Hockey game memories

The other night, we took the boys to a pre-season hockey game. The event was free for the community, so we figured it would be a great time to go. This was the first ever hockey experience for JSL. NHL has been to a few before, but so many years ago that he does not remember.

When we decided to go, I told TechyDad that I was going to do something that I never thought I would do. I actually asked for seats behind the nets. Since it was only 24 hours from our ER visit with the little guy, I wanted to make him less of a puck magnet.

View from our seats

To understand why it was painful for me to do this, you should know that for several years I had season tickets to our hockey team. My season tickets were a few rows back, on center ice and right behind our home team’s bench. The seats were amazing when I was into it, but as a parent they make me a little nervous with pucks flying by. Of course, reality also hit during the game. I realized that it has been ten years since I had season tickets. My how time flies!

Both of the boys liked the hockey game. NHL had fun watching the instant replays, chanting for the home team and screaming when prompted. JSL got a little antsy, but was content with a snack.

Snack time

Of course, one of JSL’s favorite parts was when the zamboni came out. He sat there mesmerized by the big "car" and kept jumping up and down each time it was close to our end of the ice.

A favorite of the little guy

Toward the end of the game, I asked NHL if I could get a photo of him wearing his hockey shirt. Check out the only photo he would allow:

Attitude from NHL

So my question for you this week is inspired by our recent fun at the hockey game:

What is your favorite sport to watch in person (not on television) and why?  Feel free to shout out your favorite team while you are at it!

Lego mania at Disney World

It is hard for me to believe that it has been almost four months since our family vacation to Disney World in May. To say that I would jump at a chance to go back is an understatement. Sad to also admit that I never finished blogging about our Disney vacation. Something today made me think of the trip.

Both of our boys love to build. We have lots of Lego items in our house and at Nana and Papa’s. We started with quatro blocks, moved up to duplo sets and NHL received a set of regular legos for his birthday over a year ago. NHL is intrigued with building bigger and more recognizable items now. I think some of this has to do with our visit to Disney World.

When we went to Downtown Disney on JSL’s birthday we wanted to get each of the boys their own stuffed friend. A trip to Disney World, especially their first, would not be complete without this. Here are the boys with the friends that they picked.

NHL wanted Dumbo since he was enchanted by the ride at the Magic Kingdom.

Dumbo for the big kid

Meanwhile JSL fell head over heels for Pluto, or as he calls him "Pup-pup" on this trip.

Pup-Pup for the little guy

Both of the boys were happy and excited to hug their new friends on the way out of the Disney store.

Happy in their stroller

After this we decided to go to the next store over which is all Lego products. It is absolutely amazing. Here are the boys outside with some of the Lego statues. JSL had to do a double take because he was not sure about the dogs. Eventually they both checked everything out.

Amazing Lego display

Once we were able to pull the boys away from the Lego people and dogs, we went into the store. They both immediately ran to the first display they saw. Here it is:

More creations inside

We looked around at everything for a little while. Then we spotted an area outside where the boys would build with Legos and go on a nice sized playground. Looked like the perfect place for them to get some energy out before going to lunch.

Time to run around

While the boys played here I went to look at another store to see something. When I came back I saw that our now two year old was quite the daredevil – Oy! He kept doing this over and over again.

Don't ask       Perhaps a 2 year old thing

Soon it was time to find a place for lunch. As we wandered back toward a few places we stopped to check out more of the Lego creations. First up were the underwater creatures.

Looking at the shark and crab

Check out this intimidating looking guy:

Whoa - look at him

Next up is the dinosaur that was a big favorite of our boys.

ROAR

And last, but certainly not least was the sea creature that is in the Lagoon. We have photos of this one from our honeymoon as well. Love this one as a sentimental favorite from my many trips to Disney World over the years.

Old time favorite

It was a beautiful day for JSL’s 2nd birthday and we enjoyed strolling around Downtown Disney before swimming at Pop Century and going to the Magic Kingdom for dinner at the Crystal Palace.

So, let me ask you. . . .

IF you had unlimited Lego opportunities (no cost) and the time, what would you build with them?

I know I can not wait to see all that our boys will make as they grow older and learn to love Legos even more!

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Tours/Discounts

It’s hard to believe, but I never went to see The Greatest Show on Earth until I was almost in college. I still remember feeling like a kid as I went into the arena with my Aunt S and two cousins to see the show. We arrived early to see the pre-show and everything was amazing. Each performance topped the next. The clowns made everyone laugh and we all had an amazing time. Last year the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus was visiting, but we were not able to go. Sadly, they were in our area just a day or two before we left for our week long vacation at Walt Disney World. We would have loved to go, but it was just too much. This year we have already promised the kids and ourselves that we will be there if they come to our arena.

Once again Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Baily Circus is gearing up for another season of new shows that hopefully will be visiting an area near you. To make it an even better deal, Mom Central is offering discount codes to select locations!

