Hosting a HEXBUG Party

Hexbug logo

Did you ever look at a toy and wonder how it would keep the attention of a child? That was my initial reaction of Hexbugs. They looked cute and seemed like fun, but how would they keep hold up to my kids and our neighbors? Let me cut to the chase here, my boys and the neighbors were outside playing with the Hexbugs for over four hours! Yes, you read that right. On a nice fall day, the Hexbugs kept them engaged for the entire time.

HEXBUG varieties

Thanks to Mom Select, we were selected to host a Hexbug Nano Party. They sent us enough Hexbug Nano for each child to have three to keep. In addition to this, we received the Nano Bridge BattleHabitat Set, Nano Habitat Set, and a myrid of extra Hex Cells, Straight/Curved Bridges, batteries and more. We seriously had everything to create the ultimate Hexbug Nano celebration.

HEXBUG Nano Habitats

So you may be asking yourself, what is a HEXBUG? Here is a quick explanation:

About the Nano

Basically, HEXBUGS are mini-robotic bugs without the ick factor. Yes, these are MY kind of bug. Ones that will not bite, damange items or cost me money to hire an exterminator. In addition to this, kids (and/or adults) can register their HEXBUG online to track their collection, play games, learn about real science. We have not had a chance to do this yet, but NHL (7) is anxious to see what it is all about.

As we were setting up the pieces for the party, we noticed something immediately. The Hex Cells and bridge pieces were easy to connect. Seriously, our 7 year old had no issue, and even the 3 year old was almost able to do it alone. The other part we liked was that the small moveable pieces on the hex cells were attached. In other words, no little pieces floating around if you were connecting parts.

Setting up HEXBUG Nano Habitat

Then we took the Battle Bridge, extra habitat, hex cells and bridge pieces outside. While we waited for the neighbors to arrive, NHL and JSL set their HEXBUGS up to battle. Here is a video.

Then the neighbors started to arrive. The kids had a blast making up stories about their HEXBUG habitat. The battle zone was above a mall, the Hidden Mickey within, was the house for the girl HEXBUG population. It was hilarious to watch them play for hours.  Here are just a few of the photos that captured our outdoor HEXBUG party.

HEXBUG Fun

Since I mentioned it before, here is our own version of the Hidden Mickey in our HEXBUG Nano Habitat!

See who came to play

The kids really did have a great time. Just listen to the excitement as the bugs raced around their habitat:

Oh, if you think the HEXBUGS are just for boys. Think again. Check out the littel area of the HEXBUG Nano habitat that our neighbor made – pretty creative if you ask me.

Adding extras in

I know the kids look forward to playing outside together again with all of their HEXBUG Nano critters one day soon. A huge thank you to Mom Select and HEXBUG for making this possible. We will definitely be purchasing more HEXBUG products this holiday season to give away to family and friends.

Bouncing with my boys

Dear NHL & JSL,

Today was a fantastic day. We were with a lot of family for cousin SG’s birthday party. This morning, they delivered a castle bounce house. The two of you were mesmerized. Many hours were spent in the bounce house and running/playing with everyone here. Of course, my memories will be when I spent time in the castle being silly with both of you and Daddy. Lots of great photos from there, but right now I am too tired to put them here. For now here is one of JSL dragging me out of the bouncer to go to the slide.

Bounce time

Thank you both for being silly, laughing, jumping and playing while making family memories with us today.

Love,

Mommy

1000 times NO

This has to be the funniest kids’ shorts that we have seen in a while. Love it so much that I had to share.

JSL is addicted to it and wants to see it over and over and over again. Now, I want to get the book that it is based on a book by Mr. Warburton to see what it is all about (FYI – this short was on Nick Jr).

So what do you think? Will my kids now learn how to say NO in multiple languages?

Tuesday Tales – Chicken Cheeks

Tuesday Tales

I will be the first to admit it. I enjoy books that are clever and make you laugh. As a teacher with a science background, I can even handle ones that use a little bathroom humor and/or items about body functions. I am a firm believer that we need to get children to read and why not learn about things in a fun manner.

One of NHL’s favorite books, when he was about JSL’s age (3), was Everyone Poops. He thought it was amazing and wanted everyone to read it to him. Thankfully, he expanded his horizons into many other books since that time. The other day, we all went to the library together. NHL and I immediately stopped at the new book cart. We picked up a lot of interesting titles that we have been reading. As a second grader, NHL is asked to read 100 books by the end of the school year. He did well over 200 last year since he enjoys reading so much.

While we were busy in the new book section, TechyDad and JSL were looking in another area. When I went over to them, TechyDad proclaimed that he had a book that Papa had to read to the boys. Here it is:

Chicken Cheeks

Yes, Chicken Cheeks by comedian Michael Ian Black has the subject matter that you think by looking at the front and back cover of the book. Page after page of fun and new ways to describe posterior parts of animals. Nothing inappropriate for kids and gets you thinking and giggling, of course. I could certainly see using this as a spring board for a lesson on synonyms. This book alone gives you countless options for your child to use rather than butt! The other part that makes the book even more special are the amazing illustrations by Kevin Hawkes.

More about Chicken Cheeks:

Some bears will go to any length to get some honey. This one recruits every animal that comes along to form, well, a stack. The result? Tail of the duck to the gluteus maximus of the duck-billed platypus (with many other rears in between). Readers will giggle with delight at the bird’s eye view of some hysterical animal bottoms. Follow this back-sided journey up the tree – where the real surprise awaits. The pairing of Black’s minimal text with Hawkes’s visual story line will keep you chuckling from the bottom up.

Chicken Cheeks – Written by Michael Ian Black – Illustrated by Kevin Hawkes – Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing – Published January 2009 – ISBN 978-1-4169-4864-3 – 40 pages – Ages 3-7

A view inside Chicken Cheeks

Although this book may not be everyones taste, we really enjoyed it. Sometimes, just having a fun book that makes you laugh as a family is well worth it. Thank you to Chicken Cheeks for a fun read along with Papa!

So what have you read recently? Please be sure to link up to your Tuesday Tales and/or leave a comment below. Include something you read on your own, with a child or someone else. Tuesday Tales are all about spreading the love for books.

New word – Swag

Dear JSL,

Last Sunday, Daddy and I came home from our weekend away in NYC at BlogHer. You had a fabulous time with Nana and Papa. You went to the local amusement park, a science museum and to see Toy Story 3 again. I actually think you thought twice about coming home. Then we opened up a bag with some new items in it. That was the moment that you learned a new word – SWAG.

My Swag Kid

Yes, at three you probably assume that is we go away Swag will follow us home. Thank goodness you were so amused with the fabulous Swiper shirt from the people at Nick Jr. that we hid some items away for another time.

Love,

Mommy
