Chanukah Toy Happenings

As a child, there were not too many toys that were specifically for Chanukah. This certainly did not help when battling the why about not celebrating Christmas like most of my friends. We really only had dreidels to play with and menorahs to light. The world sure has changed and my kids have been lucky to benefit from this. Not only are there great decorations, products, music, there are toys specifically to help kids learn about the Festival of Lights.

I thought it would be fun to share some of the new items that we have seen in recent years. One that I wish we owned is the Little People Chanukah play set. I adore this set and JSL seems to like it when he sees it at nursery school.

Little People Chanukah

Another set is a favorite of ours and we do own it. A family friend gave the boys the KidKraft Wooden Chanukah Set. The set includes a menorah, candles, flames, dreidels, a fry pan, latkes, and Chanukah gelt. Talk about a safe and fun way to let your child light their own menorah.

I have to admit that I am not sure if the Chanukah lacing cards were made by JSL’s school, or bought. Either way, I love that they had a fun center to work on fine motor skills with the kids.

As someone that loves to incorporate arts and crafts into holidays, I was thrilled to see something new and different. Dreidel Shaped Chanukah Crayonswhich were perfect for making Chanukah drawings and more.

These are certainly not the only Chanukah themed items out there, just a few examples that I have seen in recent weeks. Have you seen something new and exciting? If you have I would love to know about it in the comments below.

Why Don’t We Celebrate Christmas?

As a Jewish mother, I always wondered when my children would start to ask questions about the holidays. More specifically, I was curious if they would ask why we did not celebrate Christmas.

IMG_1025As a child growing up, my friends were always jealous of me. They thought it was so much fun since Chanukah was celebrated for eight days. Eight times the presents is likely what they thought! From time to time, they would come over and light our menorah with us. It was also a lot of fun playing the dreidel game with piles of M&Ms for everyone.

My parents have always put up decorations for the Festival of Lights. When in elementary school, I was also the child that refused to complete art projects that had to do with Christmas. I was not being disrespectful, quite the opposite. I was proud of my Jewish roots and wanted to make something special for my family and our holiday. Still, I must admit I always thought it was so neat to decorate a Christmas tree and go caroling (which I often did with my neighborhood best friend)

NHL is eight and now seems to be mostly unfazed with the constant reminders of Christmas when out and about. He understands that the majority of his friends at school celebrate this day with their families and we do not. Of course, three years ago this was not the case. While in kindergarten, NHL asked my husband and me why we did not celebrate Christmas. We told him that we are Jewish and because of this we do not celebrate. At the time, he seemed to accept that, but days later we realized it was not the case.

While wandering around one of the malls, NHL asked to go into where Santa was sitting. It looked like fun and he wanted to be able to check it out. We explained to him that we are Jewish and do not get photos with Santa. The string of why questions that resulted floored us. NHL was observant and saw that Christmas decorations were in every store, around the homes outside, and songs for the holiday were playing constantly.

IMG_0728_thumbWhen at school, there were children that tried to tell NHL that Christmas was better than Chanukah. My heart sank for my son. Being in the minority this time of year is rough for children. I wanted to shield him from this. I asked what he said. My smart little boy said that Christmas and Chanukah were both special. He told the other child that he liked Chanukah because we light our menorah, sing songs, eat with our family, and get some presents.

To help, most years I ask NHL’s teachers if I can send in some dreidels and chocolate to play the dreidel game, along with some fun new Chanukah music. I think it is important that NHL shares his traditions with his classmates. Once again, I plan to do this with NHL’s third grade class. His new classmates need to hear how we celebrate Chanukah to expand their understanding of others.

What I was not expecting came from my four year old. JSL is constantly talking about Santa. He’s obsessed with chatter about the jolly fellow and wants to know why he can’t see him, why he isn’t coming to our house, and on and on. The nice thing this time around, big brother NHL reminds him about our Jewish faith and will often read him a Chanukah book to settle down the list of Christmas whys.

Do you talk to your children about different holidays that are celebrated during this season and beyond?

Latkes and a Slew of Scarves

On Sunday, we had an early Chanukah celebration with my brother’s family, my parents, my grandmother (Mimi), Aunt S, and Uncle M. There were Latkes made from scratch thanks to Mimi and Aunt M.Latke making time

Uncle I even made eggplant burgers into a really delicious eggplant parm creation. These will definitely be something that TechyDad and I try again at our house.

IMGP4094

When everyone was filled up from lunch it was time for the kids to open Chanukah presents. When we inquired about items that the kids could use for presents, I was asked to make the kids a scarf. Before I could start their scarves, I had to finish one that was on my needles for me. Almost finished here and debating the length.

Scarf Check

Then, I went to the store and picked out yarn for Cousin SG and BA. With some guidance on color selection from Aunt M, I was able to get two that worked with their new winter jackets.

Chanukah Scarves

I love the way they came out and am sure they will keep the kids nice and warm this winter. Of course, since these were finished I started another scarf for NHL, made one for Snowflake, and have a scarf request for Clumsy. Then, it will be time to get working on a baby blanket since the yarn I ordered came in.

