Tie Buddies – Review & Giveaway

As adults, we often take simple things in life for granted. One example of this is being able to tie our own shoes. Now it seems like second nature, so easy to do. However, I still remember trying to learn to tie my shoes when I was little. My mother tried everything to assist me, but nothing worked. That was until my best friend from across the street came over. She taught me to make two "bunny ears" and voila . . . my shoes were tied.

My oldest son, NHL, is five years old. As he has grown up, we have predominantly bought him shoes that have velcro on them. Some of this was for the pure ease of it, another was to allow him to be more independent. NHL has low muscle tone. Due to this his fine motor skills are not quite up to par. With occupational therapy, he has gained a lot of skills, especially in writing.

Recently I wrote a note to NHL’s therapist asking her about tips to help him tie his own shoes. She sent some great poems to use with him. Still, I had no real idea of how to assist him. Each time I tried to show the "bunny ear" approach it was just too much for NHL to do.

Thanks to The Family Review Network, I had the opportunity to try a product called Tie BuddiesTM

 Tie Buddies

Facts about Tie Buddies:

Tie Buddies were invented by Wendy Welling, a mother, in 2007. She was trying to come up with a way to assist her children to tie their shoes independently. From the website:

Tying your shoes is a small but essential skill, one you use for the rest of your life. Help your little one learn faster with Tie BuddiesTM. These cute, kid-friendly devices act as easy pull-tabs for small hands, taking messy loops out of the equation. The happy characters make a game of it, resulting in a strong knot and even stronger recall.
The simple developmental hurdle of shoe tying affects millions of parents and children daily. For many years, shoe tying has been a point of frustration for both parents and children. With 1slip-ons and hook-and-loop closures, children and parents have postponed the learning of tying shoes. Tie Buddies® is a mom-invented product that came
about from wanting to give my daughters independence, build their confidence and have fun learning. By eliminating loops, Tie Buddies® eliminate the confusion of multiple "holes" where the laces can pass through. There is no other product that stays on the child’s shoe giving them independence while re-enforcing the learning process.

  • You place the Tie Buddies on the laces of your child’s shoes in one easy step
  • Instructions to assist your child with a story to tie their laces in eight steps are included on the back of the Tie Buddies.
  • A demonstration of Tie Buddies is available on their website.
  • Currently available in two designs: Fairy and Magic Wand (for girls) and Red and Green Race Cars (for boys)
  • Each package includes four Tie Buddies at $7.95 for one pair of shoes.
  • Patent is pending on the design for this shoe tying tool.

Our Review of Tie Buddies:

NHL has been very reluctant to learn to tie his shoes. He would rather not spend the time and gets easily frustrated. When I heard about Tie Buddies, I asked NHL’s Occupational Therapist about them. She told me that she had been hearing a lot about them, but had never actually tried them. We were intrigued and hoped that they would assist NHL with this milestone.

When the package arrived, NHL was very excited to see what they were. I was able to place the Tie Buddies on his shoelaces with no problem. Then it was time to test them out. I modeled on one shoe as he followed along. Unlike previous attempts to learn how to tie his laces, he did not scream and yell. He was genuinely interested in what the Tie Buddies would do. He was able to easily grasp them and with practice has been getting much better with them.

NHL was shy and would not allow me to take his photos while working with this. He really seemed to like the fact that the Tie Buddies made things so much easier with the "bunny ear" formation. He did not have to do too many steps and can follow along. With more practice, he will likely be able to add this to his milestones. It will probably be a little time before we will be able to take the Tie Buddies off, since they honestly do assist him so much.

We will definitely be recommending these to all of NHL’s kindergarten friends that are still learning to tie shoes. They take the guess work out of the process for the parent, and make it a fun experience for the kids.

A Chance for you to win!

Thanks to Tie Buddies, 1 lucky winner (US Residents only) will have a chance to win their own package of Tie Buddies.

100th Day of Kindergarten

If you are a parent of an elementary school child you have probably done a project for the 100th day of school in recent days. Prior to winter break, NHL came home with an assignment to make something to bring in for the 100th Day of school. The instructions were simple. The project had to contain 100 of an item in a creative way. Not too hard and something we could easily do over the vacation time at home.

We went to the local craft store and showed NHL different options to use for the 100 items. He immediately wanted to use googlie eyes. We gave him the choice of a few different types that would work nicely. He selected flaming neon colored eyes. Then we looked at some options to put the eyes on. The store had a lot of fun foam shapes. One of them looked like a megaphone. it was a great shape and large enough to hold 100 eyes on it. NHL liked the idea. So we selected a black one to contrast the neon colors and picked up some double sided crafting tape to put the eye balls on. Gluing 100 of those little guys seemed like overkill.

