For the Love of Crafting

Dear JSL.

You have become quite the little crafter. Watching this develop and seeing your face when you are busy working makes me smile, especially when you share your beautiful work with everyone. You are a lot like me and want to draw, color, make projects, and do fun art items. You like playing Nintendo DS, but would most likely pick a craft if you had the option. At school, I have noticed that your projects are also changing.

Kindergarten Pumpkin Art

Last year in nursery school, if you had made this pumpkin, I know it would have been one hue. Yes, that pumpkin would have been 100% blue. You could have used blue glitter and other blue items to accomplish this task. This year, it is much different. You are into patterns, rainbows, and adding colors to everything. I love watching your creativity soar. Thanks to this passion, we signed you up for Art Club and you had your first session this week. I went along with you and you adored the different projects. It was so much fun watching you explore new and different items.

Art Club Project

I can not wait to see more of your projects in the weeks to come. I am also looking for more exciting items to do over winter break together and beyond with you.

Love,

Mommy

Drawing The Lorax

Dear NHL,

This week you were home from school for a while because of Hurricane Sandy. It was just too windy here to go outside on Tuesday, so we decided to pile on the couch to watch The Lorax.

The Lorax DVD

We had seen it this summer while at a library program and enjoyed it a lot. When the movie was over, JSL wanted to go back to a craft activity. While we went off to do that, you watched some of the extra features on the DVD. One was learning to draw the characters from the movie. The only reason I knew was because you came asking for paper, pencils, and a clipboard. You were busy for a long time and I knew you were listening carefully to the instructions. Later on, I went over to your drawing and was very impressed.

Drawing The Lorax

You have shown an appreciation for step-by-step drawing books and videos. It really is fun to see them at the end and realize how you have worked to get to that point in the drawing. I can’t not wait to see more in the future with all of your other drawing books.

Love,

Mommy

Orange Giraffe Poem Tower

Dear NHL,

I adore when you tell me about the projects that you are working on at school. Of course, once they come home it is even more impressive. I love the creativity you show and the fantastic projects your art teacher comes up with. This latest one was no different. You picked the poem called Orange Giraffe to make a Poem Tower based on it. The giraffe was super cute. I love how the Model Magic marbled to make the perfect giraffe pattern.

Meet Orange Giraffe

When you look at the entire piece, it was really amazing to see all of the details included. It was especially cool to listen to you explain how you read the poem, made a big drawing, base of project was made, and finally the giraffe to attach.

I am looking forward to seeing what lies ahead the rest of this year in art and beyond. Oh and congratulations on winning the Word of the Week prize at school – very proud of you.

Love,

Mommy

Pumpkin Picking with Kindergarten

Dear JSL,

Field trips are a lot of fun to go on and, I have to say, I think they are even better as a parent. I had so much fun going with you on your first kindergarten trip this week. We all went to Indian Ladder Farms. It rained in the morning before we went and was chilly. Thanks to that, we had a lot of layers on. I also broke out your rubber cowboy boots in case it was muddy,

Hiking at Indian Ladder Farms

We went for a hike and listened to the leader of the group teach all of you about how the mountain formed. Then she showed you some of the fungus that grows naturally in the area. Once our trek was over, she took us over to meet the animals. You were definitely excited about this since we went here last year with nursery school.

Animals at Indian Ladder Farms

Everyone tried to feed the animals, including Rosie, some grass. You were not too sure about this because of her horns. Then, we saw Eeyore the donkey, who we had to keep away from. There were even some baby animals like big Rosie in the area with different critters. Our leader brought out a special guest for everyone to see up close. I was so happy that you agreed to pet the turkey.

After everyone washed their hands, we went to look at the apple area. The woman explained that because of the weather in the spring, Indian Ladder Farms only had about ten percent of the usual apple crop. This was the reason we could not pick our own apples. We still learned about the trees, went into a giant refrigerator, saw how the apples are checked, and then saw the cider making area.

After this, it was time for your class to have lunch. It was a beautiful view, but some pesky bees were not making it an easy dining experience. They kept trying to dive into the apple cider and all of the delicious lunches.

Lunch outside at Indian Ladder Farms

After battling the bees, we followed your class to the pumpkin patch to pick out one to take home. You picked out a great pumpkin, but then we noticed some areas that were rotting, so we went back to get another one.

Although it was cool, we were lucky that it stopped raining. Thank you for letting me share this adventure with you.

Kindergarten Learning

Dear JSL,

You have been a kindergarten kid for just about a month now. Mornings are still a bit rough. You say you are nervous and do not want to leave me. Still, the smile on your face at the end of the day tells me a different story. I can see that you are enjoying the time with your teachers, classmates, and learning.

First Day of Kindergarten Art

What I love is watching you after school each day. You pull our your Doodle Pro and teach me things that you have learned. You recite the letters and their sounds. You tell me words that begin with the letters. Even on the way into school, you like to rattle off things that you have learned. You are in love with centers. This time seems to be your favorite, especially when there are science activities. You have already learned about the five senses and it made a big impression on you. Just the other day, you were explaining to me how the eyeball has an image that is turned upside down as it is carried to the brain. The science teacher in me was so very proud.

I have also watched you talking to your big brother about math. I knew that you were talking about shapes (which you already knew) in class. What I did not realize until I was looking at your sheets that I had heard you say another word.

Kindergarten math - learning about vertices

Yes, you know how to identify a vertex on a shape. You can count them and the side and record the numbers. I was definitely impressed and you love sharing this information with me. The other item that you have been talking about a lot are apples. Since you are going to an orchard soon, you have been learning about how they grow. I can not wait to hear more about this subject over the weekend and next week. Thank you for taking me on this learning journey with you.

Love,

Mommy
