Creative fun time with Crayola – Holiday Gift Giveaway

Numerous times in the past, I have admitted to being a Crayola snob. As a teacher, I would specify that students should buy Crayola crayons, markers, and colored pencils. To me, it was worth the extra money up front if they lasted longer, worked better and were high quality. This Mommy also has lots of Crayola products at home for the boys.

When I was asked by MyBlogSpark and Crayola to test out some of their new items for the Crayola Holiday Gifts Spark, I jumped at the chance. One day, we came home to a rather large package sitting on our front steps. When we went inside, it was like an early Chanukah for the boys. Here are NHL (6) and JSL (2) with their new Crayola items.

The boys were in heaven

Crayola Beginnings Color Me A Song:

Color Me A Song

The Crayola Beginnings Color Me A Song lets little ones draw to the beat of their own drum, trumpet, piano or guitar. This portable drawing and music creation station features a pressure-sensitive board that matches a melody to the artist’s pace. Draw fast, and the tempo picks up. Slow down, and so does the music. Four instrument buttons let kids pick their favorite sound. Color Me a Song was named a “Toy of the Year” by FamilyFun magazine and one of American Baby magazine’s picks for “Best Toys of the Year.” For children 24 months and up; suggested retail price is $24.99.

As soon as my 2 year old son, JSL, saw the package he knew that this was for him. He refused to eat lunch and wanted to get into his seat to test out his new "Doodle" as he called it.

Coloring and making music

The little guy quickly figured out that pushing the crayons across the top altered the way the music was playing. He liked going in and out of the little drawer to put his "colors" away and get new ones. Here is the little playing. Note that he is so involved he will not reply to me.

What I liked as a parent was that everything was self contained within the unit for quick clean up. We could easily put new crayons inside, paper clipped onto the outside and we were good to go. Another nice touch were the triangular washable crayons that were included. These are fabulous for little fingers that are learning to properly grasp crayons and other writing utensils.

Crayola Glow Station:

Glow Station

The Crayola Glow Station illuminates children’s imaginations through the magic of drawing with light on a large-size glow-in-the-dark canvas. Using a light wand, children can either draw freehand or use stencils and texture sheets to create more realistic drawings. A diamond-shaped tip can be snapped on the end of the light wand for stamping unique starburst designs on the canvas. Drawings magically disappear over time, or can be “erased” by turning on the lights, so kids can create again and again for limitless fun. For children ages six and up; suggested retail price is $29.99.

NHL (6) was very excited to try this toy out. He is fascinated with items that glow. It was still daylight when he tried this for the first time. Even in the day, NHL was able to experiment quite a bit.

Time for more glow action

NHL  liked using the stencils that came with it, the pen to make stars and just writing/drawing various things.

As a parent, I liked that there is a large space for NHL to be creative on. He can practice his writing, math problems (he’s obsessed with this) and loves the fact that they glow. The Glow Station has knobs on the bottom to hang up the stencils that come with it, so it helps with storage. We hope to find a way to secure the Glow Station on the back of NHL’s bedroom door. This will be fun at night to practice spelling word writing while glowing in the dark room.

Crayola Color Explosion Glow Dome:

Glow Dome

The Crayola Color Explosion Glow Dome is sure to bring wide-eyed wonder to kids’ faces when the lights go out and they watch their artwork glow and spin on a moving, two-layered dome of light. Kids control the “glow-motion” fun and can dial up slow, medium or warp speed to create a wild, animated scene. For ages six and up; suggested retail price is $29.99.

NHL was really nice, he shared the Color Explosion Glow Dome with me. While he was off using something else, I set this up. I decided to draw an underwater picture and then called the boys over to see what I had created. When NHL arrived he asked to add some items onto the dome. He put some things on and we turned it on to see how it worked together. Here it is in the daylight:

Later on at night, I wanted to check it out with darker conditions. Here is a clip to see the difference:

This is a great creative toy. Lots of fun and endless possibilities. My only concern is buying replacement markers to use with it. I still have to research that a little more since I am not sure if we can use other Crayola markers or not. NHL and I both liked using this together and I can even see JSL joining the fun.

If you head to any store these Crayola holiday gifts and many others are lining the shelves at retailers. Crayola is also running a Give the Gift of Creativity Sweepstakes, where you can enter to win a 7-night Caribbean cruise fr a family of 4 on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas. Kellogg’s Apple Jacks and Froot Loops plus Fiber

Growing up, I do not think I ever heard the word fiber. I can not say the same for my six year old son. He is very aware of foods that are high in fiber and why we eat them. Does that mean that he gets enough in his diet? No, he probably does not get enough fiber in his diet. TechyDad and I work very hard to try to offer the boys healthy food options that are rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber.

I recently was asked by Mom Central and Kellogg’s to try the new Apple Jacks and Froot Loops with fiber. I agreed to do this with my family since it was something that intrigued me as a parent. We were sent two boxes of the Apple Jacks with fiber and an original box of Froot Loops to taste test with the new Froot Loops with Fiber.

