Lullaby Renditions of Journey

It’s no secret that many babies, older children and even adults like to fall asleep listening to music. My oldest son, NHL, has gotten used to this. Music in his room at night helps to relax him and get him to sleep faster. TechyDad and I have no problem with this. The only issue that we had was the same CD getting "old" after 365+ playings.

rockabye baby logo

Several months ago, this stale bedtime music routine changed. I was contacted by Rockabye Baby! to do a review of a few of their lullaby rendition CD. At that time, I had reviewed lullyby renditions of Guns n’ Roses along with lullby renditions of Aerosmith. To read more about those CDs and our thoughts head over to my review.

NHL has a great appreciation for music. He loved listening to new artists and enjoys singing along. When Rockabye Baby! contacted me again about their lullby renditions of Journey that was released in February, I immediately agreed. This was a nice chance to introduce both of our boys to another popular music icon in a unique way.

Lullaby Renditions of Journey

More about Rockabye Baby! lullaby renditions of Journey:

( Los Angeles ) "Who’s Crying Now?" If those sobs are coming from the nursery, help is on the way when Rockabye Baby releases its latest album of rock songs turned into gentle instrumentals on February 9.

Lullaby Renditions of Journey features 12 songs from the classic group that has sold over 75 million albums worldwide. Thanks to the sweet and tender sounds of glockenspiel, vibraphone, Mellotron, harps and bells, tunes from the group with 18 Top 40 singles and six Top 10 hits extend "Open Arms" to infants. It¹s not "Only the Young" who enjoy Rockabye Baby albums. Parents who "Faithfully" follow the music of Journey will savor this album as it helps them to share the songs of their favorite band with the next generation. Moms and Dads who are "Stone In Love" with their little cradle rockers will also love lullabies that help ease their babies to sleep at naptime or bedtime with timeless tunes like "Don’t Stop Believin" the top selling catalog track on iTunes.

Rockabye Baby has fostered an ongoing revolution in children’s music by creating albums adults enjoy as much as children. Rockabye Baby’s CDs have become the must-have baby shower gift, while rocker parents and grandparents such as Sheryl Crow, Kirk Hammet of Metallica and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith have sung their praises.

The rock lullaby line has been heralded in the media and won top parenting product awards with its albums of songs by The Beatles, Queen, Bob Marley, U2, Led Zeppelin, Coldplay, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Green Day, The Ramones, Metallica, Radiohead, AC/DC, The Cure, and many more.

The label’s most recent release, Lullaby Renditions of Guns N’ Roses was named one of the 10 Best Books and CD Gifts for Kids in Entertainment Weekly¹s recent 2009 holiday gift guide, and the Aerosmith lullaby CD issued last September included liner notes by the band’s lead singer Steven Tyler.

The Rockabye Baby blog is updated daily with info about the coolest products and music for babies, coloring pages, rock star facts, recipes and much more to serve as a vital resource for parents. Fans of the albums can vote for the artists whose music they want to hear in future releases.

What we thought:

Once again, the boys were quite anxious to try the new CD that we received. They both wanted to know the names of the songs as they played. They were also quite curious to see what would come next on the track list. NHL took the CD cover and read off as each song played. Like with the other Rockabye Baby! music that we have, it was nice to use not only when the boys go to sleep, but also for quiet play time.

As I listened to the CD, memories came to me from hearing these songs during my lifetime. It was nice listening to my boys react to the songs. NHL would ask me questions about them. Thanks to the Rockabye Baby! lullaby renditions of Journey, NHL has asked to hear the original Journey songs and we have done this so he can see the difference. My favorite songs on the CD are Open Arms, Don’t Stop Believin’, and Any Way You Want It. The songs on this CD are calming, soothing and perfect for background music when reading, having quiet play or trying to soothe a child to sleep.

I know that the next baby shower I go to, part of the gift will be a Rockabye Baby! CD with the songs of the parents favorite artist. With the wide variety now available, there will likely be several to pick from.

Human Nature – Reach Out (Review/Giveaway)

In February, NHL’s school had a tribute to Michael Jackson for Black History Month. For months, the kids practiced songs by The King of Pop. On the day of the event, it was amazing watching the kids sing, dance and enjoy what they had learned with those of us in the audience. Thanks to this, NHL (6) has an appreciation for another genre of music. He has actually asked to hear more of Jackson’s songs and I will oblige since it is the music I grew up with.

