Birthday Party Foods

Just days before NHL’s family birthday party (this past Sunday), I still had no menu for the lunch we were going to be serving people. Sure, I had ideas of what we needed to feed the kids. Still, the exact menu did not fully come together until we went shopping on Friday afternoon. We went to BJ’s and I found cheese tortellini, suddenly the main dish was before me. Here is a view of the foods on the table:

Birthday party foods of choice

We made the tortellini with lots of veggies and sauce on them. In addition to this, we had cut up veggies and dip, Baked Scoops and a bean dip that Katie blogged about (we added fake taco meat), soy meatballs, macarroni and cheese, and some pizza to bake. Please note that because of people that keep kosher (including TechyDad), we do dairy foods and meat substitutes to have cake later on. Everyone seemed to like it.

Then, it was time for cake. Sad to admit, the cake that NHL asked me to bake literally fell apart Sunday morning as I was decorating it. It tasted great, but I quickly recalled why I do not like making layer cakes.

Cake Fail

TechyDad took NHL out to buy another cake to put on the table, along with the egg free one for my niece. These are the goodies that we had for everyone, along with the failed layer cake that everyone also enjoyed.

Birthday Goodies

Anyone else think that the balloons on the cake (especially on the right), look like something out of a biology lesson?!

So this week I ask you:

When you plan a birthday party, what do you like to serve people to eat?

If you are a fan of The Wiggles or know someone that is, be sure to enter my giveaway for their new DVD. For another chance, stop by TechyDad’s blog as well. I am also giving away a $25 gift card to Sock4Life, so please leave a comment or two there for another great prize.

Time to stop and think

It has been a rough week around here. Feeling angry and hurt, like the system failed my family, would be understatement of the century. Right now, I am just not ready to explain more than that. I am still trying to figure items out and see if we have any legal recourse to help with part of the situation. The good news is nobody is hurt, things will get better and answers are finally coming our way.

Yesterday, I woke up with a migraine. It was just a sign of the way the day was going. I had not slept too well the night before after reading a bit too much about bedbugs and reports of them all over NYC, including the hotel that will host BlogHer this coming week. Like the thought of lice, bedbugs make me itch and creep me out.

I finally got dressed in the afternoon and decided to take JSL with me. I figured we would walk (read me push him in the stroller) over to Nana and Papa’s house to get out. Plus, it was a chance to have some of their caffeine rich Keurig coffee. We walked there in about 18 minutes (.89 miles) and stayed for a little while. Poor JSL fell running to get a toy and bit his lip and got a bump on his chin. He was super snuggly from that point on.

When it was time to leave, it looked like rain. TechyDad and NHL came to pick us up with the carseat for JSL. Of course, JSL insisted that we walk back with his stroller and not ride. NHL immediately wanted to go. So there I was walking back with both of the boys. It was a nice walk. NHL ran ahead of us and JSL was singing his Wiggles and Winne the Pooh Songs. I had to stop and take a photo

Walk with boys

Here were two of my boys, happy and carefree. For just a few minutes, even my worries were gone and everything was good in our little world. Although it did not last long, I enjoyed it and only wished that TechyDad had been with us. Instead, he stayed behind waiting to leave in case the sky decided to dump rain on us.

Thank you JL. Thank you for always being there for all of us and not being upset when something silly like everyone wanting to walk happens. Next time, let’s make it a family adventure together.

Education funding crisis – save our school

When my son left school on his last day of first grade, we assumed he would be back there in September to see his friends, teachers and other members of this amazing school community. This assumption came to a screeching hault on Tuesday afternoon. After a fun filled morning out, I arrived home to a rather disturbing e-mail. Nothing could prepare me for this as I let out a rather frightening scream and tears fell down my face.

It seems our dear governor had pulled some powerful punches that would pretty much screw our entire school district. Rather than think about the children that this move would hurt, he kept signing off on item after item. Once again our district was being forced to make some rather disturbing decisions which may include closing one or more elementary schools, including ours.

I do believe that fire burst from my eyes as the anger increased. No, I never thought we were 100% safe until my child walked into school in September, but I NEVER expected this on going roller coaster. My son heard me and saw that I was upset. I had to explain in second grader terms that once again we did not know if his school would be opening again. My child asked me why. This was a tough one. I told him that for too many years members of the powers that be have sat back and allowed some businesses to come into our district and take children away from us. I told him that they pretend to be schools, but most of them are not. I promised him that I would do everything in my power to:

Education Crisis

I asked NHL to go into the other room and play with JSL. I had some important phone calls to make. I started with the mayor and moved on down my list of community politicians. I left messages, talked with some people and then called a representative of our school district. I wanted to know what a concerned parent/citizen could do to wake up our community. Enough is enough! The truth needs to be heard and people need to stand together to stop the insanity. If we do not do this, not only will my son’s school be on the chopping block, but our entire public school system could be in danger. Our community needs to be the example to other parts of our state and I dare say the country. We need to get the right people to hear us and see how these money hungry businesses that are dressing up as educators are killing public schools across the nation.

