Life without an IEP

Something I have not talked about much on my blog is the fact that NHL has been receiving physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) services for years now. It all began when NHL was almost two and still not walking. He was talking sentences for months, but could not seem to let go to walk on his own. Balance was also a big challenge for him.

Daycare was concerned at the time and suggested that we call Early Intervention (EI) for an evaluation. I finally did. We quickly qualified for more comprehensive testing. Of course listening to some of the talk made me paranoid. There I was in my first full time teaching job worried that my baby may have cerebral palsy or worse.  JL and I took him to see a pediatric neurologist. She believed that NHL was hypotonic, hyperflexible and had very low muscle tone. She explained that his core muscles were making it hard for him to simply stand and balance. The simple things that we take for granted would exhaust him. She felt that adding aggressive PT into his mix would make a huge improvement.

A few months shy of his second birthday NHL began PT. Just a few weeks later while visiting Uncle I and Aunt M he walked alone for the first time. Lots of time and energy was spent working on his gross motor skills. Of course this was at a cost to his fine motor development. The December after he started EI I questioned the need for OT. Unfortunate for us, someone did not do their homework. Had we waited just a few short weeks to do the assessment NHL would have qualified for services. So more time went by. After a few months (almost a year into PT) I raised my voice more. I expressed my concern about the initial evaluation and was able to get another one done. This time NHL "failed" with flying colors. Yes, I was thrilled about that because my child could finally get the assistance he needed.

My goal was always to push hard and be able to dissolve NHL’s IEP before kindergarten. My wish was realized in January when we met with the district and NHL’s providers at the time. He did not qualify for an IEP, but would still receive OT and PT services in kindergarten.I completely value PT for helping him to walk, run, jump and keep up with his peers most of the time. PT has also given him strength to keep up with other daily activities. OT has been a major worry of mine. NHL’s wrists/hands get tired quickly. He has difficulty writing for long periods of time. Going into kindergarten where the demands would increase in this area had me quite worried last winter. Thanks to that and me being a BIG advocate, NHL was allowed to participate in a summer enrichment program. It was basically a half day camp that worked a lot with PT and OT skills. The problem – the OT that worked with him focused on other things rather than fine motor. I was aware of this and worked hard on items with him all summer. Coloring, play dough, bead stringing, cutting….all items that we did to keep up his skills.

To my horror NHL’s services did not begin for weeks once the school year began. He went without services for well over a month. OT in particular was very late and started in mid October. NHL loves to learn and is anxious to read and write. He does not like that his writing is not like others (read adults mainly). This frustration may hold him back and has been something I keep telling the OT. To make a long story short I just found out that his current therapist may be moved to another school in January.

WHAT?!?!

I was so upset I could not talk. We FINALLY just got things rolling and she may be gone? It takes time for a child to build a trust with a new adult and really take off. NHL is starting to do that now and it may be gone. When I mentioned it to NHL’s teacher she was floored. It was news to her. Now I sit here wondering what to do. I almost feel like I have little power because my child does not have an IEP. Who knew that that formal piece of paper had so much power?

I may be making some phone calls to higher powers that provide the services for our district. I want to know why they would sthey kneeone working with children in a school if they knew she would be leaving in January. They had to know this since the other school is reopening and some of the children will be going back to their home school. This would and should have been avoided and I am angry. My child’s success is in jeopardy and I know it is not the fault of the provider, but is 110% her provider and the district.

Matzo balls for the Pilgrims

NHL’s kindergarten class will be having a Thanksgiving feast for all of the kids and their families later today. We were asked to send in an item that is special and represents our culture/heritage/religion. JL and I came up with a few ideas, but NHL made his decision the minute he heard the word matzo balls.  I know, it sounds strange sending in matzo balls to a Thanksgiving feast, but this group of Pilgrims will have them in their bellies.

It had been quite some time since we had made matzo balls on our own. I bought matzo meal and eggs and was all ready to go. Last night, we decided to make six times the batch on the package. According to that, it would make approximately 48 of the yummy wonders that would be one inch in diameter.

