Human Nature – Reach Out (Review/Giveaway)

In February, NHL’s school had a tribute to Michael Jackson for Black History Month. For months, the kids practiced songs by The King of Pop. On the day of the event, it was amazing watching the kids sing, dance and enjoy what they had learned with those of us in the audience. Thanks to this, NHL (6) has an appreciation for another genre of music. He has actually asked to hear more of Jackson’s songs and I will oblige since it is the music I grew up with.

When I was asked to review Reach Out by Human Nature, I jumped at the opportunity. It looked like something my family would like and would continue to let my boys get associated with Motown classics.

Human Nature Reach Out

Our thoughts about Reach Out:

I decided to take the CD into the car when we went for a ride the other day. That meant I had a captive audience with the two boys (6 and 2) and hubby. We popped it in and started. I will not lie, JSL (2) protested. He did not want to listen and was demanding to hear Wiggles. His little demands and mini-tantrum were not given into. We were going to listen to Human Nature and not the usual Aussie kids music. NHL (6) asked about the songs. He wanted to know what they were. We told him they were a group from Australia singing Motown music that is very popular in the United States. He was cooperative and willing to listen.

Of course, NHL was a fan of the CD the minute he heard what track #9 was. That would be ABC and was one of the Michael Jackson songs that he performed at his school assembly. My kiddo shocked people at Disney when he belted out each and every word of this song at a party that we attended. Sure enough, when the song came on in the car he was singing and dancing in his seat. He loved it and kept asking to hear it over and over again. As I sit here and type this up now, my little guy is begging to hear ABC over and over – so we have another kiddo that is enamored with this song.

Not to worry, we did not simply listen to ABC over and over. We only did that 4-5 times that afternoon! We continued on with the entire CD. TechyDad and I noted that the songs are reminiscent of the classic Motown feel, but updated some. Several of the songs have tempos that are a bit faster and beats that are a little more bold. We both enjoyed it a lot. Even NHL wanted to explore some of the other songs and will dance along with them when we play the CD in the house.

I really enjoyed Reach Out by Human Nature and will be on the look out for more music from this bright and shining group from Down Under.

Dove Men + Care (Review/Giveaway)

Let’s face it, there are countless soaps and body washes that are marketed for women. Meanwhile, men are often  forced to use generic products or the ones that their wife/girlfriend/significant other purchase. Dove has now put out a product line to help men and their unique skin needs. When I was asked by Family Review Network to see if my husband would try and review the Dove Men + Care products, he agreed. If you watched the Super Bowl you may remember this hilarious commercial for the product:

What is Dove® MEN+CARE?

Dove introduces, MEN+CARE, the brand’s first-ever product line created specifically for men. The new products are designed for men who have a reached a point in their lives where they are comfortable with themselves, but not in their skin. Many men put up with cleansing products that are harsh and drying, without realizing these products leave their skin feeling dry, irritated and uncomfortable. Men even blame their socks for their skin irritation when it is really the drying effect of regular cleansers!

Total Skin Comfort

Dove developed MEN+CARE so men can literally be comfortable in their skin. Built on the Dove brand’s heritage in cleansing, moisturizing and care, the new MEN+CARE products offer great cleansing combined with Dove moisturizers to provide total skin comfort. Dove MEN+CARE is dermatologist recommended and clinically proven to fight skin dryness without irritation or tightness.

Products Available:

  • Dove Men+Care Body and Face Wash
  • Body and Face Bars – 2 bars/SRP $3.19 – Available in Extra Fresh and Deep Clean
  • Dove Men+Care Body and Face Bar
  • Active Clean Shower Tool  $3.99
  • Dove Men+Care Scrubber

To help and get the word out about the new line of Dove products for men, Dove is having a contest. You could win the man in your life a manly backyard makeover. All you have to do is share your story of that unsung moment when you knew your man was comfortable with his own skin. To learn more about the contest head here for details.

Thoughts from TechyDad:

Body Wash – I’ll admit, I was hesitant with this.  As a general rule, I hate body washes.  They tend to leave a residue and I feel like they’re not washing off.  The Dove Body Wash, however, seemed to wash off nicely without me feeling like I was still soapy after the suds were washed off.  I like that it didn’t seem to have an overpowering smell too. Since B is sensitive to perfumes, we buy mostly unscented products.Years of doing this has left me noticing whenever a product has a fragrance.  The Dove Body Wash might have a small bit of fragrance to it (tough for me to tell with my nose’s current condition), but it is not overpowering.  I would definitely use this again.

Scrubber – I’ve used "poofs" previously and have liked them.  This scrubber, however, takes the general shower poof concept and adds to it.  On one side is something resembling a "poof" only with more substance to it. Actually, calling it a poof sells it short.  This is no lightweight, it can really scrub your skin.  The other side is a scrubber that… well, scrubs even more.  Dove says it "helps exfoliate for a deeper clean."  I can’t attest to whether any exfoliation occurred (I have no clue how to tell), but my skin did feel cleaner when I used this.
Especially my face that tends to get oily.  (I thought that was supposed to stop when I stopped being a teen!)