School Supply List 2010

Every year, parents of school aged children brace themselves for the great school supply list. Last year, I wrote about my son’s first grade list and asked other people what was on their list. One week ago, NHL came home from school after his last half day. Inside his backpack were several items. In addition to his report card, the manila envelope contained the name of a teacher that NHL likely will have for second grade. What does that mean you ask? The exact words on the paper "Your child has been tentatively assigned to ___________ for the 2010-2011 school year. Please be aware the assigned classroom is subject to change." Not too sure what that means since there was NOT anything like that last year. Also tucked into the papers was the 2nd grade school supplies. I guess we shall see.

As far as the school supply list goes, it seems pretty reasonable. Here are the items:

  • pencils – 20 plain yellow wooden pencils
  • eraser – large pink
  • scissors
  • 6 LARGE glue sticks
  • plastic pencil box (2 1/2 x 5 x 8 inches)
  • one box of 24 crayons – no larger!
  • a red pen – for correcting
  • 2 marble composition notebooks
  • 1 plastic pocket folder, labeled with your child’s name
  • a book bad (no wheels please; they are unsafe on the stairs)
  • 1 LARGE box of tissues to be shared in the classroom
  • 1 LARGE package of baby wipes (to clean desks and hands)

I do have some of the items at home already thanks to great sales last year and teaching supplies that I still have on hand. We will keep an eye out for the back to school sales, which will begin next week (typically after July 4th). I am intrigued with the correcting pen. I really like that they will be editing their own work and hope this will address my concern with inventive spelling.

Another item in NHL’s backpack was the pencil box from first grade. Here are the items that I found when I opened it up:

Post 1st grade supplies

The pencils and crayon bits are now tossed, but the box is still in pretty good shape. I still have to see if the glue sticks are dried out or can be used for summer projects.

My next thought is whether or not we will need to get anything for JSL. *gasp*. . . my baby starts nursery school in September. Of course, right now the biggest item on my supply list for him is to get underpants on him. The two of us are still working on the power struggle that is potty training. At just three years old, I do not want to push him too much, but I KNOW he is ready. Oh well, that is a story for another day.

If you have school aged children, what is on your list this year?

As a parent and former teacher, I am always curious to see what the lists look like at different grade levels.

3 Year Portrait Success

No matter what happens, I always cringe when it is time to get portraits done for the boys. Last year, it took us two takes to get them done for JSL. In the end, they came out really nicely. Of course, our experience with Sears Portrait – on the corporate level was less than satisfactory. Still, when it was time to go back for JSL’s 3 year portraits, we went back to Sears. Corporate may not be the best, but it is the people in the studio during the session that really matter.

Originally, I had wanted to get JSL’s portraits done the week after his birthday when my mother had the day off of work. That changed when JSL got hurt the Sunday before. We waited for time to heal his lip and tooth. Things were better and I decided to make an appointment before NHL was out of school. We are not sure if JSL’s tooth is going to get worse, so I wanted to get them in sooner rather than later.  I figured try to get it done one evening when TechyDad could go with me. I scheduled an appointment for early evening just about six weeks after his birthday.

Last Wednesday, JSL took a nap and woke up in a good mood. We packed his outfits and props and went to the local Sears studio. At first, JSL was shy with the photographer. Eventually, he got into the groove and was helping to put props into the shot. He really liked playing with the photographer. Our only problem was that he kept running out of the picture as soon as she was ready for the shot. Luckily, she was quick and got a bunch of fabulous pictures.

Here are views from our session. As you will see, they are watermarked from Sears, but I HAD to share them since you can see the character come out of JSL in the various poses. First were some with the giant 3, his favorite buddies and his Winnie the Pooh outfit.

Then, we had a quick change of clothing to sport his new favorite Buzz Lightyear.

Buzz Lightyear Time

Although there were a lot of pictures that we really liked, we quickly narrowed it down to one with the giant three and one close up shot. In addition to this, we received a free collage that had three other pictures that we had not purchased within it. With any luck, everything will come in properly and not damaged so we can pick them up and not worry about portraits until NHL’s 7th birthday in August.

Do you like getting portraits done? What are some tips that you have to a good session?

Always looking for some ideas since you never know what may happen next time.