Here are 43 matzo balls just after they were put in the pot for their 30-40 minute "bath" in boiling water.

Starting off in the pot

Of course, JL and I had to taste test one to make sure they were acceptable. YUM! Our entire house smelled like Passover. . . in a really good way. These are the final products when they were cooling off to be put away for the Thanksgiving feast.

Completed batch of matzo balls

Hopefully, they can be heated without killing them for everyone to enjoy. JSL and I will be heading to the festivities to see how things go and hopefully take some photos to share later.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

My question for this week changed thanks to events on Thursday. I had planned on doing something to link up with a bloggy friend. Unfortunately, plans changed because I can not think clearly enough to do it properly. I will explain below.

This week my question is:

Have you ever had pink eye? If your child has, do you have any tips on how to wrangle them (aside from sitting on them) for drops?

Yesterday at around 10:00 in the morning my called ID showed a number from the school district. I was hoping that it was the OT calling about things. No, it was not her. The person on the other end simply said to me "Hi Mrs ___  guess who I have here with me?"

Notice that she did not identify who she was. I was able to figure it out. Apparently the pinkeye monster that has been wrecking havoc in NHL’s kindergarten class got him. I asked if it was just irritated from forgetting his allergy medication. She agreed that it may be from that and would give it until after lunch to see. Meanwhile I called our doctor’s office to get something called in quick because I knew it was not good. The nurse had already sent another child home with goo coming out of her eye, another was home sick with it and 4+ kids had it last week, plus I was dealing with it last weekend.

Bad vibes were coming from this entire thing. Sure enough at about noon the nurse called back. His eye was more swollen and getting really red now. I packed up JSL and went to school to pick up NHL. By 1:30 we were on our way to the pharmacy to get the drops that were called in. NHL was NOT happy about this. He recalled the last pinkeye that he had just a month ago.

Exhausted after eye drops

Yesterday I literally sat on him to get the drops in. Sure he may only be five, but man the kid is strong. When he went to bed his eye was really red and we warned him when he got up it may be stuck shut. Sure enough at 11:00 he woke up and it was crusted over. It happened again at 6:00 this morning. I am worried because his eye looks really bad after 4 sets of drops now. The worst part, I am not sure if a bump/abcess like object is forming under his eye by his cheek bone. I will be keeping a close eye on it now and see how it goes.

Poor monkey

Susan, I promise I will do something even more special ASAP. For now I must work on wiping eye boogers and washing our hands and everything else in the house. WIth any luck Thanksgiving break next week will help to wipe out the pinkeye that has invaded NHL’s classroom.

Mitzvah Day Fall 2008

Have you done a mitzvah today? If you are not sure what this means, do not worry many people are probably curious as well. The term mitzvah, a hebrew word,  has come to mean any act of human kindness. For further information about the historical meaning of mitzvah I will point you here.

People strive to do mitzvot in their everyday lives without making it obvious that they are doing so. Each year our synagogue has a Mitzvah Day in the fall where congragants go out into the community to do good for others. Some of the opportunities were to help out at the Ronald McDonald House, serve food at the local mission, and dance to entertain residents at a senior center.

Beautiful Fall Day

The children from the hebrew school in grades K-3 were asked to participate in the dancing. NHL was very excited about this and wanted to go with his friends. We decided to participate. Everyone was supposed to arrive at our synagogue at 12:30 for lunch. When we arrived we were greeted by my grandmother working at the registration table.

A friendly face at the registration desk

After lunch we drove to the senior center for the dancing. NHL was quite excited and had a hard time waiting to get on the "stage" to dance.

All ready to dance

Here is a shot of him dancing and having a fabulous time. He really is starting to understand the broad picture of what doing a mitzvah is now thanks to hebrew school.

Group dance

Meanwhile JSL was a little antsy. At the end he decided to untie JL’s laces and have some fun.

Getting into trouble

This was a great experience and we look forward to future Mitzvah Days to participate in within the community.

So will you do a mitzvah today?