Body & Face Bar – When I opened this package, I was preparing myself for a stench of fragrance.  The box smelled of fragrance and so I figured the bar would be heavily scented.  I was pleasantly surprised when the bar’s fragrance was subtle, not overpowering.  I’m not sure why the box smelled so much, but, since I wasn’t going to be lathering up with the box, I didn’t put much thought into it.  This bar did pretty well.  It lathered nicely and washed off clean.

Giveaway:

Thanks to Dove, one lucky reader will win their own bottle of Men + Care Body and Face Wash along with a Body and Face Bar.

Cook’s Ham Giveaway for Easter

CooksLogoSlogan-center

Yes, I am aware of the fact that I do not celebrate Easter. My family is Jewish and we celebrate Passover. Still, I grew up with friends that invited me over to celebrate Easter with them over the years. I have to admit, I was not a fan of ham. There was just something about it that I did not like. When I married TechyDad, he asked that we keep a kosher kitchen. That means no pork products and other non-kosher items in our house. Unlike my husband, I do eat non-kosher items from time to time when we are out and about.

easter plt bckgrnd2

Case in point was when I went to the Cook’s Ham blogger event at Price Chopper a little over a week ago. I did not think I was going to try the ham, but the smell and look intrigued me. Family, please forgive me. It was not the first time and will not be the last that it will pass by my lips! I was pleasantly surprised with the Cook’s Ham. It was nothing like the overly salty, hard to chew hams that I had tried in my life.

I have to admit something else, I am jealous. Ham looks like such a great and versatile protein to use with a family. The recipe possibilities and types of products are huge. Just from Cook’s you can buy: spiral ham, whole ham, half/portion ham, ham streak, and thick cut ham steak. There are a lot of great resources for recipes to use with the ham, as sides and beyond. A ham that was served as a main dinner can later be reinvented and used countless other meals that are fresh and do not seem like leftovers.

Meals with Cook's Ham

The truth is, there is no kosher meat like ham and I wish there was. Here is a ham conversation that I had with my six year old son the other day:

NHL: "Mom, can we have green eggs and ham today?"   (It was St Patrick’s Day)

Me: "I can make you green eggs, but no ham."

NHL: "Why not Mommy?"

Me: "Ham is not kosher, so we can not have it."

Without missing a beat. . . .

NHL: "Do they make kosher ham? If they do I really want it!"

*sigh*  Sad to say that will never happen, but a girl can certainly dream.

With the Easter season quickly coming, Cook’s Ham has a website with recipes and ideas to go along with your ham preparations. You can search for recipes via an ingredient search, or look under Easter ideas, Great tasting Glaze, or Ham Leftovers. The fun part, there are even recipes on their website that I can use because not everything includes ham (delicious sounding desserts and sides included).

Giveaway:

Thanks to Cook’s Ham, TWO lucky readesr will each win a coupon for a Free Cook’s Ham up to $30.00. It may be used on Cook’s Bone-In Hams & Ham Steaks, Cook’s Spiral Slices Hams and Cook’s Corned Beef Brisket. Cook’s Ham can be purchased at Price Chopper Stores or you can check here for a store near you.

mirra products (Review/Giveaway)

Please raise your hand if you are always on the look out for new skin and hair care products.

*wildly flailing my arms around*

mirra logo

As a thirty something year old woman,  I still have a hard time finding products to tame my thick, wavy/curly and very frizzy hair. Add to this, trouble locating items to moisturize my extremely dry and sensitive skin. Most of the products that are out there are too heavy on scents/perfumes and cause me to sneeze and/or make my skin to break out in a rash.

When I was asked by Global Influence to review some new beauty/hair products, I agreed and was sent items from the new line of mirra products sold at Kroger stores.

mirra Products 1

Information about mirra:

Launching now, mirra products include shampoos and conditioners; hair styling products; body washes and mists; facial and skin care lotions, cleansers and cleansing cloths; eye firming and age defying creams; and cosmetic brushes.

mirra products are made with natural ingredients, such as olive oil, aloe leaf juice, and cranberry, bamboo, honey and chicory root extracts. Proven technologies are used for many of the products too. For example, the revolutionary oleosome emulsion technology is used in skin care products to deliver long lasting moisture that keeps protecting and nourishing skin long after application.

mirra products can be found in the beauty care aisles exclusively at all stores that are part of the Kroger Co. family. For a limited time, mirra is offering $5 off when you purchase any two mirra products. To download the coupon visit www.kroger.com\coupons.

