Teacher gifts 2009

This year I had a dilemma. NHL was in a multi-teacher classroom. There was a regular education teacher, special education teacher and two aids in the room. Obviously, I could not afford to get them all something big and exciting. In December I organized a collection of money for gift cards to give each of the teachers in the room. Once again several of the parents expressed a desire to do this, so I agreed to send out a note. Only a handfull of people sent money in, so I purchased each of the teachers a gift card to a book store where there is a myriad of possible items to purchase. As a a teacher I loved giftcards that allowed me to buy something special that I may not have otherwise purchased.

In addition to these adults,  NHL has PT and OT where I wanted to thank them for all that they have done. I wrote in NHL’s communication log asking for the six adults to tell me their favorite colors. My plan was to knit them some wash cloths to have. Something a little more personal. In addition to this, I went and bought them some notecards and mini-notebooks for their purses. Here are some photos of what I purchased for them.

This is how I wrapped them to send in with NHL:

All gifts ready to go

In addition to this, I bought the school nurse a gift card for some coffee. She went out of her way helping us with allergy and pinkeye issues throughout the year. What I did not do was purchase/make anything for NHL’s Music/Art/PE teachers or the librarian. As wonderful as they are, there has to be a line and that was mine this year.

So my question to you this week:

What do you usually do for teachers? Do you give something to all of the individuals that work with your child/children, or only certain teachers?

Crafty creations

It has been a stressful week here in Angel Land. Some of the culprits include:

  • Room parent phone calls – Managed to get people to bring in napins, cups and juice. Nobody wants to do cupcakes, so it looks like I shall do that next week to send in on Friday.
  • Bird fiasco on Wednesday – So many things I wanted to get done were not able to get accomplished since I was waiting for return phone calls.
  • NHL’s allergies have been out of control – I feel helpless and wish there was something more I can do for him. Several medicine changes have been made and we are hoping one of them works. So afraid of another Singulair situation taking control of my child.
  • Finalizing plans for Disney World – The only reason this was slightly stressful was thanks to Disney not posting their hours in a timely fashion. This weekend we are able to make our dining reservations, so today/tomorrow we will finalize those items.

Thanks to all of this, I was exhausted at night and never did anything special for my 2 year Blogoversary. Oh well, I can figure that out for next week perhaps. Hmmm. . . . .

When the boys are in bed I have been knitting again. It is something that is mindless and works well to take my attention away from the stress at hand. Of course, I have been stuck making the same knitted cloth for a while. I now have well over 25 of them (need a cloth anyone?). Here are a few:

Lots of colors

One of these days I will break out of my shell and make something different. For now these are quick and easy and satisfy my need for knitting. I may try a pair of mittens soon, my friend is supposed to give me a great pattern to try on straight needles.

So here is my question to you this week:

What type of craft activity do you like to do? When did you start doing this and why do you enjoy it?

Finding time to read

Now that the cooler weather is here reading just seem like a better choice to do at night before bed. It is harder to curl up under a blanket to knit items like these that I sent off as part of my bloggy giveaway earlier this month.

Recently made DW cloths

No matter what you do, bamboo knitting needles and heavy blankets just do not mix. Sure, I could bring my laptop into bed and do some blogging. Still the laptop is not easy to maneuver and type with when hidden under a mountain of blankets to keep warm.

There is just something about snuggling up under a blanket and reading a great book at night when the weather is cold. Last week I read Mia King’s novel called Sweet Life. The story starts off in NYC and is about a couple that moves to Hawaii. Sounds wonderful to me now that the daytime high is only going to reach 30 degrees most days. The main character quickly finds that paradise is not an automatic thing, even in Hawaii. Marissa Price (the main character) and her husband struggle with the changes in their life and marriage. With great woman friends supporting her,  Marissa is able to settle into life in paradise and eventually fix items in her personal life as well. I really enjoyed the cast of characters in this novel. King does a fabulous job establishing them quickly into the life of Marissa Price.

Thanks to the bloggy world I heard about this wonderful book from many different people and went to get a copy to read. I enjoyed it so much that I went out to get King’s first novel Good Things. I hope to snuggle up under my blanket tonight to get started on this soon.

What books are you reading right now? I could always use more suggestions for this long winter that is ahead of us. Happy reading!
