A Cow-Duck

Admit it, you are curious what a cow-duck is. Or perhaps you are frightened to find out. Either way, there is nothing to worry about. A cow-duck is a creation made my my little guy. A little over a year ago JSL received the Leap Frog Fridge Farm Magnetic Animal Set.

At first JSL just liked to look at it on the refridgerator. Then he thought it was neat to take the magnets on and off and run around the house with them. Recently, he finally figured out how to get the toy to make music. He now can make new animals and listen to funny songs.

The little guy will often just stand there for long periods of time playing with toy. He sings and dances to the original tunes that the toy plays. The other day I decided to capture him quietly singing along. Here he is:

As you can see it is very interactive and he enjoys it a lot. It will keep him busy in the kitchen while JL or I are working in there. Of course there is a small down side. After listening to the same song a dozen or more time in a row, it does get on the parental nerves a tad. Now if only we could get JSL to make something beside the cow-duck to change up the song for a little while.

The trouble with word families

All of my years of teaching and being in a classroom have taught me that no child is always an angel. My kids are no exception to the rule. The only real angels here are those made in the snow.

Snow angel time

NHL makes a great snow angel, but he still know how to get into plenty of mischief.

Trying to be an angel

So why am I bringing this up?

Yesterday, when I was picking NHL up from school his teacher pulled him aside and told him to wait since she wanted to talk to me. Of course like every parent, my heart immediately went to my toes and I wondered what had happened. After all of the other kids were gone she explained things to me.

The class was working on some more word families. For those of you unfamiliar with this term,  word families are group of rhyming words that have a common ending to them. An example:  the "at" family:  hat, cat, sat, mat. . . and so on.

The word family that the class was working on yesterday was the "it" family. Can you see where this is going?! As soon as she said it, I knew what NHL had done.

Apparently, NHL was excited to rhyme and went ahead of the class. He added words to the family and sure as, well the word in question, he added the sh to the end sound and formed a familiar adult word. NHL’s teachers said he wrote it on the board when he was told not to. He was so excited to share.

You may think, wow why didn’t he stop? The thing is he was not trying to be disrespectful, he really was naive and had no clue about said word. Sure he probably has heard it coming from a mouth or two in the family (not hubby’s), but he has never used it or said anything. Once the teachers talked with him about why the word was not acceptable he stopped. Since they realized he had no clue, they did not give him a warning for his so called actions.

The parent in me laughed and thought it was funny. At the same time, the teacher in me knew that other kids were probably howling and laughing at the word my naive child had created. It immediately made me recall when I was student teaching in first grade and doing short u words with the kids. I was being observed and was using the word "duck" to rhyme. You best believe that I carefully selected kids to answer so I did not get the wrong -uck word!  Of course nobody could have prepared me for little Z who came up with his own short u word. He said "butt" and would not stop. He was chanting "butt" and made up a little "butt" song. From that moment on Z was forever known as "butt boy" in my eyes.  Ah, the joys of kids and teaching!

My kindergarten kid

This has taught me that I  need to cherish these moments. Before I know it, my naive kindergarten kid is going to be gone and he will soon learn more street smart items from his classmates and world.

Delurking time – 2009

I am a day late and a dollar short.

Time to leave a comment and show some love

Yesterday was Delurking Day 2009. That is the day when bloggers ask those reading to leave a comment to let us know that you are really out there.

Admit it, you probably read my blog and others, but do not always leave a comment. I know I am guilty of this. There are often blog posts that I want to leave a comment on, but something happens and well you know.

One of my goals this year is to be better about leaving comments on the blogs that I read. I am still working on this. As a blogger I know how nice it is to have comments to read after writing a post. Sure, I am not writing for the comments, but it sure makes me smile and feel special to know that people are reading.

So let’s keep this delurking thing going. Leave me a comment telling me something that you like to do when you have a little extra time or leave me a question. I promise to visit your blog and comment in return (if you have one) and will also e-mail you back. As many of you know, I always reply to my e-mail comments.

Facebook/Nursing photo controversy

Breastfeeding is a touchy subject with a lot of people. Of course, there are many reasons that factor into this. Ask one person what they think of public nursing and you never know what answer you may get.

Right now, there is a rather large controversy going on with woman who posted photos of themselves nursing their child/children within Facebook. According to Facebook’s terms of service, these photos are not allowed because they may show the nipple/aerola area of the breast. Groups have been formed all over the internet (on and off Facebook) and many bloggers have weighed in on the subject.

One of the people that has blogged about this happens to be TechyDad. Over the last several days, he has been working on a blog post called The Facebook/Breastfeeding Controversy: A Dad’s Perspective.  I must admit I was most impressed with the research that TechyDad did when writing this post. I am not simply saying this because he is my husband either. In reading the blog post, I learned a lot of new information. Head on over if you are unaware of the history and would like additional blogs to check out on the subject.

My question for you:

Should Facebook stop women from posting photos of themselves nursing, yet scantily clothed women in bikinis be allowed to bare nearly all? Please let me know what you think.

My answer:  Although I would not personally post photos of myself nursing online, I feel that the application of the terms of service set by Facebook is wrong. Implying that photos of a woman nursing or the act of breastfeeding is sexual is unjustified. Feeding your child is the most natural act and lumping it with sexually explicit photos is ridiculous.
