The Many Adventures of Snowflake

Growing up, I remember going to see ice shows with my family. Now, it’s like The Lion King and a Circle of Life taking my own kids.
Back in the day, the Ice Capades were big. One year, back in the 80’s, they featured The Smurfs. I remember taking my Smurfette doll and getting a program and button (that I still have). Of course, those shows often featured Olympic figure skating stars as part of the draw. These days, there are shows with just figure skating for the diehards, and then family shows like Disney’s that tell beautiful stories with costumes and on ice artistry.
Seeing a Disney story come to life on skates is just beautiful. Here, I share a small section of the Mickey & Minnie’s Magical Journey now on tour. This is the end of The Lion King section. Mickey and friends come back out to introduce us to the next part of their adventure and then Sebastian comes to bring us to the world of The Little Mermaid.
Have you ever been to the Ice Capades, Disney on Ice or another show like those? I would love to know and have you share your memories.
Dear NHL and JSL,
All week you had been told that a surprise was coming. On Thursday morning, Daddy and I finally told you that that would be the day of the big surprise. Little did you know that a clue had been given. When I picked out your clothing, there was someone there if you had noticed. Of course, since we had so many Disney and Mickey Mouse items it went right over your head.
When JSL was tired in the afternoon and I told him it would be a good idea to nap with a late night. JSL, you demanded to know where we were going. When I told you I could not tell you, it was a surprise, you did not take that well. So I decided to give you a small clue. I simply said “There’s a clue on you.!” You sat on the couch, thought about it briefly. Then, you looked down your tummy and a giant smile came over your face.
Then you screamed out “We’re going to Disney on Ice!” Yes, you got it and we talked about not ruining the surprise for NHL. When we picked NHL up from school, he was excited because he knew he was closer to the surprise reveal. When we gave him the clue, it was a bit more difficult to figure out since he was wearing a jacket. NHL, you got it and you jumped up and down and were so happy since you love Disney on Ice.
No, I may not have completely kept the surprise until we arrived at the arena, but I did a really good job. The smiles on your faces as you saw the characters that you love on the ice was priceless. It was amazing to see The Lion King, Little Mermaid, Lilo & Stitch, Peter Pan, and of course Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, and Goofy in front of us.
Later, we need to write a big thank you note to Mr. M for giving us his magical tickets. Thanks to him, we have memories that will last a long time. Now, we can sit back watch the videos and look at all of our photos. Who knows what the next surprise will be.
Love,
Mommy

Last week, an e-mail from Build-A-Bear came to me. It was actually for my son. It was inviting NHL to come back to make a new friend. The coupon allowed him to get a free $12 friend, or apply it toward a more expensive one. After seeing The Muppets, we walked up to Build-A-Bear Workshop to see if there was anything that the kids were interested in.
Within a few minutes, NHL and JSL each had a new best friend that they wanted to make. It was no surprise to me that NHL wanted to make a Smurf and JSL picked the blue Winter Wonder Teddy. I had a feeling they might select these after I saw them at an event in NYC during SheStreams
After a short wait, we met with the person to help make our new family members just perfect for lots of hugging. She was amazing. This was not our first time at Build-A-Bear, but I have to say she really made this experience even more special. She talked with both of the boys, helped them to make the Smurf and bear just right.
Then, it was time for the new family members to get their hearts. She had NHL and JSL do a cute dance routine when they gave their friends their hearts. After that, it was time to sew up their buddies to begin their adventure within the store.
From here, it was time to clean our new Smurf and Bear friends. We spent some time at the area making sure that everyone looked just right before we went to the next part of the process.
Once the boys were done here, we went to wait on line to register our new family members. This was also the time that they received their names. NHL named his Smurf Clumsy and JSL named his bear Snowflake.
Once we had the certificates and paid, the boys posed for one last photo in the store. Then, we took everyone home to meet Spike and Puppy.
Of course, Clumsy and Snowflake are getting used to life here with us. Snowflake has already been on several adventures and those will be shared another day. Now, if only I had my own special Build-A-Bear of my own – *wink* *wink*
