Celebrating Sukkot

Many people do not realize that the holiday season continues for Jewish people beyond Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We are actually celebrating Sukkot right now. In the past, I have shared photos from our Sukkot celebrations, including those from JSL’s nursery school last year.

While we do not have our own sukkah, the boys helped to make decorations for the one at Hebrew School. We also hope to bring them to visit the one at our synagogue. While I am off sharing traditions with my family, I thought I would include a new Sukkot video from the Fountainheads.

The song is a beautiful parody of a popular song that teaches people about the holiday and was filmed in Israel. Enjoy and happy holidays to all that celebrate

Rosh Hashanah Fun for Younger Kids

Thank goodness times have changed since I was a child. More specifically in the world of Jewish books, music, and videos. When I was growing up, there were few items to read and most only tackled Chanukah. Now, you can find books about the Festival of lights along with Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Passover, and beyond.

While I am off celebrating the Jewish New Year with my family, I thought I would share some of the new Shalom Sesame that are out there for families to learn about the holidays in an age appropriate manner.

We have seen several of these DVDs that were sent to us from the PJ Library. Now, JSL wants the Rosh Hashanah one thanks to the Sticky Shofar video we watched together.

Once again, to all those that celebrate Rosh Hashanah – I wish you and your family a Happy, Healthy, and Sweet New Year.

Percussion Playing Prowess

Dear NHL,

In the fall, when you decided that you wanted to play percussion instruments, I wondered how things would go. With most of the school year and two concerts behind you, I can hardly imagine life without a percussion playing kiddo in our house. Though the bell set is a bit shrill at times, we can recognize songs when you play them. The only down side is the size of your kit that has to travel into school each week. I now know where to park to drop it off and where to set it down outside of school at the end of the day.

While we were at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, we made sure to stop over by the drum area in Africa. Daddy and I knew that you would have fun experimenting on the different items that were there.

Of course, it was also interesting to watch your little brother follow you around. As you can see, one of you had an easier time switching things up, while the other needs to stretch a bit more.

Still, I think the moment that made me the proudest happened at Mimi’s house on Mother’s Day. She had a little keyboard. Suddenly, we heard a song and looked over. There you were taking what you learned from playing the xylophone to play the same song on the piano without any sheet music. Of course, I wanted to test this theory. When we went to Nana and Papa’s house a few days later, you did it again proving that you really have learned quite a bit. Keep up the great work. I can’t wait to see how much more you learn next year and beyond.

Mama Doni Gives Us Mission Immatzoble

Passover is coming! Passover is coming! Purim was just here and now it seems like we went full speed ahead into Passover. Thanks to this, TechyDad and I are busy getting our house ready for the Seders this weekend. Before I know it, our house will be taken over by this:

To get everyone in the mood, I wanted to share a great new video from Mama Doni. As a fan, I follow her on Facebook and happened to see this and asked if I could post it here. So please take a little time to rock out to Doni’s new Mission Immatzoble music video – it is AMAZING!

Purim Parties Galore

Holidays come and holidays go. For some reason, Purim seems to stick around longer and longer each year. I love the holiday and the fun associated with it. However, getting kids dressed up so many times, heading to events, and everything else can get rough after a week.

Still, looking at the fun that the kids had makes it all well worth it.

Tomorrow, we will finally be able to put another Purim “season” behind us and move on. This bring me to the other reason Purim may have a sore spot with me. This fun holiday reminds me that Passover is just around the corner. We need to weed out our cabinets of non-Passover food and start thinking about our Seders. I think I am still in denial about all that goes with shopping and planning.

For now, I will remember the Purim celebration at JSL’s school that included a concert from Andy the Music Man. It was so much fun watching the kids parade around in costumes, sing, and dance with Andy. He was full of energy, funny, and so patient with the kids (and adults too). I know we will be looking to see where he will be performing in the weeks ahead to catch another show. Capital District readers, if you have a chance to see Andy – do not miss it!

I recorded a video of the Purim parade that was so adorable. I will share it with family members privately since I do not have permission from all of the parents to post it on YouTube.
