Boost Kid Essentials

As a parent, I always worry about my children getting enough fruits and vegetables in their diets. My husband and I have gone out of our way with different cook books to try to sneak them into our meals at times. Unfortunately, doing that is not always practical.

This worry was amplified a few months back when I took my youngest for his 18 month well check up. JSL is a picky eater to say the least. There are days that he will barely eat anything. The exception to the rule would be cheese. Most days I can get him to eat at least that once during the day. Of course, a diet of only cheese does not fulfill the daily recommended amounts of vitamins and other important nutrients in his diet. Our doctor expressed her concern that day. Her main point was the lack of steady protein in his diet. Since JSL did not drink a set amount of cows milk (he is still nursing) we were not sure what his daily intake is. We eat a lot of soy products, but she wanted to make sure additional protein was added to his diet.

We were worried about starting milk and or peanut butter too early. Our oldest son had a milk allergy (only to plain cows milk), so waiting as long as possible to introduce that was key. When we went shopping we kept eyeballing the different nutritional drink supplements for children and wondered about them. At about the same time, I was given the opportunity from the Family Review Network and Nestle Nutrition to try Boost Kid Essentials Nutritionally Complete Drink.

Our Review:

Both of my boys were very intrigued with the Boost Kid Essentials package when it arrived at our house. I placed the boxes into the refrigerator so they would be chilled for the boys. The other morning, the little guy refused to eat breakfast. We were heading out for a lot of errands and I did not want him to be hungry. This was the perfect opportunity to try the new Boost Kid Essentials product. As soon as I put the box onto his tray, he grabbed it.

Boost Kid Essentials in motion

His little hands had a hard time holding it, so I assisted him. JSL really seemed to like it. He kept asking for more and finished most of the 8.25 ounce drink.

Little guy takes his try

My five year old son also wanted to try. He was immediately in awe of the larger extended straw that is on the box. Little did he know that it contained live active cultures to help boost his immune system. This thrilled me since kindergarten, and all classrooms in general, tend to breed a lot of germs.

Kindergarten kid tries some

NHL immediately told me that it tasted like a milk shake to him. He liked the flavor and asked what other kinds they had. When I told him chocolate, he asked if we could get some of that to try one day. I told him sure since both of the boys really enjoyed it. Of course, I had to take a taste. It had a very nice vanilla flavor and was smooth. I know a lot of the other nutritional drinks can be gritty, but this was not.

We will definitely be purchasing more Boost Kid Essentials for our boys. It is a good thing for us to have on hand for those days when the kids need a little something extra. At least I know my little guy will drink this and not toss it on the ground like most of the foods that we try during these tough toddler days.

Aerobic walking fun

Last weekend, I made a sort of confessional on my blog. In the post I need to move it move it, I admitted that I need to add exercise into my life. The WiiFit was not my thing and had to find something. Sunday night, while getting the little guy to settle, I turned on Exercise on Demand. I watched the start of several things and put them into my brain. After JSL was asleep, JL and I tried the DVD that I took out of the library. Problem: the wrong DVD was in the case.

We turned to Exercise on Demand and decided to try Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shed since I had been reading a lot about it. We ran into a few problems. First, we did not have enough space. Second, thanks to the lack of space, I encountered a jumping jack related injury from getting hit by my loving hubby. Third – damn Jillian makes you work hard! Talk about burning and hurting. I liked it in general, but until I have a bigger space it does not work well.

The next day I was sore. I knew that this was a good thing. It meant that I was working my muscles. I started to do more research on exercise videos to try. I kept coming back to the same person. That person was Leslie Sansone and her walking videos. Tuesday, when NHL got home from school, I put the Family Walking video on and gave it a try. Wow! The boys and I had a great time and 22 minutes later I had an amazing workout.

Wednesday morning the little guy and I set out to try another one of Leslie Sansone’s workouts. This time it was the Walk & Tone 2 mile routine. This was about 32 minutes and after I felt amazing. I was energized and wanted more. It actually made me obsessed with getting a DVD of my own. In the afternoon, I went out and purchased the only Leslie Sansone DVD that I could find.

Leslie Sansone - Walk at Home

Last night, JL and I tried it out. We did the one mile routine. That made 3 miles and about 46 minutes of exercise for me yesterday. The shocking part, I wanted more!

Early Thursday morning, the little guy and I were ready to "walk" with Leslie. I put on the new DVD and got ready to do 2 miles. I really liked it a lot and could feel it working, especially during the second mile. I felt like I could do more, but a certain toddler had other thoughts.

