Graduating from Speech Therapy

Early intervention is so important in helping children who require assistance with speech, fine motor, gross motor, or other areas of development. When teaching, I saw how therapists and special education teachers assisted me when working with students that had 504 plans and IEPs. Years later, it would become even more personal as both of my children required different types of therapy.

Last week was a bitter sweet time for us. On Wednesday, JSL graduated from speech.

Speech Therapy Milestone

His journey began just before he turned three years old. I noted that he was frustrated that people, including TechyDad and myself, could not understand what he was saying. There was no exact pattern to his speech. He was dropping sounds at the start of words, in the middle, and even at the end. Hearing was checked and by the time he was three I called our school district because we had been dismissed by Early Intervention. No matter what they said, I knew something was not right and JSL needed assistance from a speech pathologist.

To make a long story short, Carolyn entered our world in September 2009 when JSL started preschool three days a week. She was highly recommended by our school and district. JSL immediately fell in love with his new teacher. She was a familiar face that he trusted. She would start days with him and helped not only with his speech, but to get him acclimated to being away from me.

Carolyn fought for JSL, she knew that he needed more days once she started and quickly filled out paperwork to get him three days of intense therapy each week. At the end of that academic year, we knew that it was time to request summer therapy. Without blinking, our county agreed to continue JSL’s three day a week regimen over most of the summer months.

Thanks to working hard and extremely well together, JSL not only caught up on his speech, but surged ahead. We were lucky enough to slowly decrease his sessions and complete the school year with Carolyn. JSL is going to miss Carolyn and so am I. She knew my kiddo and how to make him work harder than he ever has. She helped JSL to have self confidence, to use his voice, and to sing, dance, and be heard. I will forever be thankful to this amazing woman for being there and making JSL ready to take on kindergarten. I know way back when he started nobody ever thought that he would be declassified before school, but clearly with a determined child and fantastic therapist it can happy.

 Goodbye speech therapy

Thank you to Carolyn and every other professional that works with children day in and day out to get them caught up. Your patience and persistence is something that is ever so special.

Tuesday Tales – The Cookie Dough Lover’s Cookbook

As a little girl, my father introduced me to the joys of cake batter. I enjoyed that, even if we were warned about the danger of raw egg. Then something else came into my world. Cookie dough was even better to me. I loved the taste, the texture, and the flexibility. I was obviously not the only one that enjoyed cookie dough, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and then others added cookie dough to their repertoire and it became an instant hit.

Hello Cookie Dough

One year, for my birthday (before kids), I asked TechyDad for a tub of cookie dough for my cake. Skip the other items, I wanted something that really called my name. Much to my surprise, he did this. It should not be a surprise that I have a Cookie Dough World board on Pinterest.

Pinterest Cookie Dough World

Recently, a lot of my pins were focusing on recipes by Lindsay Landis and her new The Cookie Dough Lover’s Cookbook: Cookies, Cakes, Candies, and More. I have to admit, just looking at the beautiful photos in the book kept me happy and content. One day, TechyDad made a batch of the egg-free raw cookie dough for us to try. It was delicious and I was thrilled. Then, for our anniversary, he bought me the book.

Cookie Dough Love Recipes

I am definitely intrigued with a lot of the recipes. A few that sound fun to try sooner, rather than later are:

  • Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Fudge <—Hello gift making!
  • Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Sandwich Cookie <— Best of both worlds
  • Brown Sugar Cookie Dough Layer Cake
  • Cookie Dough Mosaic Cheesecake
  • Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bread Pudding
  • Malted Cookie Dough Milkshakes
  • Invisible Cookie Dough Ice Pops
  • Cookie Dough Oatmeal Pancakes
  • Cookie Dough-Stuffed French Toast
  • Cookie Dough Crispy Treats
  • Cookie Dough S’Mores

If you love cookie dough, or know someone that does – this is a great gift for them. Lindsay has a great variety of treats that play on old favorites with a splash of cookie dough. Oh and FYI – you can check out other recipes and goodies on her website Love & Olive Oil.

Cookie Dough Dreaming

If you love cookie dough, what would be your dream cookie dough recipe creation? As always, Tuesday Tales are all about spreading the love for books. What have you read recently? Please be sure to link up to your book posts in the comments below. Include something you read on your own, with a child, or someone else.

