Disney Style Magical Memories

It really is hard to figure out how to share magical memories from a Walt Disney World vacation. Each one is special in it’s own way. I have memories of going as a child with my parents, on my honeymoon with TechyDad, and now with my boys. Still, one of the most amazing things to experience was our first ever family trip. This was even more special because Nana and Papa were along to see the wonder on the faces of the boys. This week, the Disney Wordless Wednesday theme is “Magical Moments” and I am sharing some from that first trip with the kids in May 2009.

Tuesday Tales – Rosh Hashanah Reading 5773

Rosh Hashanah begins at sunset on September 16, 2012. This is the Jewish New Year when  families around the world gather together to celebrate a sweet New Year. It is also the time that we look back at the year gone by and ask for forgiveness. Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, is the holiest day of the year when the book of life is sealed for another year. Now imagine trying to explain this to younger children. It is not easy, but thank goodness there are now many amazing children’s books out about Rosh Hashanah.

Rosh Hashanah Books for Kids

Thanks to the PJ Library, which provides free kids’ books for Jewish families, we have been introduced to many new books for the holidays. Both of the boys recently received a mailing with a book about Rosh Hashanah.

The Apple Tree's DiscoveryJSL received The Apple Tree’s Discovery. This sweet book is about the life of young apple tree living among a forest of giant oak trees. The apple tree is jealous of something that the other larger trees has that he does not have. We watch as the small trees asks God to give him what the others have. He is told to be patient. Readers watch as the beautiful apple tree learns a valuable lesson one fall day.

This book is a great to talk with younger children about items that they are thankful for, especially at Rosh Hashanah. Remind them that we must remember to be thankful for items that we have and celebrate our differences among the world.

The Apple Tree’s Discovery – Written by Peninnah Schram and Rachayl Eckstein Davis – Illustrated by Wendy W. Lee – Kar-Ben Publishing – January 2012 – ISBN 9780761351320 – Paperback 24 pages – Ages 5-9 – $7.95

Gershon's Monster - A Story for the Jewish New YearNHL received Gershon’s Monster: A Story for the Jewish New Year. This book really has a lot to relay to older children with a picture book format. Gershon is a man who never had a regret about anything that he had done in life. He believed that he could simply sweep away his mistakes and thoughtless acts into his cellar. Then each Rosh Hashanah he would gather them together in a sack to toss them into the sea. Gershon and his wife are childless and he claims that once his twins are born he will change his ways. We watch as years pass and he must face a monster to learn a lesson.

This retelling of a Hasidic Rosh Hashanah tale is beautiful. The simple and old fashioned illustrations make the story even more powerful to older children. They can see the pain on the face of Gershon as he has to finally face all of the years of being reckless. The book also allows for a nice chance to talk with children about what they will do differently in the coming year. Take time to think about challenges faces, growth, and what you are excited to experience in the upcoming year.

Gershon’s Monster: A Story for the Jewish New Year – Retold by Eric A. Kimmel – Illustrated by Jon J. Muth – Published by Scholastic – September 2000 – ISBN 9780439108393 – Paperback 32 pages – Ages 4+

What are your favorite Rosh Hashanah books? As always, please share what you have read recently. Be sure to link up to your book posts in the comments below. Include something you read on your own, with a child, or someone else. Tuesday Tales are all about spreading the love for books.

Fourth Grade and Kindergarten Kids

My house is eerily quiet right now. Both boys started school full time and I have to admit it is strange. We were together all day the entire summer. I got used to the chatter and voices in the house. I actually do better work when there is some background noise around. For now, Pandora Internet Radio and Spotify are my friends.

For five years, I often wondered what it would feel like taking my youngest for his first day of full day kindergarten. I wrote about NHL’s first day years ago, but it seemed less dramatic in my mind. The morning was calm. NHL was excited to see friends and meet the long term substitute that would be in for his teacher. There were no visible nerves, which makes me know we are in the right school now. Then there was JSL. My kindergarten kid was saying his tummy hurt, that he wanted to go back to sleep in my room, and that he was scared. The strings of my heart were starting to tighten.