So my question this week is:

Have you ever done a Leslie Sansone workout? If you have, is there one (or more) that you would recommend? Any other suggestions would also be greatly appreciated.

Nature’s Source Review & Giveaway

I will be the first one to admit that I detest cleaning the bathroom. Of course, I doubt many people really like cleaning them. Through the years, we have found that the best products to clean our tub and other items were with those cute Scrubbing Bubbles. Although it does a great job, I could not do the cleaning because the fumes and scent bothered my asthma. Thank goodness hubby is sweet and has done it for us through the years.

Recently, I was given the chance by Family Review Network to try out Nature’s Source Natural Bathroom Cleaner.

Nature's Source Natural Bathroom cleaner

Here are some facts about the product that made me excited to try it for my family:

Nature’s Source products use plant-based, biodegradable cleaners and they have the cleaning power of Windex and Scrubbing Bubbles, brand names you already know and trust. They clean naturally and effectively, leaving nothing behind but a fresh scent. The cleaners are more than 99 percent natural, packaged in recyclable bottles, partly produced by renewable energy from a local landfill, and recognized for safer chemistry by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Design for the Environment (DfE) program.

My Review with photos:

I decided to test out the Nature’s Source Natural Bathroom cleaner myself. Hubby had recently cleaned the tub, so I opted to use the sink. If you are a parent, you know that when you have kids that use the bathroom on their own, the sink is a grime magnet. Below is what the sink area looked like before my cleaning began.

Nasty faucet and dirty sink

Next, I sprayed the Nature’s Source Natural Bathroom cleaner into the sink and on the faucet itself. The first thing I noticed was the foam that formed and the little bubbles moving around the area. As I continued to let it work, it suddenly dawned on me. What you ask? There was barely any scent and certainly no harsh fumes. I had no issues breathing and continued to clean without any problem. Here are the bubbles doing their magic.

Look at those Scrubbling Bubbles working

Before I knew it, it was time to rinse off the suds and reveal a clean faucet and sink.

Entire area is ready to go

I immediately ran to my husband to show him the photos. We will definitely continue to use this product. It is not only good for the planet, safe for my kids, but does an amazing job on soap scrum and hard water stains.

A Chance for you to win!

Manifest Your Magnificence

Growing up in the world today is tough thanks to the society we live in. As parents, we want to do everything to help our children to succeed. One of the most important items we need to assist our children with is their self-esteem. Simply telling your child that you love them, and teaching them academics is not enough. It is more important than ever to help children to believe in who they are and what they can be.

Once your child enters school, the safe cocoon that you have given them is forever exposed to the realities of life. Other children will often tell them they can not do things, or that they are doing something wrong. If a child hears this too often they will quickly believe it to be the truth. I learned this last year when my son went off to preschool, and even more so this year with kindergarten. Prior to kindergarten NHL rarely uttered the words "I can’t" and then they became a daily occurance.

I recently received a new product called Manifest Your Magnificence that was created by Susan T Howson. I selected the set of 64 affirmation cards that you can use to help strengthen your child’s self-esteem.  Each of the cards has an "I am" statement on the front coupled with a gorgeous kid friendly illustration. On the back of the card is an example of what the statement may mean to an individual.

I am positive

The cards are meant for children that are 6-12 years old. I used them with my five year old son. He loved looking through the cheerful cards to see what they had to say. We would sit down and read them together. Some days we would go back and forth thinking of items that related to the affirmation in front of us. Other days it was a perfect chance to let him practice writing. He would simply write a few words and draw a picture to make his own creation to go along with that card. NHL wants to make his own "book" with the writings that he made using the cards as inspiration. He knows that he can be an author and is not using "can’t" as often these days. The possibilities with the Manifest Your Magnificence cards are truly endless. Howson suggests using them to write, talk, draw, sing, act, dance, or to carry around to remind them of who they really are.

 I am a genius

As an educator, I know that I could have used these in many ways within my classroom. I would have loved them as pre-writing prompts for my students to do as they came into my room. I would have had them waiting on their desks to work on while I went around checking in assignments. Not only would the cards get them writing, but it would make them think about who they are and what they can be. With later elementary and early middle school students, finding their identity can be tricky and this would definitely assist them in their journey. Thanks to the sturdy stock that the cards are made on, I know that they would hold up well within an academic setting. The convenient gift box that they come in would store nicely right in or on my desk.

I am unique

The set of 64 affirmation cards may be purchased directly from Magnificent Creations Limitee. The cost of the set is $25.95 + shipping from their company in Canada.

