Ramona and Beezus – The Movie!

As much as I love to read now, I was a reluctant reader as a child. I did not like teachers telling me that I had to read so many books each month, or a specific title. Thankfully, there were books out there that made me want to read and keep at it. Beverly Cleary is an author that saved me for years. Thanks to her books, I was able to find characters that would keep me engaged in reading and laughing while I went. If you are not familiar with the name Beverly Cleary, you may remember her infamous Ramona Quimby. Ramona was the Junie B. Jones of my generation – only she keeps on giving. Ramona and her family and friends continue to keep generations of kids reading to see what quirky adventure she will go on. I have secretly been wishing and waiting for NHL (almost 7) to be ready to read the Ramona books to share the experience with him.

RAMONA AND BEEZUS

Several months ago, I heard that they were finishing up a movie called Ramona and Beezus. I had mixed emotions. Movies that are based on books often do not live up to my expectations (see Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs – my favorite picture book). Of course, the Harry Potter movies have created a new level of book to movie phenomena. While teaching, I also did comparisons of books and Hollywood versions with my students (perfect Vehn Diagram opportunity for pre-writing). I knew that I had to see this movie.

Time went by and I heard bits and pieces about the movie. Then out of the blue, we were invited to a pre-screening of Ramona and Beezus (rated G) last week (it opens TODAY). The boys and I went, along with my Aunt S and grandmother to see Ramona and Beezus on the big screen. Thanks to the quick nature of this, I did not have time to reread the books, so my memories of Ramona are sketchy at best. When the movie began, I was instantly brought back to my childhood. Here was Ramona, Beezus, Picky Picky, Henry Higgins and the rest of the gang in front of my eyes. Thanks to Selena Gomez (Beezus in the movie), I have the official Ramona and Beezus Trailer to show you. Sit back, relax and enjoy!

What we thought:

Let me begin by saying that I really enjoyed the movie. Every time a new actor came onto the screen as a familiar character, I was taken a bit more into the wonderful and wacky world of Ramona Quimby. While watching the movie, I made a mental note that I had to find my old copies of the books to reread. The story of Ramona and Beezus is classic. There are two sisters realizing the important family bond as they move through some struggles in life to save their home. The movie really lives up to the tagline:  "A Little Sister Goes A Long Way."

Joey King was Ramona and did a fabulous job in the role. She was cute, spunky and had the Ramona timing down. It really is hard to believe that this is her first motion picture appearance. The chemistry between Ramona and Beezus was also special in this film. Selena Gomez takes on the role of big sister Beezus and plays the perfect teenage counterpart to King’s Ramona. The two young ladies without a doubt brought the world of Ramona from the pages to the big screen.

RAMONA AND BEEZUS

Simply stated, director Elizabeth Allen created Ramona’s world in this film. She did a great job going from the serious scenes about the family losing their house, to Ramona’s day dreams and back to the silly water fight and lemonade scenes.

In addition to Joey King and Selena Gomez, the cast of actors in Ramona and Beezus helped this classic book come alive for fans of all ages. I am a long time fan of John Corbett and enjoyed seeing him as Robert Quimby. He showed his softer side and really had nice chemistry with Joey King, especially during the drawing scene with her. Bridget Moynahan was Dorothy Quimby. She played a serious mom, who could see the humor in a the antics of her quirky little girl. One of the best surprises in the movie was Ginnifer Goodwin in the role of Ramona’s beloved Aunt Bea. As a big fan of Big Love, it was nice seeing her spread her wings and show more of the comedic timing that is sometimes hinted at when playing Margene. Josh Duhamel as Hobart is a great counterpart to Goodwin and works well with the kids in the film. One other big surprise to me was Sandra Oh (Dr. Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy) as Mrs. Meacham. As a teacher, I loved her portrayal of the straight-laced and slightly sarcastic Mrs. Meacham. Of course, I have to admit, I did see hints of Dr. Yang coming into the role – especially when she rolled her eyes a certain way.

RAMONA AND BEEZUS

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie. I do believe that Ramona fans of all ages will appreciate the book coming alive in front of their eyes. On the flip side, my almost seven year old son now wants to read the Ramona books. He had never heard of Ramona before the movie and is now excited to read more about this quirky little girl. Today, I will be heading out to get a copy of the book to use as the perfect summer read aloud now that we have seen the movie. Oh, I am purposely not telling you my favorite scenes from the movie since I do not want to spoil anything for you when you go and see it.

