Disney Loving in February

Each month, the Disney Wordless Wednesday has a calendar shot for the first week. Valentine’s Day is huge at Walt Disney World. Back in 2010, we were there the week before and saw how merchandise came alive for the celebration of love. I thought I would make my calendar shot of TechyDad and me from our recent trip with Minnie in her pink outfit by Storybook Circus. The rest are some memories from our chilly February experience back in February 2010.

Mickey Takes Time to Listen

My boys have not always liked going to have photos taken with Disney characters. We actually have documented the way that they have grown up and learned to enjoy interacting. Two years ago, JSL really came out of his shell. He was finally willing to walk up to the characters when his big brother went running ahead.

Meeting Mickey at Disney's Animal Kingdom

No, we no longer had to hold him in our arms. At nearly four years old, JSL was warming up to Mickey and other characters. There may not have been a smile on his face, but he was having fun.

Once the boys took a photo with Mickey, we did the obligatory family photo. Where else can you get a photo with everyone in it?

Then, something even more magical happened. JSL stopped to say something to Mickey. Not only did he wait to listen to JSL’s request, he bent down to accommodate his kiss.

Of course, there was more. Mickey returned the kiss back to JSL.

Have you had any extra magical moments like this with a character that you captured? I would love to hear all about them.

Lightning McQueen and Mater Revisited

During out first trip to Walt Disney World with the boys, they were pretty terrified of characters. On our first evening there, we had dinner at Chef Mickey and it did not go too well. We had two little boys (5 and almost 2) hiding on the inside of our table and underneath.

The following day, we went to Disney Hollywood Studios to explore that park and celebrate Mother’s Day. While there, we had the opportunity to go and meet Lightning McQueen and Mater. We figured the kids like Cars and would adore these vehicles since they were not “characters” like at Chef Mickey.

Here is NHL getting his picture taken with the duo alone.

Meeting Lightning McQueen and Mater at Hollywood Studios

Notice how NHL, in kindergarten at the time, stood in the middle and looked a bit distracted? He was not a fan of the loud car noises, especially from Mater. When it was time for a family photo, you can see JSL (turned 2 during our stay) was clinging to TechyDad trying to hide, and NHL moved closer to me than Mater.

Fast forward to April 2012. Now the boys were 8 and almost 5. They had learned to appreciate the characters, but had avoided Lightning and Mater. While TechyDad and I were off at a conference day, Nana and Papa took the boys to Hollywood Studios. Much to my surprise, within our PhotoPass pictures were the following items.

Both of the boys were alone with Lightning and Mater. NHL was actually touching Lightning and now the almost kindergartener was in the middle being brave. Then one of my favorite photos of NHL was in this group. He was so happy, focused, and proud of being next to Lightning.

This was a big moment for NHL and I was so glad that the magic was captured by the PhotoPass photographer. Of course, they also got a great shot of the boys with Nana and Papa.

Magical memories at Disney's Hollywood Studios

Thanks to being able to go to Disney several times, the kids have overcome their fears, grown, and shared many magical moments like these since their first trip in 2009.

Magical Mickey Ice Cream Bar Moments

Going to Walt Disney World is filled with magical moments and memories that we will always remember. I can recall meeting Figment for the first time, riding on Space Mountain with my father, and now, as a parent, I have some of these with my own children. Sometimes these moments have been around famous Disney foods like Mickey’s Ice Cream Bar.

First Mickey Bar Moments

In May of 2009, we brought the boys to Walt Disney World for their first adventure on an airplane and to see this magical destination. We have so many photos of the experience, but on the last evening of our trip we made sure to take a few messy photos. We bought the boys their first Mickey Ice Cream Bars and sat down in the Pop Century Resort to let them enjoy.

NHL, five at the time, knew just how to attack his Mickey treat. JSL, who turned two during our visit, was not as sure. He needed a little assistance with getting inside the chocolate shell.

Once inside, JSL quickly caught on and enjoyed the chocolate covered ice cream treat. Nana and Papa were there to watch the kids. Oh and perhaps it is now a tradition for visits with Nana and Papa since we did the same thing on our last night in May. The only difference was two bigger boys eating them super fast in the heat while sitting in rocking chairs at the Yacht Club Resort.

Do you have any special Disney treat moments to share? I would love to hear about them

Kindergarten Star of the Week

The weekend before break, JSL came home from kindergarten with a bag from his classroom. It was to announce that it was his turn to be Kindergarten Star of the Week. On Monday, he had to bring in some items that would fit into the bag to share with the class. It could be toys, a book, and other items that had a special meaning to him. In addition to this, JSL had to decorate and fill out a Star of the Week poster. He would share this with his classmates and after it would be on the door for everyone to see.

Since TechyDad and NHL were busy finishing up a Native American project for fourth grade, JSL and I went to Nana and Papa’s house to use their kitchen table. We brought pictures, stickers, glitter, markers, and crayons along with us.

As you can see, the poster was really quite large. There was a lot to color in and fill out. JSL had fun answering the questions and planning how to decorate the poster. He really got into it and wanted it to be just a certain way.

Concentrating on Star of the Week Kindergarten poster

First, JSL filled out his name and birthday. After that, he wrote that his favorite color was blue (no shock there). When he grows up, he wants to be a Dad. His hobbies are coloring, running, playing Nintendo, singing, and doing crafts. JSL’s favorite food is Mac and Cheese and Pizza (ultimate favorite Cici’s Mac and Cheese Pizza). Oh and JSL’s favorite sport is hockey.

When he was finished with everything, this is what JSL’s beautiful posted looked like:

Have any of your children done a Star of the Week poster like this for school? I would love to know what they wrote and shared with their class.
