My little MacGyver

Dear NHL,

Last night, we surprised you with something. We were invited to a Pampered Chef Party at Christina and Tom’s house. Christina thought it would be fun for you and JSL to come and play with TJ. I did not mention anything to you until after school. You were so excited and quite helpful when we went to the store.

When we arrived, TJ was waiting at the door. He was so excited to see you. All of the boys went upstairs to make sure you were set to play. Eventually, we called the two dads down to participate in the cooking presentation (made sense since they are the cooks). I joked that at times it sounded like a herd of elephants were upstairs instead of three little boys. Then it got quiet. That always makes me nervous. For some reason, parents just know something is going on when there is no noise.

The noise level resumed and then again it was quiet. Shortly after this, you came to the stairs and called to Tom that TJ was really a mess. We told you to go back to playing. We probably should have listened. It seems that your guilt had gotten to you, and you were nervous about the mess that did exist. A short time later, TJ came downstairs and he was covered in something.

We had no clue what it was at first. Soon we learned that there had been unopened, still packaged finger paint in TJ’s room. From the bits and pieces we figured out you wanted to open it and got TJ to agree it would be fun. Not knowing how to open the top of the container you looked around for a tool. When Tom was cleaning, he figured out what you had done. Our little MacGyver had used a Hot Wheels like airplane to poke a hole. Yes, you saw that the plane had a sharp tip, popped it through the plastic barrier and voila! Thank goodness it was not a very large hole, that stopped the paint from coming out too quickly.

When I went upstairs, I was expecting paint to be all over everything. No, you and TJ had not  done that. Apparently, you at least wanted to paint on paper-like items and did not go to the walls or doors. The carpet was just the drop zone that was an unintended victim.

The Evidence

We talked with you about making good choices and to think about things. You know we don’t paint in bedrooms and should have brought the paint to the adults. As upset as we were, it was interesting to see that you and TJ also tried to clean things up. Tom had heard the water running. It was the two of you trying to clean up the evidence seen here.

Meanwhile, JSL must have just been the casual observer since he hardly had anything. Needless to say, you and TJ each had scrubbing sessions last night. We found more paint under the sleeves of your shirt and your shorts when we arrived at home.

Lesson learned by the adults: When 3 children are too quiet, finger paint may have been located, opened by airplane and used all over!

Thank goodness the damage was not too bad thanks to washable paint. With any luck, Christina and Tom will invite us over again (sorry guys) in the future.

Love,

Mommy

Free ice cream & Happy B-day Nana

Dear NHL & JSL,

Today, we had a very busy day. We started off going to get both of you new shoes for the wedding that we are going to. Of course, they did not have the right size in stock for NHL. Thanks to this, we went to the mall where another store was holding a pair for us. After we picked them up, tried them on and paid for them we decided to wander around for a little while. As we were walking, I remembered that Friendly’s was having free ice cream today from 12-5. I asked Daddy if he wanted to do it and he said yes. Since it was only 12:30, there was hardly a line and we got our ice cream fast. The two of you were very surprised with the treat and enjoyed it.

Ice Cream time from Friendly's

NHL, you decided that you wanted strawberry ice cream in a cone. JSL, you wanted chocolate, but we opted to do it in a cup to make it easier. Daddy had Apple Pie a La Mode, and I went for my usual Cookie Dough. We all enjoyed it and then went to several more stores and had a quick lunch.

After the mall,  we went to BJ’s to get a few things for the house and for the picnic for NHL’s class. By the time we were finished, everyone was really tired. We went home for a little while and then met Nana, Papa and Mimi at the diner for Nana’s birthday dinner. Things were a bit shaky at times since everyone was cranky, but we made it through.

Nana and her grandkids

We went back to Nana and Papa’s house to play for a while and celebrate Nana’s birthday with a little cheesecake. It was fun watching JSL playing dominoes with Mimi. Before we knew it, the sky was getting dark and it was time to go home. We had a busy day and hope to be able to run around and have some fun around the house or at the park tomrorow.

Love,

Mommy

A wedding we will never forget

Dear NHL,

It seems like yesterday, Memorial Day weekend 2006. It was a very special weekend for our family. Uncle I was getting married, so Aunt M officially joined our crazy family. You decided to make things more interesting. On the car ride to the wedding, I noticed something. Your eye was glued shut. *sigh*  This was the beginning of what we now lovingly call the Buffalo jinx!

