ER Visit in the Night

Dear JSL,

Wednesday was a great day. After your graduation from nursery school, you had a special request for a lunch out. We went there, played outside, played at home. Then, you helped me to finish writing your birthday thank you notes. When we were done, I asked you to head with me to the mail box. It was at this point that I realized that we never did buy the gift for one of NHL’s teachers. NHL also mentioned that the following day he was supposed to bring in a snack to celebrate his summer birthday.

So you and I went to Price Chopper because I knew we could get some cookies without nuts and gift cards. When we got home, we talked with our neighbor while you ran and ran and ran around the house. Then, we took things inside and went to the mailbox. At bedtime, you started coughing. No matter what we did, you were not able to stop coughing. It was time to try something to help. I assumed it was asthma kicking in.

Nebulizer time

Once the nebulizer was over, it was already pretty late. We put you back into bed and sat in the room to make sure you would settle. Suddenly, I heard Daddy try to get you out of bed fast. You were throwing up and gasping for air. You were whisked away to the bathroom, where you were shaking horribly and could not stop this from happening over and over. We eventually got you into our bed and comfortable.

Sleeping for a short time

I dozed off briefly until you started to toss and turn. You started to cough again. We pulled out the nebulizer for another treatment since it had been five hours. Nothing got better. Your color was getting worse and your breathing getting more labored. Your little body was clearly in distress. We called Nana and Papa to see if they could take us to the ER. I was afraid to drive you alone with your breathing the way it was.

The ER brings back some bad memories for me. Thank goodness you do not recall a lot of the times you have been there for your fevers. The nurses were really great and had a doctor come to you in triage. They immediately noted that you had croup – that barking cough echoed down the halls. I’m not sure why I thought you were too old for that. The nurse and I tackled you to start some steroids to help the cough that was still horrible. Since your lungs were clear, we were told we just had to keep the meds in you and then could head home. We were moved to an area in the hall to sit in a chair. You immediately curled up in my arms to try to sleep.

Snuggles on Mommy

I sat there thanking my lucky stars that it was nothing more serious. Your lungs were healthy, your ears fine, and you were getting enough oxygen. A few hours after we arrived in the ER, we were sent home. You crawled into bed and managed to sleep for a few hours

More sleep after ER

I was not able to sleep. I watched you breathing and holding onto Perry who had also comforted you at the hospital. My mind was racing and I just wanted to see you rest in our home. Thank goodness you are feeling better now and soon you will be up to speed to really begin our summer vacation.

Love,

Mommy

Shalom Preschool Shabbat

Dear JSL,

Yesterday, we had another milestone of sorts. I hardly mentioned it to you because you seem sad about the end of the year. I know it is hard for you to understand leaving nursery school and moving onto kindergarten. We have all grown to love the two years that we have spent as part of the amazing community within your school. Everyone has been supportive from the parents, teachers, to the amazing director.

Caterpillars and Butterflies

The milestone was your last Shabbat in nursery school. This was the last Friday that you were officially in preschool. It tugged at my heart to realize that, in less than a week, you will be a kindergarten kid. You will never have the chance to be the Abba, to say the blessings in school with your friends, or have challah to celebrate.

Shabbat Abba

We will have to cherish the memories of you being Abba on your birthday week. It was so sweet seeing you wearing your birthday crown and helping your class. I also captured a video of this, but do not have permission to share it here since another classmate is on it. I know one day we will watch that and smile.

Kiddush cup and challah for shabbat

The memories that you have from the last two years will last you a life time. You have learned so much about Jewish life, celebrations, and adore it. I know you will take this with you and share with your friends in kindergarten and beyond. I am so proud of all that you do and look forward to watching you continue to grow up before my eyes.

Love,

Mommy

To the Magic Kingdom and Beyond with Nana and Papa

Dear NHL and JSL,

The other day, I was finally able to get to see the photos that Papa and Nana took with their camera while at Disney World. I saw some of the PhotoPass pictures, but wanted to see more of the candid shots from around the Yacht Club Resort and Disney parks. I have to say, it looks like the four of you had an amazing time exploring things together.

Ready to go to the parks

Without the two of you, I am not sure if Nana and Papa would have gone to have photos taken with Buzz Lightyear. Thanks to you being fans, we have the some Nana and Papa took of you alone and some with the four of you. These are priceless memories that I know will last.

Hello Buzz Lightyear

They also captured the two of you chilling out on the bus. I think you were likely looking at the ads up above. Most of the time you would point out Doc McStuffins and other familiar characters.

Back on the bus

I love seeing your smiles and knowing what a magical time we all had together, even if we were not always with you.

Love,

Mommy

Watermelon Inspired Biology Lesson

Dear JSL,

There are days when your innocence makes me smile and laugh. This is not a bad thing at all. Thursday afternoon, I had the watermelon on the table for a snack. You came running over full steam ahead. You adore watermelon and flashed your big blue eyes at me. Then the following conversation happened.

JSL: Mommy, can I have watermelon.

Me: Would I ever tell you no? Wait, yes I would….if you had diarrhea.

(Note to self, you brought this upon your snarky self)

JSL: <<Clueless big blue eyes and a smile>>

Me: Wow, I’m impressed. Hmmmm…

Watermelon snack time

As I was giggling, I had to take a photo of you holding the watermelon. After being momentarily distracted with the doorbell ringing, it was time to see if your big brother had a clue in the world. As a teacher, I was perplexed. I remember singing a song as a kid on just this topic. So I wen to your brother.

Me: "NHL do you know what diarrhea is"

NHL: "No – can you please move out of my way"

JSL: "Mommy is diarrhea just for peoples that can read?"

It was at that moment that I walked away. Clearly, stomach bugs have never made an impact on your life (THANK GOODNESS) and I don’t have to worry about you chatting about this topic in school. Now, I just have to hope that you do not start singing that song thanks to me. I guess I should brace myself since you will likely learn a lot of new tricks and words when you head into kindergarten in a few months.

Love,

Mommy

Percussion Playing Prowess

Dear NHL,

In the fall, when you decided that you wanted to play percussion instruments,  I wondered how things would go. With most of the school year and two concerts behind you, I can hardly imagine life without a percussion playing kiddo in our house. Though the bell set is a bit shrill at times, we can recognize songs when you play them. The only down side is the size of your kit that has to travel into school each week. I now know where to park to drop it off and where to set it down outside of school at the end of the day.

Band Lesson Day

While we were at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, we made sure to stop over by the drum area in Africa. Daddy and I knew that you would have fun experimenting on the different items that were there.

Disney Drumming

Of course, it was also interesting to watch your little brother follow you around. As you can see, one of you had an easier time switching things up, while the other needs to stretch a bit more.

Drummer Switch

Still, I think the moment that made me the proudest happened at Mimi’s house on Mother’s Day. She had a little keyboard. Suddenly, we heard a song and looked over. There you were taking what you learned from playing the xylophone to play the same song on the piano without any sheet music. Of course, I wanted to test this theory. When we went to Nana and Papa’s house a few days later, you did it again proving that you really have learned quite a bit. Keep up the great work. I can’t wait to see how much more you learn next year and beyond.

Love,

Mommy