What we were sent

More about Kellogg’s Apple Jack and Froot Loops with fiber from Kellogg’s:

Kellogg’s® Froot Loops® and Apple Jacks® cereals are making fiber fun!

Sometimes it isn’t easy to keep your kids healthy with foods they love to eat. Fiber usually isn’t something that’s a part of a "fun" meal and studies have shown that 9 out of 10 kids don’t get enough fiber in their diets.

Now there’s a cereal that your kids already know and love that also provides 3 grams of fiber in every serving-Kellogg’s® Froot Loops® and Apple Jacks® cereals. So, when your kids are eating the fun breakfast they love, they’re also getting the added benefit of a little fiber in every bite. It’s just the way kids like it!

Fiber is a great way to keep your kids healthy.

Fiber is part of a healthy diet for all kids. It helps aid the digestive system and helps nutrients to be absorbed to turn food into the energy your kids need, keeping them going throughout the day. And starting kids out right with healthful eating habits, like including fiber in their daily diets, is a great practice that’s likely to continue into the future.

Kellogg’s® Froot Loops® and Kellogg’s® Apple Jacks® cereals now provide fiber. Kellogg’s Makes Fiber Fun™.

For more information about the benefits of adding fiber to your kids’ diet, visit kelloggsnutrition.com

Our thoughts:

When the boys saw the package arrive with the bright and colorful boxes of cereal, they were excited. First, we tried the Apple Jacks with Fiber.

Trying Apple Jacks with more fiber

NHL (6) enjoyed them and was able to convince JSL (2) to try a bowl along with him. Both of them gobbled up their cereal and asked to open the Froot Loops next. We had to explain that we were going to do a taste test with those boxes over the weekend. Additional Apple Jacks was poured into the bowls and the boys were happy. TechyDad and I also enjoyed the cereal. It was more of a sweet treat for us, but we liked that it included additional fiber that is crucial for all of us.

Last weekend, we did our Froot Loops taste testing. TechyDad poured bowls and asked NHL, JSL and I to try some of the cereal from each. We wanted to see if we could tell a difference in taste or if we liked one over the other.

  • NHL thought the tastes were pretty similar. In the end, he said he liked one a little more than the other. Which one did he select? It was the Froot Loops with fiber!
  • JSL liked both of them and being 2 really only wanted one thing – more!
  • TechyDad and I both thought that they were almost exactly the same. When pressed, we both liked one a little more than the other. One had a texture that we liked a bit more and was not quite as sweet (we’re adults – sad isn’t it?!). Like NHL, we liked the Froot Loops with fiber more.

Here is a close up photo of both of the Froot Loops mixed together.

Up close look at Froot Loops

Be sure to look for Apple Jacks and Froot Loops with fiber in a store near you.

Pop-a-prune – Review and Giveaway

My boys are not the best when it comes to eating. My oldest son (6) is better than my little guy (2), but that is not saying a lot. Trying to get them to eat healthy, nutritious food is always a challenge. The little guy loves to eat cheese and could live off of it, but to be blunt it constipates him. There is nothing worse than hearing your little guy say he hurts to do his business. We push fiber rich foods into all of our diets with a lot of options.

NHL (6) really likes most dried fruit, but JSL (2) has resisted it in the past. When I was contacted by Family Review Network to try Sunsweet Ones, I jumped at the chance to try something that my little guy may actually eat.

Sunsweet Ones

Sunsweet has teamed up with Cheryl Forberg, the registered dietitian and nutritionist from NBC’s "The Biggest Loser" to create the following video on what a Super Fruit is and why prunes fit into this classification.

Additional information about prunes can be found at Pop-a-prune.

Our Review:

JSL was immediately drawn to the package of Sunsweet Ones. Both of the boys hovered around me asking to try what was inside. Who was I to deny them a prune if they wanted to try it?! They each quickly gobbled up their prune and asked for another. I did a double take because this had never happened before when we tried prunes.

The little guy actually grabbed the container and tried to run off with them. He seriously told me that they were his. The word MINE was used frequently.

Stay away from MY prunes

Before I gave him a second prune, I grabbed my camera to capture the moment. I wanted to be able to show this to him one day in case he ever refuses to eat them again!

The best part was the next day mid-morning. JSL grabbed my hand and led me into the kitchen. He pointed to the Sunsweet Ones container and asked me for a prune. I was floored and quickly gave him another snack. My little Cookie Monster was turning into a prune fan.

Prune snack time

I think his smile and request says a lot, especially when you consider he is a fussy eater. On the flip side, I love prunes and have since I was a child. One of my main problems with prunes was eating through a container fast enough or they would get hard and lose the plumb, juicy goodness. The other part I disliked was putting my hand into the container and coming out all sticky. Sunsweet Ones does away with both of these issues. The prunes are individually wrapped so they stay fresh and your hands stay clean (unless you are a messy 2 year old).