Not only did you have pink eye, but the next day you spiked a really high fever. You were miserable and we were quite worried. Our doctor called in medicine for you (assuming you had an ear infection) so we could get you ready for the wedding. That weekend we became quite familiar with many pharmacies in the Buffalo area. Each time we had to do medicine, you fought us. You did not want to take anything, but we forced the issue.

On the day of the wedding, I was not with you much. I went with Nana to get our hair done. When I came back, you were running around the hotel room playing. As I was almost ready to leave, your temperature started to go up again.  I felt so guilty, but I knew Daddy would take care of you with Nana and Papa’s help.

The next time I saw you, you were dressed in your cute little tux. You had a job to do. The two of us were in the wedding and going to walk down the aisle together. You were so adorable, even with your ultra pink cheeks. It was two months before you would be three, but you took your job seriously. You watched over the pillow with the ring making sure nothing happened to it.

May 28, 2006

Then, the moment we will all remember. Uncle I and Aunt M were under their chuppah. The room was quiet listening to the rabbi reciting the ceremony. Suddenly behind me, I heard a familiar little voice loudly declare "I need to go potty!" Oy! Daddy took you out quietly to the bathroom, where you apparently had no business to take care of. The two of you came back into the room and sat back down. Seconds later "I need to go potty!" boomed across the room again. Thankfully this time around, Daddy kept you out of the room. Both times the rabbi was quick on his feet and made a jokes about how these things in life happen and when you have to go, you have to go.

That night at the reception, even while sick and heavily medicated, you danced like a super star. You loved seeing all of our family and spending time with them. I’ll spare you with a few details of what happened when we forced your medicine at the dinner table. Let’s just say we learned our lesson the hard way.

Why did this come to mind today? One very important reason is yesterday was Uncle I and Aunt M’s 4th Anniversary (HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!!), so it made me relive the day. Another is we are going to another wedding in a few weeks. This will be your second wedding and JSL’s first. Daddy and I already have a plan on where to sit so we can have a quick escape route just in case. You taught us a very valuable lesson at your first wedding. Now here is hoping that your second wedding is filled with healthy vibes, quiet little boys and is fun and memorable for different reasons.

Love,

Mommy

My computer savvy kid

Dear NHL,

It does not surprise me that you are a big fan of all things related to computers. I firmly believe that you would give up television if you could have your own computer. Thanks to Daddy, you have been learning a lot of skills. With all of this knowledge, you are pretty excited when we allow you to use the computer. You want  to go online to educational websites, and know all about what Mommy and Daddy do with Social Media and beyond.

Today, while Daddy was pulling down the fence in the backyard you were tired and asked to go inside. When we got inside, you immediately asked to use my computer. I agreed since you had not used the computer a lot this week. You immediately went to the internet and to Starfall.com. I thought you would go to PBSKids.com, but you surprised me with something different.

Once you found what you wanted, you were all set. I went outside to check on things quickly. When I came back inside, you were dancing and singing along. Of course, your little brother was excited to see what was going on. You let him climb up next to you and showed him the ropes.

Computer geeks in training

It has been so much fun watching you learn to do everything on the computer. I can not wait for us to teach you even more items that will keep you ahead in the future. With your new found love of Star Wars, you are most definitely a proud geek in training.

Love,

Mommy

Making Planters at Home Depot

Dear NHL and JSL,

It has been a while since we all went to Home Depot for their free Kids Workshop. We thought it would be a nice treat for the two of you to go and make something. Today, they had picket fence planters for kids to make and take with them. Papa met us there to watch and keep us company.

Picket Fence Planters

Today was a special day for you JSL. Even though you are probably too little, we decided to let you "build" one with Daddy. You had a lot of fun banging with the hammer. Of course, I think your favorite part may have been wearing your Home Depot apron and goggles that we brought with us. When we were done with the project and shopping around the store, you refused to take everything off and rode around just like that.

Little guy learning to build

NHL, you really liked this project as well. You wanted to do things on your own, but I tried to help you out. Of course, I messed up on something when I was trying to take photos at the same time. Daddy and I quickly told you it was so we could tell your planter apart from JSL’s. . . which technically is true.

Big kid building time

When it was time to get your plants, the always friendly Melissa allowed NHL to pick out the flowers. You picked purple and asked for a pink one for JSL. In the end, we had a wonderful time.

My boys together

Next week, they are doing something new and we will try to go again. If not, I hope we can go next month to make the soccer game. It has been so much fun watching both of you build things together.

Love,

Mommy