When I was asked to review Reach Out by Human Nature, I jumped at the opportunity. It looked like something my family would like and would continue to let my boys get associated with Motown classics.

Our thoughts about Reach Out:

I decided to take the CD into the car when we went for a ride the other day. That meant I had a captive audience with the two boys (6 and 2) and hubby. We popped it in and started. I will not lie, JSL (2) protested. He did not want to listen and was demanding to hear Wiggles. His little demands and mini-tantrum were not given into. We were going to listen to Human Nature and not the usual Aussie kids music. NHL (6) asked about the songs. He wanted to know what they were. We told him they were a group from Australia singing Motown music that is very popular in the United States. He was cooperative and willing to listen.

Of course, NHL was a fan of the CD the minute he heard what track #9 was. That would be ABC and was one of the Michael Jackson songs that he performed at his school assembly. My kiddo shocked people at Disney when he belted out each and every word of this song at a party that we attended. Sure enough, when the song came on in the car he was singing and dancing in his seat. He loved it and kept asking to hear it over and over again. As I sit here and type this up now, my little guy is begging to hear ABC over and over – so we have another kiddo that is enamored with this song.

Not to worry, we did not simply listen to ABC over and over. We only did that 4-5 times that afternoon! We continued on with the entire CD. TechyDad and I noted that the songs are reminiscent of the classic Motown feel, but updated some. Several of the songs have tempos that are a bit faster and beats that are a little more bold. We both enjoyed it a lot. Even NHL wanted to explore some of the other songs and will dance along with them when we play the CD in the house.

I really enjoyed Reach Out by Human Nature and will be on the look out for more music from this bright and shining group from Down Under.

Curious George 2 CD (Review/Giveaway)

I believe the first full length movie that NHL (now 6) saw on DVD was Curious George. I remember sitting there watching him cry during the sad scenes and laugh hysterically at Geoge’s antics. It was at that moment that we became big George fans. We have dozens of the original books and several from the television show. In addition to that, each of the boys have a George stuffed animal and JSL has a George flannel pillow case. Our DVR is filled with Curious George episodes, plus we own the original movie and soundtrack.

For the love of George

When we were asked to review the "Curious George 2 – Follow That Monkey" CD, I jumped at the opportunity. Thanks to The Family Review network, we received an advanced copy of the CD to listen to. The “Curious George 2″ Soundtrack will be released by the Savoy Label Group on March 2nd, 2010.  The Soundtrack features Brian Wilson, Jackie Greene, and Carbon Leaf.

Here is more about the soundtrack:

The world’s most beloved and inquisitive monkey is back in “CURIOUS GEORGE 2: FOLLOW THAT MONKEY,” the sequel to the 2006 animated hit movie.  The soundtrack to “CURIOUS GEORGE 2: FOLLOW THAT MONKEY” features the Rivieras hit “California Sun” performed by Brian Wilson as well as all new songs by Carbon Leaf, a special title track recorded by 429 Records’ artist Jackie Greene and an original score by Heitor Pereira.   Extensive retail and online marketing campaigns are planned globally in support of the soundtrack which will be released worldwide on March 2nd to coincide with the  release of the DVD.

Join Curious George and The Man with the Yellow Hat as they set out on a madcap cross-country adventure to reunite Kayla, a homesick elephant, with her family. This unlikely trio faces all types of comic calamities and colorful characters and in the end learn that with family, friends and determination you can achieve anything. Featuring the voices of Tim Curry, Matt Lauer, Jamie Kennedy and Jerry Lewis, CURIOUS GEORGE 2: FOLLOW THAT MONKEY, “proves that family, friends—and curiosity—are number one.” (Francine Brokaw, Los Angeles Family Magazine)

Track Listing of FOLLOW THAT MONKEY:

  1. Life Less Ordinary – Carbon Leaf
  2. The Friendship – Carbon Leaf
  3. California Sun – Brian Wilson
  4. On A Roll – Carbon Leaf
  5. Heart Of The Day – Carbon Leaf
  6. Let Your Troubles Roll By – Carbon Leaf
  7. Walking In The Sun – Carbon Leaf
  8. Follow That Monkey – Jackie Greene
  9. Moon Man – Heitor Pereira
  10. Going East – Heitor Pereira
  11. Giving A Hand – Heitor Pereira
  12. Zoo – Heitor Pereira
  13. Friendship – Heitor Pereira

What we thought:

The minute the boys saw the CD with Curious George on it, they demanded to listen to it. We put it on and, within seconds, both of the boys were dancing away. The catchy beat of Life Less Ordinary by Carbon Leaf allows a Curious George fan to picture the little fellow romping around with the Man in the Yellow Hat. My six year old really liked this song and got his brother to do a monkey dance along with him. I really liked The Friendship Song, also by Carbon Leaf. The words are powerful and really tells a story about friends within the song. I am intrigued to see how California Sun is used in the soon to be released movie. I can just picture George getting into trouble at a beach in the warm California sun. Brian Wilson does this a little different than the original, but I love the twist on a classic song.

