Memories of my childhood – Giveaway

Shhhhhh. . . . I have a secret for you. Tomorrow is my birthday. As a reminder that my birthday is in December the temperatures finally took a major nose dive. This morning it was only 6 degrees outside with a windchill of -11! Happy almost birthday to me!

When I was in Elementary school, I have fond memories of my birthday parties. Many years I had them at an indoor pool and friends would come for Carvel ice cream cake after the swim. Of course, many years my goodie bag of gifts for friends was always Avon related. Why? Well, my mother was an Avon lady for many years. So we would give away funky nail polish, fun chap stick, or whatever was big at the time. I also recall having friends over and playing with the little Avon lipstick samples. Oh my, there were so many and they were all so very different, it was so neat as a young kid.

My mother stopped selling Avon a long time ago (more years than I care to mention), but my love of Avon has continued as an adult. When teaching, the homeroom teachers and I would buy our kids (all girls) Avon Christmas presents. Now, I often purchase makeup, chapstick, moisturizer, jewelry, Breast Cancer Awareness merchandise (love my pen from them), and even hair care products. Of course, the holidays are also a fabulous time to stock up on Avon items to add to gifts. I love their bath gels that are great with my knit washcloths.

Thanksgiving Day Shopping

Black Friday sales are intriguing to me, but fighting traffic, trying to park, waiting on never ending lines to check out and dealing with rude people keeps me away. I was thrilled to see that CVS actually started their amazing deals on Thanksgiving day. We left early before heading to dinner and stopped at the CVS that I like near here. I had recently used my ECB’s on allergy medicine for NHL (I was afraid they would get lost) so I had to spend money this time around. This is the first time I had really gone to CVS for good deals in a while, I have been doing the single check rebates at Rite Aid recently.

This is what we bought Thanksgiving afternoon at CVS:

Thanksgiving CVS Style

Like I said, I had no ECBs to roll over from last time,  I still did VERY well.

Total regular price —  $66.89
Total price w/items on sale — $50.19
Coupons used — $23.00     (a $10/50 coupon printed off when I scanned my Extra Card – so I had incentive)
Money spend — 29.53
ECBs earned — $42.71
Profit — $13.18

Not too shabby for items that we will use.

Did you get any good bargains on Thanksgiving or Black Friday? Please share!

A few of my favorite things

15 Days of Marketing with Jessica Knows

Today is the first day of the 15 Days of Marketing by Jessica Knows. When I read about what Jessica was planning on her blog I had to jump in. She is an amazing wealth of information and I knew I would learn a lot from her.

For homework today Jessica asked each of us participating to list what our three favorite brands are and why.

Think, think, think. . . . can you smell my brain about to catch on fire?  Seriously, who knew that this could be so hard to do. There are so many brands that I like. Some I like as a woman, mother, wife, baker, teacher, human – and each for different reasons!

In the end I decided on these three brands:

Scholastic –  As a mother and teacher Scholastic is a company you can trust. They have top notch books for kids of all ages. In addition to this, they have amazing resources for teachers, parents and students alike. Their website, magazine, and books have a wealth of information.  Almost anyone you ask will recall looking at the Scholastic catalogs that would be sent home from school as a child. I still smile and get excited when they come home with my kindergarten kid.

Hanes – Years ago when you thought of Hanes you would only visualize underwear. These days Hanes has their underwear for the entire family, sweats, and other active wear. With two little boys I need items that will stand up to their active lives and Hanes does just that. I know when I buy something for my oldest son it will last to hand down to my little guy.

Nintendo – I still remember saving up my money for my original NES system. From there my family purchased one of the old style Game Boys and then Super Nintendo. When my husband and I were married we thought about buying a gaming system. We always knew it would be a Nintendo brand. After we had our second child I decided to surprise my husband with a Nintendo Wii. Even our non-gaming friends are in love with what Nintendo has done with this system. It is interactive, makes you move, think and get involved with the game you are playing. In addition to this I recently won a DS system and love the portability and versatility. Nintendo still continues to show they are on top of the gaming industry.I am looking forward to getting to know our Wii.

So those are three of my favorite brands. Now I feel so much like Oprah, only I do not have an audience full of people that will be receiving these items. . . not yet at least!

Giant pizza and chopping time

For several weeks we have been looking for one item that will be needed for NHL’s Halloween costume. You would think that it had to be something horribly complicated since it has taken us so long to find. The sad truth is that it was only a plain white turtleneck shirt. Who knew that this would be so difficult to find here?

Yesterday we were on a mission. We opted to go to the more "quiet" of the malls to see if Sears had the pesky white turtleneck that we desired. On the way there we stopped for lunch. We have been curious for a while about a pizza place that had opened on the route there back in the summer. We finally went in. They have what they call "The Big Mama" pizza. This pizza is HUGE by any standard. It is a 30" pizza and the slices are larger than our heads. The boys ordered some slices and I just had to take a photo of these monster slices.

Big Mama Slice eating time

We really enjoyed the food there and the owners were extremely nice. We will definitely be going back  again.

After lunch we went to the mall. Our first shop was Sears. Once we made our way to the boys section we almost gave up. Then out of the corner of his eye, JL saw turtleneck shirts. We purchased a white, red and pattern one for NHL to stay warm this fall and winter. Next we wanted to head to one other store in the mall. NHL was exhausted. We think the pizza must have made him sleepy. Luckily JSL was antsy and wanted out of his stroller. So I decided to stuff NHL into the stroller and he was willing to go for the ride.

One tired 5 year old

On our way back to the car we stopped at the Sears Portrait studio to make an appointment for NHL’s 5 year portraits on Sunday. Last week we had to cancel them thanks to his pinkeye. The appointment was made and I decided that I wanted to finally go through with something I had been thinking about.

What was that you ask?

I have been toying with getting my hair cut again for quite some time. I knew pretty much what I wanted to do, but I could not decide where to go to have it done. With the budget being smaller these days, I opted to go where the boys get their hair done. There is just something about not spending more than $15 for a simple hair cut.

When I went in I asked the hair stylist to take a photo of my hair before. I had not had it cut since I had 12 inches taken off for my third hair donation after JSL was born. Now my hair is finally bad to the thickness it was before the pregnancy and is quite long again. Thanks to this it is hard to work with and quite heavy on my poor head.

Hair before

Please ignore the frizz, it is the story of my life (even with products made specifically to combat that issue). I simply asked to have my hair cut to about shoulder length so that I could still get it back and out of my face if I wanted to. She worked and worked and worked on it. You should have seen the pile of hair on the ground. I must have had at least 7-8 inches cut off thanks to the curl factor.

When it was done I felt so free. We went home and I immediately found my headbands to push it back (wearing the one that Airing Dirty Laundry gave me in our Swaparooni last year) . Here is what it looks like after. Please note I did not have my hair colored. The lighting in our dining room is that bad that it made my hair look really dark. The photo above is pretty accurate.

After the chopping

So today we will have NHL’s portraits done and try for our first real family portrait. All of our red shirts and jeans are ready to go!