Saturday morning we sat down at the dining room table. NHL counted out 100 eyes from the packages. He did groups of 10 and then told me he was finished. At that point he handed them to me to cut pieces of the sticker like tape. Once that was done he placed them all over the foam shape. When we were finished NHL liked the idea of adding the number 100 and his name and 2009 on the foam with fabric paint. I helped him with this and we set it to dry.

Here is what it looked like when finished:

100 Day project 2009

The project went into school Monday, but they share it with the class today. This is actually their 100th day of school when you factor in vacation and snow/ice days. They will have a celebration during the day. In addition to this the entire school is having an assembly that parents were invited to. The assembly is to celebrate Black History Month. NHL’s kidergarten class will be doing a little "play" about Mae Jemison who was the first African American woman into space. He had a pretty big line to memorize and is all set. Nana, JSL and I will be heading there this morning to watch.

So what have you done for 100th day of school projects with your child/children?

Ever changing TOS on Facebook

How would you feel if you were a member of an online service and they changed the TOS (Terms of Service) without notifying you? This is exactly what Facebook pulled once again. We all know the controversy behind their view of photos of nursing mothers, but this will impact even more people.

In the past, when you signed up for Facebook, you basically gave them the rights to use your content. This relationship of sorts ended if you opted to delete your Facebook account, no questions asked. With a sneaky move, Facebook changed their TOS to now state that they can use your content even if you close/delete the account . The worst part, they note that they may even sublicence your content. So basically any blog posts, notes, and most importantly photo rights are lost the minute you put them onto Facebook (at least according to their jargon). If you are still unsure of what the ramifications mean, TechyDad wrote a great post about the latest with a link to an article on The Consumerist.

The fall out from this BIG change in TOS without notifying members was a hot topic on Twitter most of yesterday. Blog writers were scrambling to figure out what it means to them. Many bloggers have their RSS feeds put right into Facebook. So does this mean that Facebook now claims it as their work? Slippery slope if you ask me. Many bloggers were joining groups and writing to Facebook, as well as deleting their content from their pages. The fall out will once again be interesting to watch as Facebook meets the fury of the blogosphere.

What do you think about the latest Facebook controversy? If you are a blogger and use Facebook will you change how you post items there?

Manifest Your Magnificence

Growing up in the world today is tough thanks to the society we live in. As parents, we want to do everything to help our children to succeed. One of the most important items we need to assist our children with is their self-esteem. Simply telling your child that you love them, and teaching them academics is not enough. It is more important than ever to help children to believe in who they are and what they can be.

Once your child enters school, the safe cocoon that you have given them is forever exposed to the realities of life. Other children will often tell them they can not do things, or that they are doing something wrong. If a child hears this too often they will quickly believe it to be the truth. I learned this last year when my son went off to preschool, and even more so this year with kindergarten. Prior to kindergarten NHL rarely uttered the words "I can’t" and then they became a daily occurance.

I recently received a new product called Manifest Your Magnificence that was created by Susan T Howson. I selected the set of 64 affirmation cards that you can use to help strengthen your child’s self-esteem.  Each of the cards has an "I am" statement on the front coupled with a gorgeous kid friendly illustration. On the back of the card is an example of what the statement may mean to an individual.

I am positive

The cards are meant for children that are 6-12 years old. I used them with my five year old son. He loved looking through the cheerful cards to see what they had to say. We would sit down and read them together. Some days we would go back and forth thinking of items that related to the affirmation in front of us. Other days it was a perfect chance to let him practice writing. He would simply write a few words and draw a picture to make his own creation to go along with that card. NHL wants to make his own "book" with the writings that he made using the cards as inspiration. He knows that he can be an author and is not using "can’t" as often these days. The possibilities with the Manifest Your Magnificence cards are truly endless. Howson suggests using them to write, talk, draw, sing, act, dance, or to carry around to remind them of who they really are.

 I am a genius

As an educator, I know that I could have used these in many ways within my classroom. I would have loved them as pre-writing prompts for my students to do as they came into my room. I would have had them waiting on their desks to work on while I went around checking in assignments. Not only would the cards get them writing, but it would make them think about who they are and what they can be. With later elementary and early middle school students, finding their identity can be tricky and this would definitely assist them in their journey. Thanks to the sturdy stock that the cards are made on, I know that they would hold up well within an academic setting. The convenient gift box that they come in would store nicely right in or on my desk.

I am unique

The set of 64 affirmation cards may be purchased directly from Magnificent Creations Limitee. The cost of the set is $25.95 + shipping from their company in Canada.

Thank you to  Susan T Howson and the Family Review Network for this wonderful review opportunity.