 My thoughts about mirra:

For the last two weeks, I have been using the mirra products that I received. For my hair, I was sent the mirra Daily shampoo and conditioner along with the mirra Daily strong sculpting gel. As I have mentioned before, I have extremely thick hair that tends to have a frizzy life of it’s own thanks to unruly curls/waves. When I tried the shampoo, the first thing I noticed was the subtle scent. It was not overpowering and was thick in my hands. I can not stand shampoo and conditioner that is thin and runny. This held up nice. A small amount went a long way. When I was done washing my hair, there were no snarls. I was able to easily run my fingers through my tresses. Then, it was time to put in some sculpting gel. While my hair was still damp, I ran a small amount into my hair and crunched my hair to maximize my curls. As my hair dried, I was pleasantly surprised that there was little or no frizz throughout the day. In addition to this, the curl stayed the entire day and my hair did not feel crunchy from too much product.

I also received mirra Renew replenishing body wash and protective lotion. Time to admit something here. I am not a big fan of body wash. When I use them, I usually feel slimy when I am done. As someone with very dry and sensitive skin, with eczema in the winter months, I need items that are gentle and helps me to keep needed moisture. When I tried the body wash, there was a hint of fragrance, but nothing that made me stop using it. After my shower, my skin felt clean and I did not have a slimy feeling that I have experienced with some other body washes. I also liked that a very small amount lathered up significantly and went a long way. The winter is not kind to my skin. There are times when I feel like my skin is a desert and needs constant moisture or I get cracks from extreme dry areas. The lotion also had a light and natural smelling fragrance to it. When I used it, I immediately noticed that it was not very thick. I put it on my skin. It took a little while to completely sink into my skin, but I did not feel greasy. For my skin, this will probably do better in the summer when I am not lacking moisture from the lack of humidity.

For my face, I received the mirra Renew deep-moisture day cream and wrinkle reduction eye cream. The first thing that I noticed about both of these was they were extremely thick. A small amount of each went a long way on my face. When I used the Day Cream before my make up, my face and neck were ready and did not need more cream the rest of the day. It has been a little too short of a time to see if there is really a differece from the eye cream, but I will keep using it. The only thing I was not thrilled with was the lack of SPF in the day cream. As a red head with really pale skin, I need protection from the sun each day.

My overall thoughts are that I really like the mirra line of products. I only wish I had a Kroger store in my area to buy them in. Hopefully, they decide to offer them online for people like me to buy because I was really sold on the haircare products in particular and would like to try some of the other items that I was not sent.

Thanks to Kroger, one lucky reader will win a package similar to the one that I received with a variety of mirra products.

National Geographic Kids – Weird But True (Review/Giveaway)

Have I mentioned lately how we love books? Seriously, we are constantly getting new books, going to the library and reading something with the boys. NHL is in first grade and likes to read books with history, science or things to learn. Yes, our first grader is slowly warping very nicely into a mini-Geek!

When we were asked by Family Review Network to review the new National Geographic Kids: Weird But True! 300 Outrageous Facts book, we jumped at the opportunity. As a teacher, I had many National Geographic Kids books in my classroom, so I knew it would have amazing photos to share with my boys.

WBT-Logo

About the book (from their website):

At last, all those weird but true facts that readers of National Geographic Kids love so much are collected into a fun-filled book that you’ll come back to again and again!

Weird But True is based on the hugely popular magazine page of quirky, fun facts that many readers of National Geographic Kids magazine turn to first. Why? Well did you know that…

  • Peanut butter can be converted into a diamond?
  • The world’s oldest pet goldfish lived to be 43 years old?
  • The world’s longest soap bubble was as long as four school buses?
  • On Neptune, the wind blows up to 1,243 miles an hour?
  • An elephant’s tooth can weigh as much as a bowling ball?

All of the facts in this handy book will amaze friends and family: Animals Superpowers, Chills and Thrills, Eat or Be Eaten, Mini and Mega, Wild and Crazy, and much, much more. Adjacent pages for such facts present a one-paragraph explanation of how that fact is possible or why it is so.

Purchase your copy for $6.95.

What we thought:

Both of the boys are fascinated with the photos within Weird But True. Yes, even my 2 year old will sit with the book for an extended time looking at all of the photos. JSL will chat away and call out all of the items that he recognizes. NHL, in first grade, will read the facts to me and then talk with me about what it says. Our conversations actually made me think about ways to use this book in the classroom. (I am always a teacher, even when on hiatus.) I could see the fun facts in this book being used as a prompt for classroom discussion and/or a writing exercise. In addition to this, the facts could easily create interest in a subject for kids to do more research on. Anything that excites children to learn gets a thumbs up from me.

Giveaway:

Thanks to National Geographic Kids, one lucky reader will win a copy of National Geographic Kids: Weird But True! 300 Outrageous Facts for your family.