All of the songs leave us anxious to see the new movie when it is released. Both of my boys keep asking when they will be able to see the new George adventure. I know we will be checking it out as soon as we can.

Thanks to 429 Records, one lucky reader will be able to win their very own copy of Curious George 2 – Follow that Monkey soundtrack.

The Princess and the Frog Soundtrack (giveaway)

As a forever child of Disney, I have always bought their soundtracks. If you look in my collection, you will see cassette tapes and CDs for Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and many, many more. These days I buy them to share with my children. When I was asked if I would participate in a review and giveaway for the newly released soundtrack for The Princess & the Frog I jumped right at the opportunity.

Information about The Princess & The Frog Soundtrack (from Walt Disney Records):

Walt Disney Animation Studios presents the musical THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, an animated comedy set in the great city of New Orleans. From the creators of "The Little Mermaid" and "Aladdin" comes a modern twist on a classic tale, featuring a beautiful girl named Tiana, a frog prince who desperately wants to be human again, and a fateful kiss that leads them both on a hilarious adventure through the mystical bayous of Louisiana.

The collection of magical songs from this amazing soundtrack features Anika Noni Rose(Dreamgirls), Ne-Yo(R&B music star) and Academy Award® winning composer Randy Newman. Set in the great city of New Orleans, the sounds of Jazz, Zydeco, Blues, Gospel and more are all present for an unforgettable musical experience the entire family will enjoy!

To hear some of the songs, head over here to the Walt Disney Records website.

What we think:

The minute the boys saw I had a package, they came running. When I opened it up and they could see it was a new Disney CD they wanted me to play it immediately. Although we have not had a chance to see The Princess & the Frog, both are familiar with it. Thanks to the Disney Very Merry Christmas parade that was televised, both of the boys have watched Princess Tiana and heard several of the songs from the play list.

I turned the CD on for us to listen. Both of the boys started to dance and parade around. They really enjoyed the upbeat songs like Down in New Orleans and When We’re Human. It was like I had my own little Mardis Gras Parade in my living room. NHL (6) liked the music and asked to see the movie. We will definitely be doing this and it is likely going to be the first time JSL (2) sees a movie in the theater.

What I really enjoyed was the genuine jazz feel of the soundtrack. It seemed like I was picked up and placed in New Orleans listening to musicians playing their songs. Something else caught my ear. There was something familiar with the beats, sound. When I read the CD case I quickly saw why. All of the songs and score in The Princess and the Frog soundtrack is composed and conducted by Randy Newman. For some reason I just heard a little that reminded me of Toy Story. The song that strikes me as becoming a huge hit is Never Knew I Needed. Talk about a powerful song with a lesson behind it. This will definitely be a Disney Princess song to remember.

Thanks to the soundtrack, we are even more excited about seeing this movie and it will be listened to along with all of our other Disney music in our collection.

Rockabye Baby! the new baby rock

When my oldest son moved into his room in our new house, he had some trouble falling asleep. After many sleepless nights of having a little one bunking with us, we were desperate. We decided to play music on a CD player to lull him to sleep. NHL is now six years old and still likes to fall asleep to music when at home. We have searched near and far for music that we all can work with. For the longest time, we only had one CD and it was used every night. Let’s be honest, there are only so many days in a row that an adult can handle listening to The Wiggles sing your child to sleep on a baby monitor.

Recently, I was contacted by Rockabye Baby! to review some of their CD lullaby renditions with family. This was not the first time I had heard of their music. One of their CDs was on the list of items to get for my new nephew when he is born in February. Of course, this was to keep not only him, but my brother happy as he rocks his son to sleep.

About Rockabye Baby!

