Finding time to read

Now that the cooler weather is here reading just seem like a better choice to do at night before bed. It is harder to curl up under a blanket to knit items like these that I sent off as part of my bloggy giveaway earlier this month.

Recently made DW cloths

No matter what you do, bamboo knitting needles and heavy blankets just do not mix. Sure, I could bring my laptop into bed and do some blogging. Still the laptop is not easy to maneuver and type with when hidden under a mountain of blankets to keep warm.

There is just something about snuggling up under a blanket and reading a great book at night when the weather is cold. Last week I read Mia King’s novel called Sweet Life. The story starts off in NYC and is about a couple that moves to Hawaii. Sounds wonderful to me now that the daytime high is only going to reach 30 degrees most days. The main character quickly finds that paradise is not an automatic thing, even in Hawaii. Marissa Price (the main character) and her husband struggle with the changes in their life and marriage. With great woman friends supporting her,  Marissa is able to settle into life in paradise and eventually fix items in her personal life as well. I really enjoyed the cast of characters in this novel. King does a fabulous job establishing them quickly into the life of Marissa Price.

Thanks to the bloggy world I heard about this wonderful book from many different people and went to get a copy to read. I enjoyed it so much that I went out to get King’s first novel Good Things. I hope to snuggle up under my blanket tonight to get started on this soon.

What books are you reading right now? I could always use more suggestions for this long winter that is ahead of us. Happy reading!

Mitzvah Day Fall 2008

Have you done a mitzvah today? If you are not sure what this means, do not worry many people are probably curious as well. The term mitzvah, a hebrew word,  has come to mean any act of human kindness. For further information about the historical meaning of mitzvah I will point you here.

People strive to do mitzvot in their everyday lives without making it obvious that they are doing so. Each year our synagogue has a Mitzvah Day in the fall where congragants go out into the community to do good for others. Some of the opportunities were to help out at the Ronald McDonald House, serve food at the local mission, and dance to entertain residents at a senior center.

Beautiful Fall Day

The children from the hebrew school in grades K-3 were asked to participate in the dancing. NHL was very excited about this and wanted to go with his friends. We decided to participate. Everyone was supposed to arrive at our synagogue at 12:30 for lunch. When we arrived we were greeted by my grandmother working at the registration table.

A friendly face at the registration desk

After lunch we drove to the senior center for the dancing. NHL was quite excited and had a hard time waiting to get on the "stage" to dance.

All ready to dance

Here is a shot of him dancing and having a fabulous time. He really is starting to understand the broad picture of what doing a mitzvah is now thanks to hebrew school.

Group dance

Meanwhile JSL was a little antsy. At the end he decided to untie JL’s laces and have some fun.

Getting into trouble

This was a great experience and we look forward to future Mitzvah Days to participate in within the community.

So will you do a mitzvah today?

Motrin Makes Mommy Mistake

Have you heard about the new Motrin campaign that was recently launched?  Yesterday I found  out about it thanks to a huge uproar on Twitter (#motrinmoms). Clearly the advertising department did not think about the consumers that they would be outraging. Nobody messes with the mommies of the world that proudly wear their children. None of us that have ever worn our child does it for a fashion statement.

Assuming the campaign has not been pulled when you read this, the video is on Motrin’s website. Just in case it is pulled, this is come of what the fast talking woman says during the promotion for Motrin:

Wearing your baby seems to be in fashion.

I mean in theory it’s a great idea.

And who knows what else they’ve come up with. Wear your baby on your side, your front, go hands free.

Supposedly, it’s a real bonding experience.

They say that babies carried close to the bod tend to cry less than others.

But what about me? Do moms that wear their babies cry more than those who don’t?

I sure do!

These things put a ton of strain on your back, your neck, your shoulders. Did I mention your back?!

I mean, I’ll put up with the pain because it’s a good kind of pain; it’s for my kid.

Plus, it totally makes me look like an official mom. . . .

Last night a lot of bloggers started their campaign to boycott Motrin for not using their heads and doing research with the Moms that wear their children. Had they done just this little bit extra they may have been able to avoid the headache they will be feeling come Monday morning.

Here are two of the amazing blog posts that I have seen in my travels:

Katja was also the one that asked her followers on Twitter to comment on what they felt about the new Motrin campaign and use the #motrinmoms on Twitter to allow everyone to follow along. She was asking for feedback to make a video message to Motrin. She has been wonderful enough to put her hard work on YouTube so we can all share this. Please look at the comments Katja received in such a short amount of time yesterday evening.

Update: Katja has also set up a Mr. Linky with other Motrin blog posts here on her Skimbaco Lifestyle blog.

Look into my eyes

As a former teacher, I know it is never good when the school nurse has to send home a letter to parents. Thursday afternoon we received our first one home this year with the kindergarten kid. The note that NHL had in his backpack was telling parents that the room had a large number of cases of pinkeye. I called the nurse to ask about it. I was concerned since NHL had pinkeye less than a month ago and it was what started the illness that ended up with JSL in the hospital for four days in February. According to the nurse, several kids had come to school only to be sent home with it, and others were coming in with antibiotics on their own.

Care to guess what happened to me when I woke up Friday morning?

Sure enough when I tried to open my right eye is was all crusted over and did not want to open. Ugh! I wanted to wait and see what was going to happen. Since the weekend was coming and I did not want to get stuck going to Urgent Care, I called our doctors office. I left a message that I had been helping in my son’s kindergarten class where an outbreak of pinkeye was going on and I had it.

I stayed in waiting for the call all Friday morning and early afternoon. Sure enough they called 10 minutes after I left to get NHL from school. They called in a tube of ointment for me (not thrilled about it, but it is better than nothing). I opted not to pick it up yesterday just in case I was rushing into this. Here is my eye as it looked earlier this morning.

Nasty eye

After a nap this morning with JSL I got dressed and went to the pharmacy for my ointment, clearly it was time. For some reason I am quite susceptable to pinkeye, no matter how careful I am washing my hands. Hopefully I can keep this to myself like NHL did a few weeks back.

Remember, you can not catch pinkeye from just looking at this photo!
