Stolen Words, Photos, and the NickMom Fiasco

Children learn early that is is not acceptable to steal written words from other people. Of course, that does not mean that everyone follows these copyright laws. As a teacher, I had ways to check to see if my students were plagiarizing their book reports, essays, and other items. It’s sad to say that tools exist for teachers. This was probably part of the reason why I made book reports into projects that were more creative and outside of the box. They were more fun to correct and share. Plus, they were harder to copy from a source.

As a parent, I have had to explain to my nine year old that when he needs a photos for a project we have to go to sources that are acceptable. Simply using Google images to hunt something down is not allowed. This is something that many schools are starting to explain to students, but with budget cuts many technology education curriculums are being slashed. This often means internet usage and copyright laws are not being covered properly. We need to make sure that our children are following these.

Copyright and DMCA

Now, you would think that grown adults would know better than to copy something that was not their work. This is not the case. Several months ago, I had a content scrapper pull an entire blog post about my anniversary. Every word, photo, link, and item was pasted onto their for-profit website. No permission was asked, it was simply taken. I caught it because of a ping-back on a link within my stolen post. I submitted a comment requesting the item be removed immediately and mentioned DMCA laws. After a week of nothing being removed and noting more and more stolen item on their website, TechyDad stepped into use his webmaster ways. Since they were pointing to MY photos hosted on my server, we replaced their call to them with this:

TheAngelForever DMCA notice

This remained on their website for a few days, then the website vanished. Of course, not all content thieves leave a trail. Case in point – the NickMom website (that I refuse to direct you to). If you have not heard about their massive blunder, you must head over to read Amy Lupold Bair’s post where she introduced the blogging community about the tactics of NickMom. Kelby Carr, Type-A Mom, continues to update her post about how NickMom is sliming parent bloggers. More and more bloggers have written about how to protect your photos after they realized their items were stolen. The reality is that NickMom continues to publish content that is not theirs and will not remove it unless the owner notifies them. I love the way Emily, ColoradoMoms, puts it. The picture of her adorable son and the caption are spot on. Nichole Smith, The Guilty Parent, compares this tactic to stranger danger. These wonderful women, and so many others, have now written about this topic, but one post really hit home. It was from Sarah, Nerdy Apple, on why she left NickMom. As someone who once left a writing job because I was worried about my reputation, I applaud Sarah for standing up and protecting herself. As a community, we must unite to protect each other and stop people from thinking that it is acceptable to take content without permission.

So my question to you this week:

Had you heard about the NickMom drama and have you ever had someone take your writing, photos, or other work without your permission? Would love to know your take on this ever growing issue in the blogging world.

My Own Little Doc McStuffins the Pirate

Happy New Year and greetings to an illness after going back to school. Poor JSL has been battling something since he went to the ENT and started ear drops. Bit by bit things intensified as the holiday weekend came upon us. Monday afternoon, I was sure that he had turned a corner. Here is the kiddo doing his best Doc McStuffins impression:

What I didn’t know at the time was he was not doing well (just thought he was stuffy). About thirty minutes after this video was taken, JSL seemed a little warm. His temperature was elevated, but nothing too serious. Then, shortly after that, TechyDad thought he was really burning up. Sure enough, in about twenty minutes, his temperature went from under 99 to 101 (his normal temperature is 97). With his febrile seizure history, I knew we had to call the doctor. Drama played out getting a medication that was in stock at the pharmacy, but we got it. Thanks to the fever, Rosh Hashanah was spent home taking care of the little guy.

Doc McStuffins toys

JSL was fever free and ready to go back to school on Wednesday. As I pulled out of our driveway, post-nasal drip proved me wrong. I will spare you the details, but let’s just say JSL needed a change of clothing. We walked into school, since I had hoped I could just wipe him down. I was wrong and his teacher noticed how swollen his face was. We went back to the ENT again and now think it was an ear infection that is draining.

My little JSL McStuffins was fascinated with the instruments being used by the doctor to remove wax blocking his ear canal. What was even better was he was having this done while Doc McStuffins was playing on the television in the exam room.

Talk Like a Pirate Day with Jake and the Never Land Pirates

So our Talk Like a Pirate Day Adventures were a little different than I had expected, but in the end JSL had a smile on his way and as of today no ear infection. Bonus, he got some fun new Jake and the Never Land Pirate items later in the day,.

Of course, our doctor’s office got me wondering about things. What does your doctor have to help kids to be “distracted” and assist during an exam or procedure?

