Halloween after being sick

Dear NHL,

To say that you are going stir crazy would be an understatement. You have been home sick since after school Monday afternoon. It all started with a headache and fever. Then you added the cough, thanks to your asthma. You were so miserable and had a tough time keeping medicine down with all of the gagging from the cough.

Very sick kidd

Thursday you were starting to feel better. You were a huge helper when I asked you to get the door for the emergency crew coming to the house for your little brother. Here you are this morning with a mischievous twinkle in your eyes (much nicer than the feverish look).

Feeling much better

I know it had to be a tough week for you. You were upset about missing first grade, especially your calendar job this week and the Pumpkin Picking trip. Thank goodness you are feeling better. Tonight you will probably put your costume on and go to see Nana and Papa and visit a few neighbors on our block. Hopefully next year will be a bit more fun, we just need to stay healthy.

 Love,

Mommy

Dear JSL,

Tonight is going to be hard for you. You remember going trick-or-treating last year and you can not go tonight. Thursday you gave me another big scare in my life. I held you in my arms when you were turning blue and barely breathing. You had your fourth febrile seizure while we were home alone with your big brother. The time after that as we made our way to the ER are all a blur.

Tired yet still wants to color Trying to cool off some

Today you have gone without fever medicine since early this morning and so far so good. Thanks to this we left you go outside in front of the house for some fresh air this afternoon.

Outside for fresh air

We still have no real answers about why you had such a high fever. My sweet little monkey, it just seems like we are going to have to be on top of fevers a little more since your poor little body does not know how to deal with extremes.

Love,

Mommy

Boy Halloween costume ideas

Thursday I was out shopping with the little guy and stumbled onto some fun Halloween items. Here is a little something I bought to put on our front porch.

A little something new

All of the Halloween things gave me a major reality check. With just over a month to go until Halloween, I realized that we really need to get our rear in gear. I do not think that NHL’s costume from last year will fit him again. JSL will probably recycle NHL’s costume from when he was little. Not going to ruin that, but it will be very fitting after our Disney World adventure on his birthday. Here are the boys last Halloween.

My little doctor     My little mouse

When we buy something for the boys we try to make that that we can use it not only for Halloween, but also for Purim in the spring. This can get tricky since the climate can be quite different during these times.

The biggest problem for NHL is finding something that is appropriate for a six year old boy in first grade. Nothing too cute, nothing bloody/scary/gross . . . oh and it can not cost a ton of money (JL and I draw the line there). I am creative, but do not have a sewing machine.

This week I have two quick question for you:

Do you have any suggestions for a Halloween costume for my six year old son?  and What was your favorite costume as a child?

Challah, apples and lots of honey – Rosh Hashana 2009/5770

The boys and I went to my parents house for dinner Saturday evening to celebrate Rosh Hashana together. Shhh. . . don’t tell anyone that I took photos, but I did.

Before we sat down the eat, the boys played for a little while. They had fun running around. The little guy was not as thanks to a nap after his meltdown at temple. NHL and JSL had a lot of jump tackling Daddy on the ground.

Play time

Soon it was time to sit down at the table to eat. Here is a look at everything that we had from start to finish:

Foods for our meal

1. Almost ready to eat, 2. Round challah with raisins, 3. Delicious chicken, 4. Green beans, 5. Corn and couscous, 6. Apple turnover  Not pictured are the rainbow cookies that I splurged and bought. They were eaten rather quickly.

The boys both had fun dipping their apples in honey. JSL was a little confused about the sticky "dip-dip" as he calls it.

Apples and dip-dip

NHL was enjoying his honey so much, that he opted to have some challah with the sweetness on top as well.

We all enjoyed our meal, dessert and then it was time to head home. Nana requested a photo of the two boys with the shorts that they had given them. Do you think the boys were willing subjects?  Here are two photos to answer this question.

Exhibit 2:

Hugs for the little guy

Did you really expect anything different?!  Oh well, we tried.

Next up is Yom Kippur on Monday. We will have to see whether the little guy and I head to services. These long days in temple are tough for him with nap time and not being able to settle there.

Summer 2009 be gone – welcome Fall

It seems like summer just started a few days ago. The warm sunny days are already turning into cool crisp nights and chilly mornings in our neck of the woods. This weekend marks the official start of Fall. Pretty fitting since tomorrow at sundown also begins Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year. To all of my family and friends, Shana Tova. I wish a sweet and happy new year to each and every one of you. This weekend the boys and I will celebrate by eating apples and honey – YUM!

So my question to you this week is inspired by the change of seasons:

What will you miss most about summer and what are you looking forward to as we head into autumn?

Calendar holiday happenings

As a former teacher,  I still use an Academic calendar. I finally made my September 2009 to September 2010 calendar to fill in important dates. First I put in family/friend birthdays, anniversaries and the like. Next, I put in the secular holidays. After that, it was time to place the Jewish holidays in and incorporate the school district calendar for NHL.

This year the High Holidays are in September and October and aside from Yom Kippur,  all fall on the weekend. Although this means we will not be able to go to Six Flags during those weekends, it does mean that hubby will not need to take time off for Rosh Hashana (2 days), Sukkot (2 days), Shmini Atzeret (1 day) and Simchat Torah (1 day). This is huge in my mind. Of course, in noting this I was aware that next year would likely be a lot different.

As I went through December, I saw Chanukah starts in mid-December  on the 11th (miss all the big Christmas sales again). Then I noticed that Purim was February 28. Oy! I knew at that moment it was not a good sign. Sure enough the Passover seders are Monday-Tuesday March 29-30. To put that into perspective, Easter is the following Sunday on April 4th. This means that JL will need to take off 5 days from work for Pessach. Fast forward to May and two days mid week for Shavuot.

Then, it was back to the High Holidays of 2010. Everything is during the week, except Yom Kippur which is a Saturday and my sister-in-law’s birthday. Everything is between September 9th and October 1st. I joked with JL that Chanukah would likely be in November given the early holidays. I was not far off. Next year, in 2010, Chanukah begins December 1st and we will light the last candle on my birthday.

So, if you are keeping track with me:  That is 13 holidays that my hubby takes off  of work because of his beliefs. Another item I realized is that NHL will miss his first day of Hebrew school. We have a family function that weekend. Since the Jewish holidays this year are all Saturday/Sunday combination, it means he will not have his first day until October 18th. Oy!