I highly recommend the movie Ramona and Beezus to people that grew up with Ramona and new fans alike (also a great summer family movie). The storyline and acting will help keep you in the land of Ramona Quimby and begging Beverly Cleary for more wonderful literary creations.

Toy Story 3 as first movie

Memories of my first times going to see a movie in a theater and at a drive in still are strong. How about you, do you recall what the first movie you saw in a theater was or your child’s?

When NHL was three, we went to visit Aunt M and Uncle I, along with Nana and . Nana and Papa came along for an extra special visit. It was winter break, December 2006, and we were there for a long weekend. Since it was Christmas, there was not a lot going on. We decided to all take NHL to see his first movie in a theater. We saw Happy Feet. NHL was so excited, but he also wanted to see the potty several times during the show. I started blogging just months after this, and apparently we did not take photos at the movie (bad us – sorry NHL). Here is one from that trip of NHL baking cookies with Aunt M.

NHL making cookies with Aunt M - Dec 2006

Fast forward to July 4th. We decided to take JSL to see his first movie in a theater. He is a HUGE Toy Story fan. He has been in love with them since our trip to Disney in February when he met Buzz and Woody and rode on the Toy Story Midway Mania ride at Hollywood Studios. Sad to admit, I have not been to see a movie in a theater since Twilight was out (not even New Moon – nor Eclipse). The last movie I saw with NHL was Happy Feet, but he saw Horton Hears a Who and Up with Nana and Papa.

Sunday morning, we decided to go and see Toy Story 3 with the boys. We settled on a 1:50 start time and did not go to the 3D version. I had never been to the new theaters and thought the party room that was there was too cute (made me think of things to do for NHL’s B-day).

Party room at movies

Then, JSL modeled his Buzz Lightyear attire. Yes, he insisted on taking one of his Buzz figures with us.

Can you tell his favorite Toy Story character?

We walked down the hall to the theater. I received a few looks from people working at the theater as I took photos. I looked at one and said "I blog – therefore I take photos of my son’s first movie experience!"  He gave me a thumbs up and kept walking.

Heading to Toy Story 3

At first, JSL did not want to walk in. The darkness inside scared him a bit. We reassured him that it was not bad and he would see Buzz Lightyear, Woody and Friends inside.

Not too sure about this

There was hardly anyone inside when we got there (this would change as time went by). We opted to sit in the front row of the stadium seating area. We also went to the side near an escape area, just in case we needed it. This would prove to be a great place later on when JSL was antsy during an intense scene of the movie and wanted to stand up. JSL sat really well waiting for the movie to begin.

Is it show time yet?

After a few previews, he was getting a little upset and asked JL where Buzz Lightyear and Woody were. Luckily, they came on soon and he was very happy.

When we made it back to the car, JSL showed his age. My sweet little three year old passed out in the carseat on the way home. Note his Buzz Lightyear hat, shirt and Buzz toy firmly gripped in his hand.

My tired little Toy Story fan

If you have not seen Toy Story 3, we highly recommend it. Loved the way that Pixar has improved on this series with each sequel. Way to go Disney and thank you for all of the Toys Story Memories that we have from JSL’s first movie!

The boys did so well, I am thinking about taking them to the free movie tomorrow solo. Someone please hold me!

Lost in the movie world

Since NHL (6) was born, I can probably count the number of movies that I have seen in the theater on one hand. The last was Twilight for a girls day out with a friend. We saw this quite a bit after the release. Prior to that, I think we saw a movie before JSL (2) was born with my brother and his wife. The one before that was NHL’s first time in a theater. We saw Happy Feet  with lots of extended family over Christmas break while out of town.

Seriously sad isn’t it?

Although I like going to the movies, the cost is not worth it to me. I like being in the comfort of my own home, being able to stop the movie when I need to use the facilities and tossing the kids into bed if they fall asleep. We recently won a Roku Box and decided to get Netflix with it. Thanks to this we have movies on demand and can have a few DVDs at home.

My problem: I can’t remember all of the movies that I wanted to see when they were in the theaters and are now on DVD. I should have made lists, but I never did.  Right now I have Julie & Julia, along with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to watch. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is next on our Queue and after that a bunch of things for TechyDad, the boys and some television shows.