Thank you to  Susan T Howson and the Family Review Network for this wonderful review opportunity.

The No-Cry Nap Solution – review

As the mother of two little boys, I have learned to expect anything. My oldest, NHL, is five years old. When he was younger, he craved naps. We would always know when he was tired and ready to rest. Each morning at the same time, he would go to sleep with no major battles. NHL switched to afternoon naps at daycare when he was two. The summer before he started PreK NHL was still taking naps. Then, when he started school "poof" the naps were gone. Rather than nap he would go to sleep earlier and was a very happy and well rested little guy.

Of course, I always assumed that since my oldest napped easily that the little guy would. In hind sight, I should have assumed it would be the opposite. My little guy has always kept me on my toes. Napping has been no different. JSL is 20 months old now and showing his independence. He wants to see, touch, explore and do everything. He is afraid of missing things when big brother is home from kindergarten. The boys share a room, so getting JSL to sleep in his crib at night on his own is a tough. If he cries, jumps up and down, or fusses too much he will not allow NHL to get rest. Thanks to this, JSL usually falls asleep in our bed.

Although falling asleep in our room is not a big deal, it does cause some complications come nap time. JSL is used to falling asleep with my husband or myself. Settling in his crib was not something that he knew how to do. He would hoot, holler, jump up and down and shake from crying so much. A mommy can only handle so much of this.

At just the right time I was asked to review The No Cry Nap Solution by Elizabeth Pantley. Pantley is the bestselling author of The No-Cry Sleep Solution that many of my friends have used over the years.

The co-cry nap solution

Right when the book arrived, JSL’s naps became erratic at best. He would fight sleep, cry if we walked toward his room, and wake within 20-30 minutes of being in his crib. Some days he would settle for a nap on his own, other days he would fall asleep nursing and be transferred to his crib. The lack of a consistent nap was starting to take its toll on everyone in the family.

Pantley begins the book with a chapter dedicated to the importance of naps and how much sleep children need. She explains that although naps only take a short time during the day, they help to shape the rest of the hours within the childs day. The following are some of the ways that Pantley says that naps benefit children:

  • Naps are a biological necessity.
  • Naps reduce the day’s fussiness, whining, and tantrums.
  • Naps increase learning capacity for babies.
  • Naps fill gaps from poor nighttime sleep.
  • Naps improve a child’s mood.
  • Naps improve brain development.
  • Naps improve the bedtime routine.
  • Naps increase attention span.
  • Naps ensure proper growth and development.
  • Children’s naps give caregivers a needed break.
  • Naps are beneficial for people of all ages.

Reading those words made me think about my little guy who was quickly becoming a reluctant napper. On those days that he napped well his mood was better, he was more focused on his play, he went to sleep easier at night, and yes I received a break to get things done (most impressed that the caregiver was included).

Pantley makes it clear that, as the parent/caregiver, you must be aware of the signs that your child is tired.Trying to get a child that is not tired, or even overtired, to nap can be next to impossible. I started keeping notes about troubles we were having at nap time. I wrote whether or not he had slept well the previous night, what time he was up in the morning, and how active he had been before putting him into his crib for a nap. After a while, I started to recognize JSL’s signs that told me he was ready for a nap. He rubbed his eyes, he slowed down, he went to the couch to rest. I learned that that was my key time to get him into his crib. If I waited too long, he would get a second wind of sorts and go into overtired mode.

When I knew it was time and put him into his crib, he would usually settle quickly. The problem soon became staying asleep. He would wake 20-30 minutes into a nap and fuss. Of course I would run into his room to check on him. That was my mistake. While reading the book I found out that the sleep cycles often mean that he would fuss. When I walked in and JSL saw me, he would pop up. If I stayed away and let him self soothe again he would typically nap another hour or more. Lesson learned.

So far many of our nap dilemas with a toddler have been helped with the chapter called The Nap Resister – When Your Child Needs a Nap but Won’t Take One. Whether it was inconsistent nap schedule, looking for tired signs, being too busy, coping with separation anxiety. Pantley suggests items and helps the reader to become in tune with your children. Never do you feel pushed in one direction or another because she always notes that each child and family is different.

I believe that we are well on our way to helping JSL to become a better toddler napper. Thanks to The No-Cry Nap Solution, I have a fabulous resource available when a new nap time situation rises. I highly recommend this book for new parents and those that have children who are also resistant nappers. The book is available on Amazon.com for $10.85 with free shipping and would make a great baby shower gift. I know that when we get back from our vacation I will begin reading The No-Cry Potty Training Solution also by Elizabeth Pantley.