The Care Bears are Back

As a child that grew up in the 80’s, a lot of the hot toys and shows are back. Let’s take a stroll down memory lane. Imagine a world filled with clouds, rainbows, and cute bears with special symbols on their tummy. Do you know who I am talking about?

Old School Care Bears

These Care Bears were the ones that my mother collected. I had several of the huggable bears, figures that would move, and their Cloudmobile (need to locate those). The grandkids adore playing with the ones that Nana still has. I am often quizzed to recall their names. Some I can recall, but others do escape me.

When I was contacted by Mom Select and MommyParties to host a Care Bears Welcome to Care-a-Lot viewing party for the new Care Bears show on the Hub, I jumped at the opportunity. I have two boys, but it was the chance to share part of my childhood memories with them.

Our original party had to be rescheduled thanks to my little guy going to the ER. Now, we are attempting a redo with friends to share the new series with them. While JSL was not feeling well, we watched an episode that we had on our DVR together. My five year old son really enjoyed it. Check that, we both liked watching the Care Bears come to life in front of our eyes.

I remember watching the old Care Bears show and specials. At the time, they were really decent and we would watch them over and over with friends. The new series has fantastic animation and lessons to learn from. There is even a place to meet them on the official Hub website. I know we will be watching more of the Care Bears as the series has just begun and airs Saturday mornings on the hub at 8 am ET.

Now, it’s time to fess up. Who is your favorite Care Bear? I think I still love my original Cheer Bear (the rainbow tummy up above), but Grumpy in the new series has a lot of spunk.

It's Me

Disclosure: I was selected by MomSelect and Mommy Parties to host a “Care Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot” in home party. We received a DVD screener and media kit featuring stickers, crayons, activity sheets, and party ideas. The opinions are 100% mine and I received no other compensation.

11 Year Wedding Anniversary

Most of the events from eleven years ago today are hard for me to remember. I have a feeling a lot of brides will probably admit that to you because they are so caught up in the moment and making sure everything goes just the way that it was planned.

Our wedding table

The day that I married TechyDad is mostly a blur. So many hours of preparations all came down to one magical day when I became JL’s wife. Our family and friends were all there to help us to begin this part of our lives together.

Heading to the Chuppah

Thank goodness for photos. I can look back and smile and know that it was the day that I married my best friend and the father of our beautiful boys. It was also the time that we would take our first adventure to Walt Disney World, where I would convert TechyDad into a member of the Disney Driven Life.

Family at our wedding

Last year, our tenth anniversary trip had to be canceled thanks to Hurricane Irene. Of course, that was only after the plumbing debacle that caused us to move out of our house on the night of our actual anniversary for several days (fumes were that bad). Luckily, we were able to head back to Disney World in May where we celebrated our next anniversary a little early.

TechyDad and TheAngelForever

Thanks to the Disney PhotoPass photographers for suggesting that we do a few couple only shot. These are items that we will always cherish.

Just TechyDad and TheAngelForever

JL, I love you with all of my heart and am so lucky that we have had these eleven years together. I look forward to many more adventures, magical moments, and memories together.

Michaels Passport to Imagination Surprise

Dear NHL and JSL,

Last summer, we traveled to many different countries. We had craft filled adventures to Canada, Australia, India, Russia, France, Mexico, China, and Brazil. There were other countries, but we just could not make it to all of them and the programs at the library. It was a great time thanks to Michaels and their sponsors. This year, they are doing the same program.

Since it was a half day of school on Thursday, I decided to surprise both of you and take you to the Mexico event. JSL loved making a stingray on Tuesday, so I knew it would be a nice change and break in the heat. When we arrived, the table was set up in the front of the store with the items being made.

Just like last year, the people at our local Michaels store have been so wonderful, helpful, and patient. They quickly showed both of you how to get started making monarch butterfly. Both of you had a great time trying out some new items like the paint pen.

When your monarchs were finished, it was time to make some gecko lizard pins. NHL, I loved how you wanted your gecko to have an extra long tongue. JSL, then you asked to have two different colored eyes on yours.

I know we will reference the passport book for more ideas to create over the summer and to learn about the places that we “travel” to together.

Today is the first official day of your summer vacation. I am sure we will have many more days at Michaels and other locations exploring all that is out there together. Watching your faces and smiles makes this time even more special.

Love,

Mommy