From their website:

Rockabye Baby! is staffed by music lovers from all corners of the world. Headquartered in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Silver Lake, the label was born of the need to make children’s music cool–not only for babies but for their parents too. We turned to our record collections for inspiration: punk, metal, classic rock. The resulting albums are revolutionary yet reverential. In other words, the perfect gift for a newborn, new parents, or yourself.

Part of the CMH Label Group, a thirty-year-old independent bluegrass and roots-music stronghold that houses a variety of musical styles under its umbrella, including metal, rap, punk, and string quartet tributes, Rockabye Baby! is the latest addition to a diverse musical family. Says label Vice President Lisa Roth, "First and foremost, we’re fans, so we take care to make every album musically interesting enough to satisfy adult listeners. Believe me, making an album that’s gentle enough for sleeping babies but won’t bore Mom and Dad is trickier than it sounds." Producer/arrangers would agree! The job’s not easy, but it’s immensely gratifying to hear from pleased parents that Rockabye Baby! is now a treasured piece of their family history.

If you have never heard of Rockabye Baby! music you are missing out. They have taken classic music from different types of artists and made them into music perfect to lull your child to sleep. Some of the artists now available:

  • Guns n’ Roses, Metallica, AC/DC, Queen, Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin, U2, Aerosmith, Nirvana, Green Day, Pink Floyd, Tool, The Ramones, Coldplay, Radiohead, The Cure, The Rolling Stones, The Pixies, Nine Inch Nails, The Beach Boys, No Doubt, The Eagles, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Beatles, Bjork  and others

When you go to the Rockabye Baby! online store, you are able to listen songs from each of the albums to help make your decision. It really is not easy since they all are catchy and nice to listen to. While there, be sure to vote for who you would like to see as the next Rockabye Baby! CD. The list includes: Bob Dylan, Bon Jovi, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Stevie Wonder and Slayer.

In addition to the music, Rockabye Baby! also have limited edition Long Sleeve onesies. You can also receive up to 20% off your orders for a Holiday offer good until December 31. For more details click here.

Our thoughts:

We were sent a complimentary copy of the newest Rockabye Baby! – lullyby renditions of Guns n’ Roses along with lullby renditions of Aerosmith.

Rockabye Baby!

When the CDs arrived, I was extremely excited to test them out. Of course, I could not wait until bedtime. I decided to open up the Aerosmith one first. The first thing I noticed was the playful Aerosmith cover art on the CD case and inside. There were also teddy bears paper dolls that were decked out in items from Aerosmith. One of the extremely nice touches was a fabulous note from Steven Tyler (this CD was released in 2009). He wrote that he liked how Rockabye Baby! not only did a cover of Aerosmith’s songs, but took a unique approach to it. He also mentioned that he will be playing these for his grandson.

The boys had heard me playing the Rockabye Baby! music on the computer when I was debating my second CD to receive. As soon as I put the music on the boys looked up. NHL (6) wanted to know what it was. I told him the names of the songs and he was intrigued. Meanwhile, JSL 2, danced around quietly to the music that featured mellotrons, vibraphones and bells. Some of the songs are easier to recognize than others. This CD included the following Aerosmith hits:

  • I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, Dude (Looks Like a Lady), Dream On, Walk This Way, Cryin’, Mama Kin, Rag Doll, Last Child, Same Old Song and Dance, Sweet Emotion, Amazing and Angel

At dinner the same night, I popped in the Guns n’ Roses Rockabye Baby! CD. I wanted my husband to listen and see what the boys’ reaction would be. The minute Welcome to the Jungle came on my son made the following statement: "Mom, can I please listen to that when I fall asleep tonight?" Sure enough, when it was time to tuck him in we started his usual music. He immediately protested and asked for the Guns n’ Roses, so we went to put it on. This CD included the following songs:

  • Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child O’ Mine, Paradise City, Live and Let Die, November Rain, You Could Be Mine, Mr. Brownstone, Estranged, Yesterdays, Don’t Cry, Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door and Patience

NHL fell asleep in record time that night. The best part was both of the boys asked to listen to the music while playing with trains in their room. NHL has also asked to hear the real renditions of the songs from Aerosmith and Guns n’ Roses. This will be nice to share with him and expand his musical appreciation.

We are definitely going to purchase one of these CDs for my new nephew and add more to our collection of night time music.  I just need to touch base with my family  to see which one they would like since there are so many groups that I know my brother loves. If you need a baby shower gift, or unique item for a music lover, I highly recommend Rockabye Baby CDs.