Are you making any presents for this holiday season? I would love to know what crafty things you are working on.

Chanukah Fever with Mama Doni – Giveaway

Growing up, we had one main song that we heard for Chanukah. It was the dreidel song that everyone knew. Of course, our Hebrew School teachers introduced us to others, but they were a bit boring. These days, we are lucky to have many more amazing options.

Thanks to Waldmania! my family was introduced to The Mama Doni Band when they released the Shabbat Shaboom CD in the spring. Now my family is rocking out to a classic Chanukah CD from Mama Doni called Chanukah Fever.

FRONT-COVER-CHANUKAH-FEVER-150-dpi_t

About Chanukah Fever:

Chanukah Fever contains 14 songs by Doni Zasloff Thomas (Mama Doni) that show off her love for embracing Judaism, holidays, and traditions. She uses words and song to teach lessons while exposing families to new types of music. Doni blends her musical talent with reggae, rock, disco, Latin, klezmer, and more. The topics of the songs include latkes, dreidels, Yiddish expressions, and a lot of humor.

Chanukah 2010Tracks on the CD include:

  • Intro
  • Chanukah Fever
  • Latke Man
  • Honey, This Ain’t Money!
  • The Legend of Sour Cream vs Applesauce
  • The Funky Gold Menorah
  • Bubbie’s Mi Yimalel
  • Eight
  • A Land Called Sufganiyot
  • Dear Hanukah Harry,
  • Mac A. Bee
  • I Say Chanukah (You Say Hanukah)
  • La Vida Dreidel
  • Ma-oz Tzur Finale

Thanks to YouTube, I can also share the “Chanukah Fever” video so you can hear what at least one of the songs is like. Here is The Mama Doni Band with “Chanukah Fever” – get ready to dance!

What We Thought:

To say that we loved this CD would be an understatement. The weekend that we received it, it stayed in my car and we drove around listening to it. Within a few listens, the kids were singing along. TechyDad and I could not help laughing and loved how it integrated traditions, Hebrew/Yiddish, and more. NHL is eight and knew some of the items from Hebrew School so it gave us some fun items to chat about. Even JSL, 4, loved rocking out to the catchy tunes.

I think my favorite song on the CD is “I Say Chanukah (You Say Hanukah)” because it pokes fun at the need to use the chhhhh (pretend you are trying to clear your throat) sound. It isn’t every day that words like Chanukah, l’chaim, chupah, and tuchus. I literally had tears in my eyes thanks to reading the words to this song.

I’m not sure if the boys have an absolute favorite since they enjoy the entire CD. Just the other day, NHL randomly started belting out “The Legend of Sour Cream Vs. Applesauce” while riding to school without the music on. I am sure that this CD will be played a lot in the upcoming weeks as we get ready for the Festival of Lights and try to keep family traditions alive.

For my local readers, The Mama Doni Band will be in town this weekend. On Sunday, December 4 they will have a concert at Congregation Agudat Achim in Schenectady, NY. For additional concert dates, head over to The Mama Doni Band Facebook page for updates.

Thanksgiving 2011 Memories

We had a relatively quiet Thanksgiving this years. The boys and I went to Nana and Papa’s house for the day and just lounged around. Wednesday night, I baked a Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cake. We brought the items to make the Asian Salad that my parents requested. Happy Thanksgiving

When we got to the house, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was on. The boys watched on and off as they were being goofy.

Silly Turkeys

The turkey was finished really early on. My mother opted to buy a turkey breast, not the whole bird, and it turned out to be the perfect size for the six of us.

Turkey Time

Once the turkey was done and everything else ready to heat up later on, we all piled into the living room to have some snacks for lunch. There is just something fun about finger foods before sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner. Oh, much to my amazement, the little guy gobbled up hummus. I was floored and had to take a photo to show him later in case he refuses to eat it again. Lunch food fun

After this, it was time to grab a seat and start watching Cars 2. We never had a chance to get to see it over the summer, so it was a first for all of us together. Cars 2 Time

We did not finish the movie at that point. The boys needed to play and get some energy out. Then, it was time to get dinner into the oven to heat and time to serve.

P1060404

Once all of the food was ready, it was time to grab out plates and sit down together for a wonderful meal.

Delicious Meal

When we were finished eating, some went off to relax – and others helped to clean up. JSL was really into cleaning with Nana and Papa. NHL appeared to be exhausted thanks to eating turkey.

After dinner

Once dinner was over, we finished Cars 2 to digest our food. Then, it was time to have dessert. We had pumpkin chocolate chip cake, chocolate rugelach, and dark chocolate peanut butter ice cream.

Sweet Ending

After this, we got the boys into their pajamas, watched a little television, and went home. It was a wonderful day with family making some wonderful memories. Thank you Nana and Papa for inviting us to be with you.

What did you do for Thanksgiving this year?
