Mount Dinocake practice

As previously mentioned, my soon to be five year old son, NHL,  asked for a dinosaur cake with a volcano on it. Rather than run and hide, I decided to make it . In my last post, I showed how I sculpted the volcano shape from our giant cupcake mold. It was not too horrible, but the real challenge would come in finding the right decorating tools to make it really look like a volcano.

We bought whipped milk chocolate frosting to go on the complete outside of the volcano mountain. I have found that the whipped variety spreads much easier. In addition to this, it works nicely in my decorating tools if need be. Below is what it looked like after covering the volcano shape completely with this frosting.

The first decorating step

Please note that JL and I were acting like kids. We quickly realized what the cake also looked like and did impressions of Mr. Hankey.

Next we had to decide which of the items to use for the lava coming down the volcano. We had purhased two items after researching this online. They were:

Lava options

Since we were unable to locate plain strawberry Fruit by the Foot I tried the Berry Tie-Dye one. It did not work! The red icing was set up using the star tip and I was ready to go. As you will see, a volcano was quikly born.

Voila. . . a volcano is born!

Once this was done I made the cupcakes to take to NHL’s birthday party with a friend that was today. I used the extra red icing and some sparkle sugar sprinkles. Photos of those to come with details of the party. I also decided to use the remaining chocolate frosting to make the excess giant cupcake remnants into something more pretty. Here is a before and after.

Cake extras

Next Friday I will bake another giant cupcake, freeze it until Sunday to take to NHL’s family party where I will construct another volcano with dinosaurs around it, officially naming it Mount Dinocake!

For now my project is to figure out how to get this volcano cake to JL’s work on Monday. At least that is the plan now.

Bowl hats and Boston accents

Apparently the new in way to condition your hair for the toddler set is to use a bowl that previously had pasta with margarine in it. Case in point my little monkey Monday night. You know the same evening he was eating his toes. Here he is all shiny and conditioned.

If I smile they can not be mad at me

Could you be angry with that face?  I do not think so! Especially if the little guy is sitting there chanting "hat" over and over as he proudly dons his new chapeau.

Soon after this we took away JSL’s new hat and gave him some crackers. Who knew crackers could be so exciting?Check out his reaction here:

We are still trying to figure out where the Boston accent comes from. Perhaps I should test this and ask him to say "park the car" and see what happens.

Once the crackers were gone, it was time to use the miracles of soap and it’s surfactant quality to rid the grease build up in JSL’s hair from his new beloved hat. After tub time all three of the boys had some fun romping around.

The boys being boys before bed time

Right before NHL and I went to read more of a Magic Treehouse book we decided to familiarize JSL with a real hat.

Sporting a real hat

 Wonder what is in here?

So in review:  JSL not only has a thing right now with eating his own feet, he also loves to put anything and everything on his head and scream "hat" at the top of his lungs.

Ah, to be 14 months old and love the simple things in life!

Weekend full of teething

This weekend it was teething festival here in Angel Land. Not only did my little niece S cut her first two teeth while visiting, but JSL was also hard at work. Friday night into Saturday two tiny points of his upper one year molars finally showed their face. Sunday into Monday JSL was up most of the night. Yesterday he had a low grade fever and sure enough I believe molar four has now graced us. He has been working on these suckers for quite some time. Hopefully having them cut will relieve the pressure. Now I just hope that the fever is gone because it always makes me nervous with him after our adventure and hospital stay in February.

Obviously I have no photos of the teeth, but I am including more attempts at photos of the three cousins from the weekend. Many of you may recall my Mission Impossible post from earlier in the month. Please note these are also to keep Nana happy since she checks in here!

Both of the boys love their little cousin S. NHL and JSL enjoyed showing her all of the new toys at Nana and Papa’s house.

The boys with cousin S

Watching JSL and S play was too funny. They played follow the leader often, and would get into baby spats over toys. JSL was usually a gentleman and gave his little cousin what she wanted.

Sunday morning before going home S gave all of us a big scare. She had egg yolk for the first time and had a horrible allergic reaction. Thankfully after some antihistamine you would never know that she had anything happen. It was quite scarry for all of us here, and especially for Aunt M who was away. While we watched to make sure the medicine worked the kids played.

Cousins play together

Nana had to work during the day and requested once again a photo of all three of the kids. As you know from the previously mentioned Mission Impossible, this is no easy task. Here I present all of the kids together in one way or another. BTW – the program I used to make the collage chopped the parts off, so this was not the best view of these photos.

Technically all three kids together

Cousin S loved to show everyone she was "So Big" and JSL loved to laugh and dance for the turkey that Papa had. All was good in the land of teething kids.

Happy babies!

The best thing that happened this weekend. I now know what to get my sweet little niece for her first birthday. She loved the Fisher Price Little People, so I have already told everyone that we are getting her some of those.