We will definitely be buying more of these in the future because they are healthy, delicious and best of all everyone enjoyed them.

 Giveaway:

Thanks to Sunsweet Ones five (5) winners will receive a Sunsweet reusable shopping bag and a Sunsweet VIP Coupon, which is good for ANY Sunsweet product up to $5.50 in value

Buy General Mills cereal and go to movies – Giveaway

Since I had my oldest son, over six years ago, I can count the number of times I have seen a movie in the theater on one hand. Sad to say, but very true. At first it was trying to find time to go with a newborn, then it was what to see with a child and quickly after that can we afford to go with the skyrocketing price of admission?

Imagine buying some of your favorite cereals and being able to submit codes to get free tickets to see a movie. The great news is that this is a reality. There is a current promotion from General Mills called e-movie cash.

General Mills e-movie cash promotion

When I was contacted about this promotion, it was news to me. We buy a lot of the participating cereal, but I had not seen the boxes in our stores yet. I was sent a "Movie Moment" prize pack that included 4 e-movie cash certificates ($12 each) and one free coupon for a free General Mills Cereal.

As soon as our tickets arrived, my husband and I started to think. Should we see what family movies are coming out and try to take both of the boys? Or, should we do two date nights to the movies for the two of us? We still have not decided, but are working on that now that several new movies that look interesting are coming out.

Details about the e-movie cash promotion:

Starting in November, you can receive a free movie ticket when you purchase two specially marked packages of General Mills’ Cereals. After purchasing two cereals, visit generalmills.com/moviecash to enter the code found inside each box of cereal and print your free movie certificate good for admission to any movie.

Participating brands include select sizes of: Honey Nut Cheerios, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, Trix and Reese’s Peanut Butter Puffs.

To find a participating theater near you, log onto http://emoviecash.com/dis_locator/.

I know that we will be buying more of the participating cereals (love Honey Nut Cheerios and Cinnamon Toast Crunch in our house) and log the code from the specially marked boxes to obtain some additional e-movie cash for our family. At this time every little bit helps, especially when you can use something you already buy to score some nice family entertainment for free.

Softlips PURE & Winter Flavors – Review & Giveaway

I have a confession to make. I am a 30-something adult woman and I do not wear lipstick. Wait, let me clarify that. It isn’t that I do not want to wear lipstick, I can not wear it. Around the time I was in college, I noticed that when I used lip balm, lip stick and most products of that nature that my lips had a horrible reaction. We are not talking a little rash or anything. I mean, my lips would blow up like I had cosmetic surgery on them and would tingle and hurt.

This was a horrible experience. No matter what I did, I could not narrow down the problem to a certain ingredient. I just worked from trial and error. For my wedding day, I had to carefully plan out my makeup. Obviously I wanted to wear some color on my lips. I bought some hypoallergenic lipstick from a major seller in a department store. I tried it a few times and then stopped. From previous experience, if something was going to happen it took a while. I tried the lipstick on a practice run the day before my wedding. The morning of my wedding I had my hair done. My maid of honor helped me do my make up. As I sat there my lips started to tingle. Oy vey!  I was lucky they did not swell much that day, but I was a mess for my honeymoon.

One of the products that I have been able to use to protect my lips and keep them soft is Softlips brand. I once left a comment about how I loved that their line was one of the only  lip products that did not cause an issue for me. Much to my surprise, I was contacted by the PR agency that works with Softlips. They asked me to review their PURE 2009 products, along with their Limited Edition Winter Flavors. Of course, I said yes!

My Thoughts:

As I mentioned at the start, I was already buying Softlips on my own to use before this review. This opportunity allowed me to try their new PURE and Limited Edition Winter flavors.

Softlips Limited Edition Winter Flavors – I love the fact that the winter line includes the SPF protection, every little bit helps to protect my lips. The pairing of flavors in the dual packs are wonderful. The winter flavors really do work well together and allow you to test out one of the limited edition options along with one from the regular Softlips line. The scents are not overpowering, but make you think about the sweet aromas from the holiday season. My favorites were the Winter Mint and Sugar Cookie. There is just something very comforting about the Sugar Cookie flavor that reminds me of baking delicious cookies.

Softlips PURE flavors – As a person that is working hard to recycle, use more Earth friendly products and watch the products that I use with my children I love that this line is all natural and organic. The range of flavors available are amazing. Honeydew made me long for the summer and the delicious summer fruit, pomegranate of the fall harvest, and papaya of the tropical Hawaiian paradise. At the same time I was very intrigued by the acai berry and chai tea which were quite different than anything else I had ever tried. The peppermint was refreshing and had a little tingle that went with it, but not in a bad way.

I was a fan of Softlips before this review and will continue to be. I love that they are expanding their horizons, not only with new and exciting flavors, but also with more green products. Next up for me, I want to try their tinted lip conditioners. A little color on my lips would not be a bad thing, especially when I go out to something special.