So my question to you this week:

What movies have you seen lately that you would suggest we add to our Netflix queue?

Buy General Mills cereal and go to movies – Giveaway

Since I had my oldest son, over six years ago, I can count the number of times I have seen a movie in the theater on one hand. Sad to say, but very true. At first it was trying to find time to go with a newborn, then it was what to see with a child and quickly after that can we afford to go with the skyrocketing price of admission?

Imagine buying some of your favorite cereals and being able to submit codes to get free tickets to see a movie. The great news is that this is a reality. There is a current promotion from General Mills called e-movie cash.

General Mills e-movie cash promotion

When I was contacted about this promotion, it was news to me. We buy a lot of the participating cereal, but I had not seen the boxes in our stores yet. I was sent a "Movie Moment" prize pack that included 4 e-movie cash certificates ($12 each) and one free coupon for a free General Mills Cereal.

As soon as our tickets arrived, my husband and I started to think. Should we see what family movies are coming out and try to take both of the boys? Or, should we do two date nights to the movies for the two of us? We still have not decided, but are working on that now that several new movies that look interesting are coming out.

Details about the e-movie cash promotion:

Starting in November, you can receive a free movie ticket when you purchase two specially marked packages of General Mills’ Cereals. After purchasing two cereals, visit generalmills.com/moviecash to enter the code found inside each box of cereal and print your free movie certificate good for admission to any movie.

Participating brands include select sizes of: Honey Nut Cheerios, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, Trix and Reese’s Peanut Butter Puffs.

To find a participating theater near you, log onto http://emoviecash.com/dis_locator/.

I know that we will be buying more of the participating cereals (love Honey Nut Cheerios and Cinnamon Toast Crunch in our house) and log the code from the specially marked boxes to obtain some additional e-movie cash for our family. At this time every little bit helps, especially when you can use something you already buy to score some nice family entertainment for free.

Where the Wild Things Are comes alive in IMAX

Imagine being sent to your room because your mother calls you a wild thing. When you get there, you turn your anger into a creative adventure using your imagination. Suddenly, your bedroom is magically changing into another world. You are thrust into a world of wild things where you are crowned king.

This is the premise of Maurice Sendak’s 1964 Caldecott Medal winning book. For over forty years this book has been a classic that generations of parents and grandparents have shared  with children. I still remember hearing this book on tape (perhaps record) in the library of my elementary school. Back in those days (early 80’s), we were thrilled that it came with a (*gasp*) film strip of the illustrations. Each time the little beep sounded, the librarian would move to the next exciting picture of Max on his adventure with the Wild Things.

Where The Wild Things Are

On Friday, October 16th, Where the Wild Things Are: The IMAX Experience opened. Now you can take a special child in your life, or treat the child within to this new version of a 40 year old classic on film. To help and celebrate the release, IMAX is going to be starting a promotion just for their Facebook fans on Monday, October 19th. Each day of that week, two lucky fans who put the Where the Wild Things Are crown on their profile picture and comment on the IMAX Wall will be entered to win an exclusive IMAX Where the Wild Things Are poster, book, and a pair of IMAX movie tickets!  The crown image and full intructions will be released on the IMAX Fan Page on Monday.

Thanks to Momfluence, I have an additional opportunity to offer my readers.

Two readers across all participating Momfluence blogs (about 30) will win a Where the Wild Things Are Prize Pack which includes the following:

  • An adult Where the Wild Things Are t-shirt (L or XL)
  • A kids Where the Wild Things Are t-shirt (size large)
  • A Where the Wild Things Are crown
  • An exclusive Where the Wild Things Are IMAX poster
  • Where the Wild Things Are book

If you are on Twitter, please be aware that  there will also be a Twitter party for this event – hashtag #IMAXWildThings – Monday from 9 to 10 p.m. ET. Even more prizes and tickets will be awarded during this time.

I know that I will be reading the book Where the Wild Things Are to both of my boys. With any luck, we will also take my six year old son to see the IMAX movie as a special treat in the next week. As a parent, teacher and kid at heart I look forward to seeing Sendak’s classic up on the big screen. Good luck to all those that enter the two contests!

Disclosure: As a Momfluence member, I was asked to help spread the word about the release of the IMAX Where the Wild Things Are movie and two related contests. I received no compensation for this post. As a bonus, I will be entered to possibly win a Momfluence blogger prize pack like the one being given away.
