Making things sweet with Splenda

Making things healthier for our family is a major goal in our house.  We do not bake sweets too often because of extra sugar in these items. In addition to this, my mother and TechyDad’s mother are diabetic. We try to watch things because we know diabetes is in our genes. I was recently asked by Mom Central to participate in a Splenda tour to receive a free sample of Granulated Splenda No Calorie Sweetner and the Splenda Tastebook. I agreed since it was a fabulous opporunity to have some recipes to try with my family and friends that are diabetic and/or trying to watch their sugar intake.

We had Splenda packets in the house before this, but had never really used it for anything beyond adding to drinks. Splenda recently teamed up with celebrity Mom chef, Katie Brown, to offer recipes and tips on how to use Splenda in more items than you can imagine. Brown offers recipes for cookies, cakes, breaks and even smoothies.

Our sample and cook book arrived just before Passover . We wanted to try something quick and easy that did not require baking. TechyDad mentioned that we had a lot of overly ripe bananas. I opened up the Splenda Tastebook and found the Banana Strawberry Shake. It was the perfect fit since we had strawberries in the freezer. Bananas, strawberries, Splenda and fat free milk was all we needed with our handy dandy blender.

Testing out Splenda recipe

If you are interested in the recipe you can find it here. One item that I especially liked was the nutritional information was included – big kuddos for that! As you an see below, both of my boys loved it. My little guy actually drank a lot and told us he now likes strawberries. We liked it SO much that TechyDad and the boys actually made three batches of this for the entire family for a snack. It was delicious!

Taste testers approve

When Passover is over, there are a bunch of other items that look really good including the Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bars. I will also be looking at other items to add to my online cookbook to make for my son’s party to bring special for the diabetic members of the family present. I know I have a lot of options with the online recipes and ones in my Tastebook thanks to Katie Brown who included not only drinks, desserts, but also side dishes, sauces, salads and salsas.

Have you used Splenda in any recipes that you liked? Please share, I would love to know.

Human Nature – Reach Out (Review/Giveaway)

In February, NHL’s school had a tribute to Michael Jackson for Black History Month. For months, the kids practiced songs by The King of Pop. On the day of the event, it was amazing watching the kids sing, dance and enjoy what they had learned with those of us in the audience. Thanks to this, NHL (6) has an appreciation for another genre of music. He has actually asked to hear more of Jackson’s songs and I will oblige since it is the music I grew up with.

When I was asked to review Reach Out by Human Nature, I jumped at the opportunity. It looked like something my family would like and would continue to let my boys get associated with Motown classics.

Human Nature Reach Out

Our thoughts about Reach Out:

I decided to take the CD into the car when we went for a ride the other day. That meant I had a captive audience with the two boys (6 and 2) and hubby. We popped it in and started. I will not lie, JSL (2) protested. He did not want to listen and was demanding to hear Wiggles. His little demands and mini-tantrum were not given into. We were going to listen to Human Nature and not the usual Aussie kids music. NHL (6) asked about the songs. He wanted to know what they were. We told him they were a group from Australia singing Motown music that is very popular in the United States. He was cooperative and willing to listen.

Of course, NHL was a fan of the CD the minute he heard what track #9 was. That would be ABC and was one of the Michael Jackson songs that he performed at his school assembly. My kiddo shocked people at Disney when he belted out each and every word of this song at a party that we attended. Sure enough, when the song came on in the car he was singing and dancing in his seat. He loved it and kept asking to hear it over and over again. As I sit here and type this up now, my little guy is begging to hear ABC over and over – so we have another kiddo that is enamored with this song.

Not to worry, we did not simply listen to ABC over and over. We only did that 4-5 times that afternoon! We continued on with the entire CD. TechyDad and I noted that the songs are reminiscent of the classic Motown feel, but updated some. Several of the songs have tempos that are a bit faster and beats that are a little more bold. We both enjoyed it a lot. Even NHL wanted to explore some of the other songs and will dance along with them when we play the CD in the house.

I really enjoyed Reach Out by Human Nature and will be on the look out for more music from this bright and shining group from Down Under.

Let’s face it, there are countless soaps and body washes that are marketed for women. Meanwhile, men are often  forced to use generic products or the ones that their wife/girlfriend/significant other purchase. Dove has now put out a product line to help men and their unique skin needs. When I was asked by Family Review Network to see if my husband would try and review the Dove Men + Care products, he agreed. If you watched the Super Bowl you may remember this hilarious commercial for the product:

Men even blame their socks for their skin irritation when it is really the drying effect of regular cleansers!

Total Skin Comfort

Dove developed MEN+CARE so men can literally be comfortable in their skin. Built on the Dove brand’s heritage in cleansing, moisturizing and care, the new MEN+CARE products offer great cleansing combined with Dove moisturizers to provide total skin comfort. Dove MEN+CARE is dermatologist recommended and clinically proven to fight skin dryness without irritation or tightness.