When we went outside, it was time to do the traditional first day of school photos. The boys cooperated to amuse me.

First Day of School 2012

JSL’s outfit looked vaguely familiar. It really made me wonder why. Since I blogged when NHL started kindergarten, I went back to that post. This is the reason why:

Kindergarten kids 2008 and 2012

I seriously did not plan that, but it’s kind of funny that I liked the same outfit four years later. Anyway, once we got to school JSL was not smiling as much. Thank goodness NHL was ready to go. We walked him to the back of school and he immediately ran over to say hello to the assistant principal. One kiddo happy and off for his first day of fourth grade.

Then, it was time to take the kindergarten kid to his room. When we arrived in the hall, it was a little confusing. JSL did not want to let go of TechyDad. We were eventually told to head into the room to drop off items into their cubby. When we went back outside of the room, JSL sat next to some other children. The photo below was taken just before one of us ended up in tears.

Kindergarten 2012

Yes, JSL started to cry. TechyDad followed him into the classroom as he sobbed. I knew we had to say goodbye and leave. After a bit I walked into the room, nodded to the teacher who was trying to help and told her we would see both of them at the end of the day after he rocked kindergarten.

TechyDad went off to work and when I got to my car my tears started to flow. It hit me that things were going to be different forever. My little guy who had been with me since I left my classroom when he was born was going to school. I knew he was going to be fine, but it still hurt knowing how upset he was.

Thanks to some amazing friends, I was ready with something to greet JSL with after school. This is what was waiting for the little guy when he climbed into my car after his first full day of school.

The Kissing Hand after kindergarten day one

I knew that JSL was familiar with The Kissing Hand and I wanted to let him know that I had forgotten to do this very important item. I did not kiss his hand or have him kiss mine before day one.

We made sure to do this before going to school for day two. There were less tears, but still an emotional morning. I know things will get better. The smile on JSL’s face when he came out and told me kindergarten was stupendous was all that I needed to hear.

So how do you help your children to adjust to a new school, classroom, teacher, or other item that may be stressful for them?

The Day Before School 2012

Labor Day 2012 signifies the end of summer in our area. It is hard to believe that tomorrow both of my boys will be in school. One will be a fourth grader and the other a kindergarten kid. Over the weekend, I pushed passed this and enjoyed the last moments of the summer.

Views like the one below certainly helped to make me forget about a lot of things on my mind.

Saratoga Lake Views

Seeing smiles on the boys faces in the pool, made my worries melt away.

Pool time in Saratoga

It was nice to sit in the sun and watch the kids play, explore, and enjoy the time without a care in the world. Just kicking my feet up out of the sand and watching them enjoy the fun in the sun.

Beach time at Saratoga Lake

Today, we will spend a quiet day at home, enjoying time resting, remembering our special weekend with family, the summer we enjoyed, and gathering supplies for the first day of school.

Family Filled End of Summer 2012

There is something special about being with extended family. It isn’t every weekend that you get to see relatives from near and far. Yet Labor Day weekend seems to becoming more of a traditional time. Not everyone was able to make it to my aunt and uncle’s house at the lake, but still so many were here.

Though I had a headache when we arrived, seeing my boys with my niece and nephew made me smile.

Cousins together again

The kids had an amazing time running, playing, laughing, and being carefree.

Cousins running and playing

They stopped a few times to have lunch and celebrate NHL’s birthday with some Kermit cupcakes.

Then there was time at the pool, lake, and on the boat. Everyone split up to divide and conquer. I missed JSL on the boat, but heard all about how he was able to drive.

Captain of the boat

At the end of the day, my “little” cousins – who now live in other states and Israel – were giving the next generation moments they will never forget. It isn’t every day that you are able to have a parade piggy back style with a phones and cameras capturing every magical moment.

 Fun with big cousins

These are just some of the photos from a small part of the weekend. A weekend with family to relax, rest, and get ready for school. So many memories, so many moments, such an amazing time.
