Hello, I have a confession. I am a major Miss Piggy fan. Being born at the end of the 1970’s (*GULP*) and growing up in the 80’s, the Muppets were a part of my world. Check out this photo of me with my father. Look carefully to see Kermit and Piggy.
I am on a hunt to find photos of me with my two Miss Piggy dolls that I would take all over the place with me. I know where one of them is now, but not the puppet Piggy. There were also my original Muppet Fan Club buttons, along with others that I collected over the years.
My love for the queen of swine continued over the years. When we head to Disney Hollywood Studios, I always have to stop and take a photo of the powerful pick diva to bring home.
While shopping, something caught my eye in Target. Yes, they had Muppet pajamas. Normally I am not really into pink, but there was something special about these.
The pink and green with Kermie and Piggy reminded me of my childhood room colors. TechyDad told me to get them for keeping warm this winter. Now, I am waiting to head to the movies with the boys over Thanksgiving to see this:
Will you be going to see the new Muppets movie coming out on Thanksgiving?
There is just something special about the Muppets and reliving your childhood memories and laughter with your children.
Disclosure: I wrote this post because Miss Piggy told me to. Oh wait, I only wish that was true. I wrote it because I am a huge fan of the Muppets and wanted to share the trailer and some of my history with Miss Piggy from over the decades.
Yesterday, all of the parents in your school went in to chat with teachers to see how the kids are doing. All of your teachers are really great and talk with me in the morning and afternoon, so I knew a lot of what has been going on. Before we started, they pointed out the bulletin board that all of the kids in your main class had made.
Then, they asked me to pick out which was you on the board. They explained that they gave you mirrors and photos to do self portraits. I guessed a few times, then noticed the wrong names. I was stumped. Your teachers, E and L, mentioned that they tried to remind you that you are blonde. See, here you are with your still very light locks doing some writing practice at school.
As you can see, I was a little confused when I finally figured out which face was yours. Yes, you went with simple and different. My guess is that you didn’t like the idea of blonde being yellow yarn. This is your first self portrait according to you:
The rest of our meeting went really well. You love school, are adjusting well, and are growing up before our eyes. I was so proud when E and L told me about something you were able to do that others could not. You are such a smart little cookie and we are going to continue to work with you on writing and working toward reading.
Love you my little kiddo,
Mommy

Over the weekend, I was away with my parents for a family bridal shower. Before we came home, we stopped at a local store to get some items to bring back home for the boys. As I passed down an aisle with sweet goodies, something caught my eye. This is what I saw:
So many sweet memories of having Charms and Original Charms lollipops (not the ones w/bubble gum in the middle). When in Hawaii and stuck on a road thanks to lava flow, the Charms in my purse helped my mother as her sugar dropped dangerously low. When I saw these, I had to get them to bring home for the boys –er for all of us.
So my question to you this week:
What sweet or other treat from your childhood would you love to find to share with your family now?
Thanks to Kailani at An Island Life for starting this fun for Friday. Please be sure to head over to her blog to say hello and sign the linky there if you are participating.
In 1980, the world changed for my family. Not only was it the time that my mother was pregnant with my little brother, it was also when she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. For most women, the diabetes story ends once they deliver their baby. Yes, they are more at risk for developing adult onset later on, but it is something they just monitor. My mother was not as lucky. Her sugar remained high. She was put on a low dose pill and for years and years it kept everything in check.
Many years later, my mother’s sugar spiraled out of control. She started to see an endocrinologist and was put on insulin, told to monitor her blood levels multiple times a day, and to change her diet. I am happy to report that with diet changes, doctor monitoring, and new advances in medicine, my mother is no longer insulin dependent.
TechyDad and I worry about diabetes. It is a factor that both of us need to think about. You see both of our mothers are diabetic. Watching my mother’s battle with diabetes has inspired us to watch our carbohydrate intake, increase multigrain products, and use different sources of protein in our diets (egg whites, quinoa, tofu, and others). A staple in our house are packages of egg whites. Thanks to a fantastic little steamer, we can make omelets in the microwave using All Whites in less than a minute. We simply pour the number of ounces that we want into the steamer and place it in the microwave. If we want to be fancy, we add in fresh vegetables and/or soy bacon.