To help and get the word out about the new line of Dove products for men, Dove is having a contest. You could win the man in your life a manly backyard makeover. All you have to do is share your story of that unsung moment when you knew your man was comfortable with his own skin. To learn more about the contest head here for details.

Thoughts from TechyDad:

Body Wash – I’ll admit, I was hesitant with this.  As a general rule, I hate body washes.  They tend to leave a residue and I feel like they’re not washing off.  The Dove Body Wash, however, seemed to wash off nicely without me feeling like I was still soapy after the suds were washed off.  I like that it didn’t seem to have an overpowering smell too. Since B is sensitive to perfumes, we buy mostly unscented products.Years of doing this has left me noticing whenever a product has a fragrance.  The Dove Body Wash might have a small bit of fragrance to it (tough for me to tell with my nose’s current condition), but it is not overpowering.  I would definitely use this again.

Scrubber – I’ve used "poofs" previously and have liked them.  This scrubber, however, takes the general shower poof concept and adds to it.  On one side is something resembling a "poof" only with more substance to it. Actually, calling it a poof sells it short.  This is no lightweight, it can really scrub your skin.  The other side is a scrubber that… well, scrubs even more.  Dove says it "helps exfoliate for a deeper clean."  I can’t attest to whether any exfoliation occurred (I have no clue how to tell), but my skin did feel cleaner when I used this.
Especially my face that tends to get oily.  (I thought that was supposed to stop when I stopped being a teen!)

Body & Face Bar – When I opened this package, I was preparing myself for a stench of fragrance.  The box smelled of fragrance and so I figured the bar would be heavily scented.  I was pleasantly surprised when the bar’s fragrance was subtle, not overpowering.  I’m not sure why the box smelled so much, but, since I wasn’t going to be lathering up with the box, I didn’t put much thought into it.  This bar did pretty well.  It lathered nicely and washed off clean.

Giveaway:

Thanks to Dove, one lucky reader will win their own bottle of Men + Care Body and Face Wash along with a Body and Face Bar.

Cook’s Ham Giveaway for Easter

CooksLogoSlogan-center

Yes, I am aware of the fact that I do not celebrate Easter. My family is Jewish and we celebrate Passover. Still, I grew up with friends that invited me over to celebrate Easter with them over the years. I have to admit, I was not a fan of ham. There was just something about it that I did not like. When I married TechyDad, he asked that we keep a kosher kitchen. That means no pork products and other non-kosher items in our house. Unlike my husband, I do eat non-kosher items from time to time when we are out and about.

easter plt bckgrnd2

Case in point was when I went to the Cook’s Ham blogger event at Price Chopper a little over a week ago. I did not think I was going to try the ham, but the smell and look intrigued me. Family, please forgive me. It was not the first time and will not be the last that it will pass by my lips! I was pleasantly surprised with the Cook’s Ham. It was nothing like the overly salty, hard to chew hams that I had tried in my life.

I have to admit something else, I am jealous. Ham looks like such a great and versatile protein to use with a family. The recipe possibilities and types of products are huge. Just from Cook’s you can buy: spiral ham, whole ham, half/portion ham, ham streak, and thick cut ham steak. There are a lot of great resources for recipes to use with the ham, as sides and beyond. A ham that was served as a main dinner can later be reinvented and used countless other meals that are fresh and do not seem like leftovers.

Meals with Cook's Ham

The truth is, there is no kosher meat like ham and I wish there was. Here is a ham conversation that I had with my six year old son the other day:

NHL: "Mom, can we have green eggs and ham today?"   (It was St Patrick’s Day)

Me: "I can make you green eggs, but no ham."

NHL: "Why not Mommy?"

Me: "Ham is not kosher, so we can not have it."

Without missing a beat. . . .

NHL: "Do they make kosher ham? If they do I really want it!"

*sigh*  Sad to say that will never happen, but a girl can certainly dream.

With the Easter season quickly coming, Cook’s Ham has a website with recipes and ideas to go along with your ham preparations. You can search for recipes via an ingredient search, or look under Easter ideas, Great tasting Glaze, or Ham Leftovers. The fun part, there are even recipes on their website that I can use because not everything includes ham (delicious sounding desserts and sides included).

Giveaway:

Thanks to Cook’s Ham, TWO lucky readesr will each win a coupon for a Free Cook’s Ham up to $30.00. It may be used on Cook’s Bone-In Hams & Ham Steaks, Cook’s Spiral Slices Hams and Cook’s Corned Beef Brisket. Cook’s Ham can be purchased at Price Chopper Stores or you can check here for a store near you.

Price Chopper hosts a Cook’s Ham blogging event

Long time readers are probably wondering: what is a nice Jewish girl that keeps kosher at home going to a blogging event about Cook’s Ham? Well, this blogger likes to support New York state businesses like Price Chopper grocery stores. This blogger is also trying to avoid Walmart because of something that they support in education that I am 110% against (story for another day).