New Face of Children’s Vitamins – alternaVites Kids (Giveaway)

Taking vitamins is something that we really try to do every day with the boys (I am bad and often forget mine). My five year old son will often get sick of a type and refuse to chew them based on the flavor, color, or any other reason under the sun. Thank goodness NHL is really flexible about vitamins and likes to try different things. He’s also super at reminding us as well. When we were offered the opportunity to try the new alternaVites for kids, NHL said “Yes please!” right away.

alternaVites for Kids

This new product for children is a quick-melting multivitamin and mineral crystals that contains no sugar, artificial colors, flavors, or sweetners. One packet a day contains 17 essential vitamins and minerals that are formulated for children 4 and up. There are two kid friendly flavors available – strawberry bubblegum and raspberry cotton candy. They are certified kosher parve (perk for us) and do not contain egg, milk, peanut, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, or shellfish.

alternaVites package for kids

The packets are versatile and can be taken by kids a variety of ways. The key that NHL learned quickly, you must gently and carefully sprinkle the melts onto the tongue. You can not pour too quickly, or raspberry cotton candy power will fly around the room (we speak from experience here).

Trying alternaVites Kids

Of course, you can be creative when taking them. For kids that may not like the texture of a powder, they can be mixed into smoothies, yogurt, pudding, or shakes. They can be sprinkled onto strawberries or other fruits. You can even put them onto a spoon for a child to carefully lick off. I think we will be trying this for JSL since he is not a fan of the melting on your tongue method and I would prefer not to use gummies. NHL likes them so far in our trial and if he did not, well they he would not remind me and ask for them.

Rosh Hashanah Art and The Kissing Hand

Dear JSL,

The Kissing Hand project still seems to be working. After your first full week of kindergarten, things seem to be getting better. You still do not want to let go of my hand in the morning. By Friday, you were no longer crying when I left. Now, I just have to hope that will continue after four days off for Rosh Hashanah.

Last Sunday, you had your first official day of Hebrew School. It was a bitter sweet moment for me. You and I always had fun on Sunday mornings when NHL went off. Now it is your turn to join this tradition and learn about our Jewish faith, along with Hebrew.

When it was time to go to class on Sunday, you did not want to let me go. You did not really know anyone in your class. You were in a new location and the teacher was not who we had thought it would be. Still, I reminded you about The Kissing Hand. Then when I saw the aid in the hall later on, I told her to remind you that we had “powered up” when I left and it would help you out. Much to my surprise, this showed up on your Rosh Hashanah project.

Rosh Hashanah art and The Kissing Hand

You did all of the fantastic apple prints, but you asked someone to help you make a kissing hand. In addition to this, they helped to draw little JSL. It was the sweetest thing to see, it make me smile. I truly hope that this will be the start of many amazing and wonderful years ahead of you in school and learning about our faith.

Love,

Mommy

Monopoly Dreaming

Monopoly sure has changed since we were children. The classic board game now comes in a wide variety of themes. I remember celebrating when they released a Disney edition right around the time TechyDad and I got married (we have it stored away). Then, they released the game for sporting teams, cities, states, and locations all over the world. Monopoly has been computerized, made into a Nintendo game, and has a junior version for children. Then, there are newer ones that have been released.

Monopoly Here and Now

NHL is interested Monopoly again – only the not specifically for kids edition. He had played the junior version, but recently was given the Monopoly Here & Now game. It was really interesting to check it out. The familiar old top hat is gone and now you can select more modern items like a laptop computer or a cell phone. These are a few of them below.

Monopoly Here and Now figures

NHL had fun setting things up. I loved looking around the board at the new properties that you can buy. Rather than Reading Railroad, now you can purchase airports like LAX. Of course, I had a favorite that was not even the infamous dark blue “Boardwalk” location, check it out:

Walt Disney World on Monopoly Here and Now

A girl can dream right? Seriously, can you imagine buying Walt Disney World for 2.4 million dollars? If you are wondering, the Boardwalk position is held by Times Square in New York City. Oh and yes, the dollar values are a lot different. Check out the money:

Monopoly Here and Now big money values

This was probably the only part that kept messing me up. I was so used to $500 being my maximum value, not $5,000,000! So the recent Monopoly fun got me thinking for this weeks question:

If you could make up a property to place on your dream Monopoly board, what would it be and why? Oh and for giggles, what figure would you love to be you when you play the game?

It's Me

P.S. Please be sure to enter my current giveaway for books 1-7 of the Bindi Wildlife Adventures.