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. As a member of Global Influence, I am participating in a sponsored Fit2Fight Campaign from Better’n Eggs to get the word out. As you can see, diabetes is part of my world and we try to make healthier eating choices. Here is a new recipe courtesy of All Whites that I hope to try one day soon that would make a great diabetes friendly option with lots of protein and vegetables.
1. Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 9-inch pie plate with nonstick cooking spray; set aside. 2. Combine rice, green onion and flour in medium bowl. Spread over bottom of pie pan. Top with broccoli, red peppers and mushrooms. 3. In medium bowl stir together Better’n Eggs, milk, salt, hot pepper sauce, basil and pepper. Pour over vegetables. Top with cheese. 4. Bake, uncovered, 50 to 55 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Serve immediately.
To learn more about the Fit2Fight Campaign, please join the #betterneggs Twitter party with Bob Greene on November 16 from 8-10 EST. Yes, Bob Green is Oprah’s personal trainer and health and wellness expert. For more information about the party, head over to Mamavation to get all of the details, including all of the amazing prizes that night.
Remember that diabetes is something that all of us need to think about. By living healthier lifestyles and picking better food options, we will help the battle. The reality is that Type II diabetes is a preventable disease that affects 25.8 million children and adults in the United States. So take a stand and help spread the word.
How has Type II diabetes affected your life? I would love to take the time to share those that we know who have had this disease in their world.
Disclosure: I wrote this post as part of a compensated Global Influence campaign. As someone who has many family members with Type II diabetes, it was my pleasure to share information about this cause with my readers.

It is no secret that I am a certified reading teacher. I may not be in the classroom right now, but I am always thinking about my own children and others. My oldest son craved to learn to read. When asked on the first day of kindergarten what his goal was, he said it was to read alone. In a short amount of time, he did this.
Fast forward to my youngest. JSL is suddenly beyond interested in learning to read and write. When we received a bounty of items to host a Leap Frog – “Learn, Create, & Share” Party, I knew there was something special here. We had a lot of Leap Frog items in the past, but everything in our package was new to us. Since our party, JSL has been focused on writing letters and trying to read on his own. At almost four and a half, I want to run with this literacy development.
There are so many ways to help children to read. The best early literacy learning comes from reading a lot and having others that model this behavior. JSL is lucky and has that with his big brother, TechyDad, and me. We all read a lot of different items and enjoy reading to him. Thanks to the LeapFrog Tag, JSL is now able to read alone.
With the Tag, kids are able to sound out words on the pages of the special books that are for use with the Tag. We were sent the LeapFrog Tag Learn to Read Phonics Book Series Short Vowels. I was very impressed with the content in them. They kept JSL’s interest and he was able to follow along, repeat what was said, and figure out what to do with little assistance. In this video, you will see how JSL can utilize the different features. Let’s ignore the fact that I distracted him, he skipped a page, and liked to repeat words.
In addition to being easy to transport and use, I love the variety of books offered for the LeapFrog Tag. There are a lot of picture book classics, Disney titles, books about super heroes, and more. In addition to this, there are items like the LeapFrog Tag Maps: World. This works with the tag pen and helps children to learn about the world map, cultures, and other items. There are even games to race around the world while homing in on your geography skills.
The Tag Reading system is very versatile and can grow with a child as they learn to read and practice increasing their fluency and comprehension. Not only are these wonderful gift items for a young child, but a set would be a fantastic teacher/classroom gift as well. Imagine the faces of children using these in a kindergarten or preschool classroom to gain confidence and self-esteem while learning to read.
Do you have a Tag Reader? If you do, I would love to know what books you recommend since Chanukah is coming and we will probably be getting some titles for JSL to enjoy.
What have you read recently? Please be sure to link up to your Book Posts, and/or leave a comment below. Include something you read on your own, with a child or someone else. Tuesday Tales are all about spreading the love for books.
Disclosure: As a long time LeapFrog supporter, I applied and was selected by Mom Select and LeapFrog to host a “Learn, Create, & Share” party. They provided me with all of the items shown above. The opinions are all mine and no other compensation was received. More coming soon about the LeapPad and helping kids to learn to write.