A short time ago, Price Chopper announced on their Facebook fan page that they were looking for Mommy blogger to come to their first ever blogging event. Hello! Christina from CutestKidever and I quickly signed up and made contact with people from Price Chopper on Facebook and Twitter. I was excited to see what they had in store. Today, we learned that Price Chopper is branching out and trying to do more with social media. They are represented on Twitter, Facebook and reading blogs out there that mention their stores. Thanks to Cook’s ham, they decided to take the plunge and sponsor a Mommy blogging event at one of their stores.

Let me begin by saying that I went into this event with a completely open mind. I had no real idea what to expect. I knew that I would meet new people, learn about Cook’s Ham and hopefully have fun in the process. All of this was accomplished and so much more. As a person that keeps kosher at home, but has eaten and does eat pork products on occasion I did not think that I liked ham. I was not sure if I was going to try something – in the end I did (sorry to my relatives, but you know seafood also calls me when out).

I met Christina outside of the Price Chopper store. When we walked in, we were greeted by Liz and Heidi from Price Chopper. They were so sweet and knew us from Twitter. They could recall several of my Twitpics of items and knew that I had been Passover shopping recently. We also met the two women from Cook’s that would be doing the demonstrations and sampling of their products.

We sat down, looked at everything and then noticed something on the wall. Price Chopper has free Wifi in their food court. . . . sweet! Of course, we did not know this and never thought about bringing our computers to the event. I know I never would have kept up, but Christina is an amazing live blogger (saw it in person at Disney Social Media Moms Celebration last month). Several of us Tweeted during the event. @CutestKidEver and I used #CooksHam to make it easier to follow along. Here is a view of things in the food court area that held the event:

Cook's ham event at Price Chopper

As I sat down with Christina and waited for other bloggers to arrive, I looked at the agenda for the Cook’s Ham Blogger Conference.

Introduction and Welcome

Meal Preparation Workshop

  • Spiral Sliced Ham
    • Ham carving demo
    • Recipe demo and tasting
  • Looking forward to Leftovers
    • Ham 3-ways

Grilling Ham Steaks

Group Discussion

Adjourn

Faith from Cook’s Ham introduced herself and explained about their products. Next, all of the people from Price Chopper were introduced. I even met the person in charge of buying all meat for the stores, including Kosher items – score! Kim and I chatted a lot about things during the event. After this, the nine bloggers, including myself, went around and told everyone who we are and why we started blogging. It was nice seeing many people that I had met online. From here, Faith started the demonstration on how to carve a spiral ham:

Cook's ham demonstrations

As someone who has never cooked a ham, and probably never will, I learned a lot. I did not know that you had to cut around the bone and slice it. I also learned that a lot of people have a hard time knowing how long to cook a ham. Eventually it was taste testing time. Here are some of the items that were given out to try:

Lots of options using Cook's ham

From top right down to top left and down:

  • Slice of the Cook’s spiral ham
  • Piece of ham steak
  • Pasta salad with ham pieces in it
  • Panini sandwich with ham, cheese , olives and roasted red peppers
  • "Ham Tacos" – Crescent rolls with dijon mustard, ham, provolone cheese, and apple

Before we knew it, they were giving everyone a challenge of our own. The mission of sorts was to shop in the Price Chopper store and spend under $100 to supplement a ham to plan a list of meals. These included brunch/dinner, school lunch, after school activity, pot luck dinner, family game night and breakfast. Being the non-ham eater in the group, I opted to be paparazzi and follow Christina around to take photos as she planned her menu on the run.

Shopping on the fly

The challengers were going to be awarded in three areas (1) Most Value (2) Most Creative and (3) Easiest Meals   When the time was up, everyone went back to the food court area to present their meals. Let me tell you, I heard some amazing ideas. I especially loved the ones that really thought about kids and families and how they would be eating the items. There were items that I know I can switch up and even make in our kosher kitchen. I would love to link up to other bloggers at the event. If you were there, PLEASE leave me a note and I will add in a mention for you. Here are some photos of my fellow bloggers enjoying the afternoon event:

Mommy bloggers at work

When we were wrapping things up, Maureen Murphy from Price Chopper came to let us know about new projects that Price Chopper is working on. I know that we will be signing up NHL for the Kids Cooking Club with Jodie Fitz. This program launched in September 2009 joins the Fuel AdvantEdge and Tools for Schools that are very popular in areas with Price Chopper stores. Price Chopper will also be launching tips very soon about healthy Easter basket options for kids and more fun cooking projects to do with your family.

Before I knew it, the three hours was up and it was time to head home. Here is my shopping cart as I left Price Chopper.

Time to go home

I know I look forward to many more events at Price Chopper! More items to share soon and a giveaway associated with the event as well.