Shows coming this fall & winter:

Over the top

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents Over The Top, an all-new live entertainment extravaganza featuring the ultimate tug of war between Ringmaster Chuck Wagner and clown eccentric Tom Dougherty over a magical top hat that controls the circus. When the Ringmaster dons the hat he conjures stupendous spectacles for his circus, like the stunt riding Royal Cossack Cavalry while the clown uses the hat to summon silly and whimsical acts for his circus, such as a cavalry of goats riding on ponies in a Barnyard Bonanza.  They continue to top one another until the Ringmaster and clown realize that the magic of the circus is not in the hat but in the hearts of everyone. The show culminates in an amazing display of gigantic glowing rainforest flowers surrounding Chinese acrobats swinging on vines and propelling through the air. Over the Top is two circuses in one providing excitement for the whole family.

Audiences will see nearly 100 animals including flying dogs, Asian elephants that skip, hop, and groove, miniature horses, llamas, pigs, and even a performing porcupine. In a daring feat, the courageous Daniel Raffo stands eye to eye with a pack of powerful Bengal tigers. Circus celebrities help rev-up the motorcycle madness featuring one cycle on a high wire and seven speeding riders in a Globe of Steel. Extraordinary aerial acts fill the arena sky with a rare double-decker trapeze and the Bombastic Bouncers who combine gigantic inner tubes and awe-inspiring acrobatics in a high-energy performance never before seen in America. And with the audience’s participation, this circus really goes Over The Top

 Zing Zang Zoom

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents ZING ZANG ZOOM®: Through the mystery of magic and the mastery of skill, audiences will be spellbound as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents ZING ZANG ZOOM®, a thrill-filled, mind-blowing circus spectacular where family fun is no illusion.

Magical Zingmaster Alex and his assistant, the alluring Levitytia, lead audiences through a kaleidoscope of color and imagery revealing extraordinary worlds of fantasy, flight and phenomena that celebrates the uplifting spirit of the circus and wards off a cynical Mr. Gravity and his team of "heavies" who try to bring everyone down.

Be mesmerized when a four-ton elephant disappears before your eyes, and a gravity-inducing nemesis transforms across species into a ferocious tiger.  Stand in awe as a dazzling trapeze artist performs a perilous, anatomically unimaginable one-arm speed-spin high atop the arena floor, and two formidable, female human cannonballs are blasted through the air in a daring, awe-inspiring display of bravery.  Become electrified as the dangerous double wheel of steel, the gasp-inducing high wire and soaring gigantic swings defy both gravity and logic.

Fun-filled magic merges with traditional circus arts to create a world of infinite possibilities where apprentice illusionists levitate their parents with a wave of a wand, and audience spirits keep rising as the high flying circus is (literally) turned upside down.  Perhaps the most magical of all, watch in amazement as an incomparable array of exotic animals including a herd of majestic Asian elephants, magnificent Bengal tigers and elegant Arabian and Friesian horses join forces with our human performers to create an experience that will surprise and delight Children of All Ages, rendering us speechless and reminding us that the magic of The Greatest Show On Earth® lives forever in our hearts and imaginations.

I can not wait to see Zing Zang Zoom with my family when it travels here in the spring of 2010!

From kindergarten to babies and beyond

When my son started kindergarten last year, I had a secret wish in the back of my head. I hoped that he would become friends with someone and continue on through school with that child. I was lucky enough to have this when I started school all those years ago. Back in my kindergarten days I met M and we quickly became friends. She would come over to my house, I would go to her house. We traveled all through elementary school in the same class. When we went to middle school we had a few classes together, but still remained close friends. In high school it was more difficult to have the same schedules. I still recall one of my favorite classes was Pottery and Sculpture because M and I were both in that class. It was fun seeing her and chat, plus the class was relaxing compared to all of the other academics within the day.

When we graduated from high school M went off to college not too far from here and I stayed at a local school. Time slipped by and we would e-mail each other every so often. When M was done with school she moved across the country. When she came back to visit several  years later we got together. Many years had gone by, but we picked up our special friendship where it had left off. When M and her husband moved to Europe for a while we stayed in touch online. After that adventure they came back and settled in this area.

On Sunday I went to M’s baby shower. She and her husband F are expecting their first little one  in just a few weeks. Each time I was introduced to someone we explained how we met in kindergarten. It made me smile and think of what an accomplishment that is.  M and I may not see each other as much as we did when we were little, but our friendship has lasted over two dozen years – that is saying something.

Friends Forever

M has watched me as I became a mother and now I will be able to see her in that new role. I look forward to meeting her little one and watching him/her grow up.

Happy Mommy-to-be

Moosekin, I wish you and F only the best as you begin this new adventure in life. I know that both of you are going to be amazing parents. Remember to enjoy this special time, learn as you go along and savor the moments because they truly grow up too quickly. It seems like just yesterday when we were in kindergarten together and look at us now!
