Full of Dinosaurs. We have read a ton of dinosaur books, done a dinosaur birthday theme where I made a volcano cake for the dinosaurs to parade around.

Recently, the Walking with Dinosaurs live show came to our area. We toyed with whether or not to take the boys to the show. Eventually, tickets came our way and the four of us went together. If you ever have the chance to go please do. It is worth the money to see this arena spectacular. Yes, the dinosaurs were loud, but the kids were too fixated on the gigantic creatures towering over the audience below. The information in the show is amazing. Our son loves the fact that dinosaurs are related to birds. As an adult, I loved the mix of the history, dinosaur facts and humor that was included in the show.

Checking everything out   Look dinosaurs

Before we saw the show, we happened to catch a making of Walking with Dinosaurs on PBS. We saw the long process that created these phenomenal life-like dinosaurs. Every detail was put into them and it showed. The night before the show I Tweeted to see if anyone knew about taking photographs during the show. The next morning I had a Tweet from DinoTalesByKari with the answer. Kari just happens to be a Voodoo Puppeteer on the Walking with Dinosaurs North American Tour (who also blogs from the road). She told me that photography is permitted so long as no flash was used. You have to love Twitter and Kari too!

I was a good girl. Before the show I played with our camera to get the setting the best I could. The arena was quite dark, but I still managed to get a few good shots. Here are some from the afternoon we went:

Inspired by the dinosaurs, my question for this week is:

What is your favorite dinosaur and why?

For the record, I have always had a soft spot in my heart for Stegosaurus. Not sure why, but I was always intrigued by the armor and beauty of this dinosaur that I never did a report on in second grade.

Sesame Street Live 2009

Over the last three years JL, NHL and I have seen three different Sesame Street Live shows. Each one has been fabulous and encouraged us to come back for another. This year the show was Elmo Makes Music and it lived up to our expectations. The show started with Bert, Ernie and Rubber Duckie coming out to introduce the letter and number of the day.

The Letter of the Day -- J The Number of the Day -- 8

Soon after this the stage exploded with even more favorite Sesame Street characters. The kids in the audience went wild as Cookie Monster, Telly Monster, Prarie Dawn, Zoe, Grover, Big Bird, Elmo and others joined the group.

JSL and Cousin S were taking it all in. They just sat there watching as the characters danced and sang fun songs on the stage.

Dancing monsters - 1 Dancing monsters - 2

The little guy started out on my lap and eventually got fussy and wanted JL. At that point I took over with the camera duties. For the first half of the show Cousin S was happy dancing in front of Uncle I to the music. It was so fun to watch her with the Mamba number.

JSL on my lap and Cousin S dancing S dancing and watching the characters

Here is the way the kids looks after the switch off.

S and her Daddy  The boys

After a while JSL started to get into the show. He was telling JL each time he saw Cookie Monster and Grover. They were definitely the highlight of his show experience.

Fuzzy and funny Grover Cookie Monster and Rosita

Cousin S was excited when she saw Count. She demonstrated her count laugh (priceless) and stood mesmerized with the happenings. She was also quite fond of the part on Elmo’s World.

The Count Elmo and Dorothy

Soon after Elmo’s World it was time for the characters to take a break before the second half. Here are a few more photos from the start of the show.

Sesame Street Live 2009 - Part 1

While waiting for the second half of the show the kids played by our seats and had some snacks. They also sold the $8 Elmos balloons that we did not purchase. The boys talked about seeing Cookie Monster and Grover again.

Stretching before the second half One of the $8 Elmo balloons

Little did we know that a mystery would take place. The mystery of the missing Sesame Street characters. The two in question are seen below. They are fuzzy and blue. One may be seen eating a cookie and the other with a Super cape.

The Disappearing Duo

Why the mystery? Neither of these characters showed up again in the second half of the show! There was much disappoinement, but they did get over it. During the second half of the show Cousin S also made up her mind that she wanted to sit with Uncle JL and JSL. She made herself right at home and enjoyed the view.

The rest of the show was more fast paced than the first act. Bert came out for a 1970’s Disco number, Big Bird and Baby Bear (we all cringed when he showed up on the scene) sang Rockin Robbin, the Count did a tribute to the number 8, and there was the finale. Here are some favorite photos from the end of the show.

Sesame Street Live 2009 - Part 2

If you ever have the opportunity to see a Sesame Street Live show I highly recommend it. They put on a highly entertaining production for a reasonable price. I hope we will be able to see them again in 2010!

The 2009 Sesame Street Live Pre-Game Show

We arrived at the theater for Sesame Street Live about an hour before the show started. We wanted to make sure we had time to find parking and settle the kids in. After looking at the Sesame Street merchandise, that we did not purchase, we went to find out seats and take our winter gear off. The three kids sat down to check everything out.

The three cousins wait for the show

As you can see JSL brought his Cookie Monster stuffed friend and Cousin S brought her Baby Elmo. NHL preferred just to sit back and wait for the show. He was afraid to move, go say hello to friends or do anything. He simply wanted to sit and watch the stage. In fact he got quite upset with photo taking that disrupted his view.

Mr. Serious did not want to be bothered

Meanwhile the two little kiddos were having fun checking out each other’s stuffed friend.

Yup, Elmo is still on my tummy! The toddlers talk

The little kids got a little antsy waiting, so we gave them some snacks brought from home. They enjoyed and then Cousin S decided she had to explore the theater some more.

On the move with Elmo Yes, these seats are good

Finally the time was near. We had to get the kids seated. When we started JSL was sitting with me, Cousin S with Uncle I, NHL solo and JL taking photos.

Uncle I and Cousin S ready for their first show C'est Moi with JSL and NHL next to me

The lights went out and Big Bird started to talk to the crowd. It was finally time for the show!

More from the show coming soon.
