Saturday Surprise at Home Depot Thanks to the Ice

Dear NHL and JSL,

This morning we decided that we had to head to Home Depot to get some calcium chloride to put on the ice dams. Daddy and I heard that if we put that into some panty hose, that it would help to make channels for the melting mess. Our hope is that this project will help us avoid water coming into our bedrooms.

As we pulled into Home Depot parking lot, we realized it was the first Saturday of the month. That is when they do the Kids Workshop projects set up. After we grabbed 50 pounds of calcium chloride, I took NHL to check out what the project was.

Project for today

We started the project together, then Daddy helped JSL to get started. You both enjoyed doing this and decorating it when you were finished.

Working on projects

Luckily the project did not take a long time, so we were back home to set up what we hope will prevent the roof from leaking in. Here are your finished projects at home.

Finished Heart Shelf Project

Now we are keeping busy by cleaning the room upstairs. Both of you are so excited to have this space for a playroom. Hopefully we can work together as a team to get this going and finished soon.

Love,

Mommy

Time For a Little Chuck E

Dear NHL & JSL,

This afternoon we went to Chuck E. Cheese. It has been a long time since we went there. As a family, we tried to go there when visiting Bubbe and Grandpa (January 2008), but it did not go too well. JSL’s last visit to the one near here was in April 2009, before he turned two. You are quite a lot bigger now:

Since JSL was invited to a friend’s fourth birthday party, we asked NHL if he wanted to go and play. Much to our surprise, you said yes, so we all went. It can be a bit overwhelming there, but you both had a great time. NHL, you went off and played with Daddy and had a blast winning tickets. You loved surprising me with your mega win. JSL kept clapping every time he got a ticket. It was so cute to watch. JSL, you are still not a fan of the Chuck E Cheese character, but you coped when he was around.

My favorite part of the day is the drawings that each of you had made with Daddy. Here they are:

Thank you for a day of fun and happy memories together.

Love,

Mommy

Heat is a Wonderful Thing

This morning, when I woke up and got out of bed I was freezing. Nothing too alarming really, we keep the house at 63 degrees, and we just got 13 inches of snow yesterday. Here you can see what it looked like before it stopped:

It’s not rocket science, we know it’s cold. When I got NHL up, he went to the couch and complained he was freezing. This is where a red alert should have happened. NHL is never cold unless he is sick, and (*KNOCK ON WOOD*) he is not sick yet. I went over to the thermostat and clicked it up two degrees and walked away.

More SnowDid you notice I forgot to do something?

About an hour later I was shivering with JSL in my room. He just woke up and I had to take his temperature. I went to check the heat since the radiators were ice cold.

55 degrees! Uh, Houston we have a problem! I called TechyDad in a panic. I went downstairs and did not see the pilot light on. He talked to his boss, got permission to come home and help me.

After several attempts to keep the pilot lit, it failed horribly. TechyDad went to Home Depot to pick up a thermal coupler. He had replaced this a little over a year ago, so we tried that. It seemed to work at first, but just before heading back to work he went down to check. Nada was lit again. No heat coming out. *sigh*

TechyDad checking things outAt this point, my father came to my rescue and called a Heating/Plumbing place to call me back. They heard we were at 55 degrees with a sick kid and came in less than two hours. To make a long story short – we have heat! The gentleman here  also realized the idiots that put in our system (contractor hired them – not us) when we moved in had something that was making us waste money. He fixed that and we handed over a check with heat flowing out of our radiators.

Immediately afterward, I called S. C. BASS Plumbing to thank them for coming so quickly. Then I made an appointment to have our heating system cleaned.

So excuse me now – I am off to enjoy something I took for granted while taking care of my sick little guy.
