My Disney Side

It it really hard to explain what my Disney Side is because Disney is part of who I am. I can not recall a time that Disney was not in my life. I still remember going to Walt Disney World as a Toddler without my brother. Then, learning to make phone calls was extra magical on our Mickey Mouse rotary phone (classic). Multiple magical trips to different resorts in Orlando as a child, and the adventure to Hawaii and Disneyland to celebrate my father’s 40th birthday. When TechyDad and I began our life as husband and wife, we went on a Walt Disney World honeymoon. This was his first trip and I quickly made him understand why the Disney Side was crucial in life. While we now bring the kids with us, I still love how Disney can make me feel like a kid, melt away the stress of life, and smile every day.

Goodbye to 2013 – Part 1

It is hard to believe that that end of 2013 is already here. Looking back at this year, it is difficult to focus on a theme. There were many ups and downs, but I really feel that my growth as an advocate was huge and a major accomplishment over the last 365 days. Here is a trip down memory lane of the year that was 2013.

January:

February:

  • This was the month where the kindergarten kiddo celebrated 100 days of school. We had fun putting together his project.
  • February also marked my sixth year of blogging. My have I come a long way from those first days.
  • A favorite activity from the winter months was definitely when we made slime. The boys spent hours playing and exploring for days and also enjoyed making a fort in our living room.

Arts Paradis on Etsy

Several months ago, my friend at Chaos in the Country shared some earrings that she liked from a store on Etsy. I clicked on the link and browsed for quite some time. I immediately fell in love with several items from Arts Paradis and knew that I would be ordering something. Time went by and I sent some messages to Charlene Wood to see if she could made her beautiful angel earrings in different colors. Before I knew it, she wrote back to me and said she was going shopping and would look for new colors. A few days later, a rainbow of angel earrings were available in her Etsy store.

Shortly after this, I tried to figure out what to order myself for the boys to give me for my birthday. Yes, you read that right. I told TechyDad that I really wanted something from Charlene’s store and was going to order them. Not long after my order was placed, they arrived in a beautiful little bag grouped together.

Earrings from Arts Paradis

The photos above do not do the earrings justice. They are amazing! Not only are the earrings beautiful, they are constructed really well. Charlene also looked into something that I inquired about. I told her that I really wanted to get something for autism awareness one day. Well, she ordered some items to make some different styles. I am linking to the autism items here. Right now she has wine glass charms, a bracelet, key chain, and several pairs of earrings.

Have you ever bought yourself a birthday present for someone to give you before? I would love to know if other have done this.

It's Me

Disclosure: None, I simply wanted to share a great artist on Etsy. I bought my earrings and loved them so much I hope others may find something they enjoy.

Birthdays Come and Birthdays Go

For weeks, I have been dreading this week. Not because of my birthday (today) and getting another year older. It has more to do with the crazy that is the week. Winter band/chorus concert, orthodontist appointment, Hebrew School, meeting, and another doctor appointment. In addition to these items, I need to turn up the heat on my public school advocacy. Some recent events have me even more concerned about the damage being done to children by education reform, specifically Common Core. Happy Birthday to me writing and calling more members of the NYS Assembly, more NYS Senators, and following up about something that still brings tears to my eyes from last week.

To distract me after plans for the weekend changed, my family thought ahead and asked to celebrate my birthday a day early. Sunday night we had a delicious dinner and ice cream cake (my childhood favorite) at Nana and Papa’s house.

Ice Cream Birthday Cake

Earlier in the day, TechyDad and I went shopping before the malls were super busy. I finally made it to the newly opened Vera Bradley store at the mall. I had received an amazing coupon to use and usually spent it online. It was such a great experience to go into the store and see the patterns and different items in person. In the end, I scored an amazing deal on a Backpack and wallet in Indigo Pop. Something very different, practical for my use, and fun colors to brighten the days and my travels.

Assuming we do not have a school delay for ice/snow, I hope to have a quiet day getting some work done and crocheting a bit. Now I will take a deep breath, count to ten, and get ready for whatever this week and the year ahead bring me.

Public Education Advocacy

For months, I have been biting my tongue about something that has been on my mind practically 24/7. I am a teacher and while I may not be in a classroom, I have been watching the public education system that my children are in fall apart. I am an advocate and I should not be afraid to get the word out. Yet, prior to heading to Atlanta for TypeACon, I was cautious at best. My blog posts about education were vague, guarded, and I thought I was protecting my children. The fact is, I wasn’t. The reality is that it was fear of possibly never getting another teaching job based on my blog. The four inspirational women below made me see the light and for that I am eternally thankful.

Cause Blogging and the New Media Activist

The session on Cause Blogging and the New Media Activist sparked something in me. Moderator Ilina Ewen and speakers: Fadra Nally, Sarah Pinnix, and Chrysula Winnegar explained that we need to find something we are passionate about and use our voice.

I know what I am passionate about. Not only am I invested in public education as an educator, I have two young sons who deserve a proper education and should not be guinea pigs for companies using them to get rich.

I sat there in the room with my mind going a mile a minute. I knew what I needed to do, but did I have the guts to do it? Could I finally say enough is enough, I am not going to hold back and perhaps words that I write can make a difference to another parent that does not know the way the system is working against our children?

Then, on the last night of TypeACon, I walked over to Fadra Nally to thank her. I told her that I knew my cause and I just had to figure out the way I was going to attack it. Then I admitted to her what had been holding me back. Do you know what she told me?

Wise words from Fadra Nally at TypeACon

That is right, Fadra said “So what” and asked if I really wanted to go back into a classroom. I do, but not with the current state of the system and I know it is not going to change without a fight from parents. I have enough on my plate trying to work the system for my children and can not fathom APPR, Common Core, constant testing, and not being able to do what is best for the KIDS.

Now I am going to be more vocal on my blog and beyond. Parents in New York State and other locations need to know the truth about out children being used as data points to make companies rich. They have the right to know that their kids are being over tested and not taught in a developmentally appropriate way. Parents need to know that the blame game does NOT start with the teachers, they are innocent victims in this. The teachers are forced to do what they are told or they will not have a job. The blame game in New York State goes to the Board of Regents that hired Commissioner John King to head NYSED. The finger pointing belongs to districts that have refused to stand up and say enough is enough with the high stakes testing, teaching to the tests, and claim of more rigor in the classroom. Our children need to learn the basics, they need to trust educators.

Public School Parent Advocacy

We as a group must stand up and fight back. Rather than sit back and accept what the schools are doing we much be vocal and let them know that they are failing our children. Educators need to be in the drivers seat, not politicians and companies only looking for money at the next generation’s expense. We were always taught to listen to the schools and follow them. Well I am here to tell you to stop. Get the facts, see past the propaganda (especially in NYS with engageNY and Common Core) and get out there to other parents and help them to fight for our children.
