In Need of Relaxation

The last few weeks have been very stressful. Time spent worrying about an extremely important meeting. Even while worrying, TechyDad and I had to prepare for said meeting. Then, after all of the worries, waiting, and preparing, we had to deal with the aftermath of the meeting. The stress has taken a toll on me. My body is stressed and trying to fight off a cold that is quickly making breathing hard. Asthma after the flu a few years ago has not been kind.

I know what I want to be doing right now. Since reading with a head cold can be hard, I would put the books aside and knit. Of course, multi-tasking while knitting is easier. I would love to go curl up on the couch under a blanket to watch a movie and knit.

Brave DVD and Knitting

Of course, this is the real world. Brave will have to wait to be watched later in the week. There is freelance writing to be done, legal documents to read over, and investigations to be made about Couch to 5K apps. Yes, while sick I joined a group to tackle something I have been longing to try for quite some time. I know it’s crazy to attempt it in the winter in New York for the first time, but I will not let that be an excuse. So just add the need for running shoes to my list of items for the week.

If you have any Couch to 5K words of advice, I would love to hear them now. I am doing this to get moving, help ME feel better, hopefully drop some pounds, and prove to myself that I am worth the time.

It's Me

P.S. A special prayer to my friends and family in Israel. Worry for all of you grows each day with news spreading about the new normal in your lives.

Photo Editing on the Go

I have had my Droid Bionic phone for a while now. There are a group of apps that I really enjoy, but there was something that was missing. I wanted a photo editing app that would allow me to fix color and do a little more. I stumbled upon PicsArt and decided to give it a try. I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised and I have barely scratched the surface with what I could probably do.

PicsArt Photo Editing App for Android

While we were at Walt Disney World in April, I blogged from my phone. I had a watermarking app, but nothing to “fix” photos and make them more mine. With PicsArt I can add fun effects, make a collage, draw, edit a photo, and so much more. This was my first attempt several weeks ago at fixing up a blurry, washed out nighttime  photo.

PicsArt Before and After Editing

It still isn’t perfect to my standards, but for a first attempt and without a more sophisticated editing tool on my computer – it works well. Next, I wanted to try some of the fun effects. I tried the PopArt and thought it was fun. I liked it (on the left below this), but decided to tweak it a little bit more and came up with another variation (on the right).

Thanks to the grid dimensions, the collages work well to put right into Instagram when you are finished. For Halloween, I was able to make a fun pumpkin and share it there.

Here’s another example of something I made for Instagram to show a project that I am currently knitting. I love that I can just do most things right in the one screen.

So my question to you this week:

Do you like to edit photos on your computer and/or phone. What do you use and why do you like it? On my computer, I use PhotoScape and PicMonkey in case you were curious.

FYI – Do not forget to enter my current giveaway for Marlow and the Monster (ends 11/14). It is a great book for kids that would make a great holiday gift.

Crayola Crayon Crazy

Perry For PresidentI have an admission, I love Crayola crayons. Back to school used to be my favorite time of year. Walking down craft aisles and into stores with boxes and boxes of beautiful new crayons. Even though I am an adult, I still love drawing, coloring, and doodling with crayons. If there was more time in the day, I would have mandated coloring therapy with the kids. It’s fun, something we can all do, and a way to be creative.

Times have changed. Back to school is not the only time of year to get fun new crayons. Earlier this week I was shopping at Target. When I went down the craft aisle, a new display of Crayola Crayons caught my eyes. They were shiny, different, and intriguing. Check some of them out here:

Crayola Themed Crayons at Target

Aren’t they pretty? Since I was in a hurry, I took a few photos to research them when I got back home. There are 12 different flavors, -er I mean types of the Crayola PYO Crayon 8ct that are only available at Target stores. They include:

Born to Rock – Pirate’s Treasure – Over the Rainbow – Metallic Magic – Dinosaur Roar – Mermaid Shimmer – Pink Princess – Cupcake My Day – Neon Dreams – Gliteratti – Rocker Girl – Sports Fan

Crayola PYO Crayons from Target

Although I wanted to buy all of them, I decided to wait. I am going to take the boys back to let them pick out their own choices. If you are interested, you can see them on the Target website here. Crayola did not ask me to post this, I am just a big fan and thought they were fun for kids of all ages.

So my question to you this week:

Which pack of Crayola PYO crayons would you pick first and what would you color with them?

FYI – Three book giveaways are currently going on that would make great gifts. Linnea in Monet’s Garden (ends 10/30), some classic stories from Silver Penny Stories (ends 10/27), and a Spooktacular Book Prize Pack (ends 11/1). Another fun picture book coming on Tuesday Tales.

Early Intervention is Key with Autism

As a parent, we quickly learn that we are the best advocates for our children. Of course, sometimes doing this is easier than other times. Some days, it can be grueling, leaving you in tears, and making you wonder if you are all alone. Those days are hard on the spirit and can definitely knock the wind out of you. On days like that, you learn who your true friends are and who is on your side. Then you make yourself take a deep breath to figure out a plan B, C, D, and maybe even E.

Autism RibbonAs a parent of a child with special needs, I understand this feeling all too well. Years of struggles, countless different answers, and lots of time, energy, and money spent. Watching a child blossom and grow because of early intervention is one of the most amazing items to experience. Your work as an advocate, your child’s grueling hours spent in therapy, and their therapists’ expertise make it worth it when you reach goals that you never believed could happen at one time or another.

Countless people are battling these items each and every day while trying to understand why their child is a statistic. Why is their son, daughter, niece, nephew, granddaughter, grandson, husband, wife, mother, father, cousin, or other person that they love part of the 1 in 88 living with Autism?

On Sunday, October 21, Comedy Central will be airing a special called Night of Too Many Stars. For the fourth year in a row, celebrities will be working together to raise money for Autism charities that support the educational needs of children and families. They not only help to provide programs for the children, but also education for teachers that will be working with the kids in their classrooms. Here is a sneak peek of Jodi DiPiazza:

Jodi and her family are a true inspiration to watch and see that with the right educational tools, kids with special needs can reach goals. With assistance, support, love, and understanding – they can seek new heights and go after their dreams.

There is no cure for Autism, but together we can make a difference to allow people to reach their potential. Remember never to judge a child, parent, or anyone because often you do not know what is happening behind the scenes. Be supportive, help if you can, or just move along and try not to stare. To those amazing individuals out there that work with families like mine, a huge thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Disney Story Telling with Ridley Pearson

Every time you go to Walt Disney World or another Disney park, you are part of a story. The rides, shows, Cast Members, and all of the little details are part of the tale. Now imagine being invited to hear a real Disney author talk and then get a tour of Epcot to see where his visions came from. This happened to me in April when I went to the Disney Social Media Moms celebration and heard author Ridley Pearson explain how The Kingdom Keepers and Peter and the Starcatchers were born. After the session, he took a group of us to visit Norway in Epcot and ride on Maelstrom. This only seemed fitting for the Disney Wordless Wednesday theme of Story Telling.
