Transportation Time Fun

Dear JSL,

Two weeks ago, your class started a transportation theme. During this time, you made your own blue car, played with boats, washed cars in a car wash, designed your own train, and many other items.

  The blue car

There was also a giant class project. Last week, your teacher called one night to ask that you go to school in clothing for some major painting. We had that set, but forgot about your brand new white sneakers. Thank goodness your teacher from last year had rain boots that you could use for painting. When we got into school, there was a giant cardboard box on a plastic tarp. As soon as I saw the box, I had a feeling I knew what it was about to become.

This Tuesday, we walked into your classroom to see the finished project. It was an amazing creation. It had windshield wipers, wheels, headlights, the stop sign for cars, a door, and more.

The bus is finished

When we looked closer there was even a steering wheel and a seat for the bus driver. I have a feeling all of you must have had a great time going inside the bus together to sing The Wheels on the Bus as a group.

Another view of the bus

Of course, once I had the camera out to capture these photos, I had to get one with you next to the bus.

Ready to ride the bus

I know you loved this unit because of all of the fun items and you learned so much. I was so surprised to hear that you went on a real bus to check it out. You have grown up and I keep trying to forget that soon you will be heading off to kindergarten. Keep learning, growing, and sharing all that you do each day with me.

Love,

Mommy

Bunking it for a Week

Dear NHL and JSL,

Today marks one week since the arrival of your new bunk beds. It has been a challenging week. Change is hard and this was definitely a big change for all of us. Not only did bed placement move for both of you, but night time routines became different.

Getting used to the new bunksDaddy and I could not longer sit on the edge of NHL’s bed to make sure you were quiet and went to sleep. No, going to the top bunk was really an option. We realized that this caused some hurt feelings after day three when you declared that you no longer wanted bunk beds and wanted your own room. JSL was also upset about not being about to jump into NHL’s bed to give him a hug before bed. Giving up is not an option. We explained to both of you that this was a big adjustment for the two of you, Mommy, and Daddy. New routines and ideas had to be brainstormed to help both of you with these items.

Had the two of your stayed in your room when we were making the beds, you would have heard some complaining. This is not an easy task and will certainly be something that I cringe about. On Friday, while preparing for the furniture store to come back and fix something, I had to remove everything off the top bunk. I completely forgot where I was and stood upright on my knees. Ouch – hitting your head on the ceiling hurts! I think we need some warning labels on your top bunk NHL.

Boys in their bunks

Thankfully, once you are asleep, you both seem very happy and well rested. We all need to remember that it is going to take time, lots of hugs, and patience to get used to our new lives with bunk beds.

Love,

Mommy

Goodbye Crib and Hello Bunks

Dear NHL and JSL,

Today is a really big day. This afternoon, we are finally getting bunk beds for the two of you. We offered to let you each have your own room, but neither of you wanted to be alone. Since we can not fit two twin beds into the space, we had to make the bedding go upward.

We have spent the last two weeks going around looking at different options. We fell in love with a set of twin over twin bunks at Raymour & Flanigan. Then, we had to make the choice between the darker and lighter woods.

The options

I think the two of you liked the darker wood option for only one reason. You adored the pirate bedding and space items within the decorating. We explained to you that none of those items come with the furniture. Thursday night, we went to the store and a very patient man named Michael at Raymour & Flanigan helped us to finalize our purchase. Much to our surprise, there were still slots for delivery and set up Saturday.

This morning, we will be working on your room to get ready for the delivery truck. NHL, your bed mattress will be moving to the bunk bed, but the box spring and frame need to be stored. Then, you will be the new owner of the top bunk.

Moving on up

JSL, this will be a big milestone for you. You are finally getting a big boy bed. Your toddler bed, and old crib, will likely be given away or sold. When I took the photos of your room, my heart skipped a beat. Suddenly it hit me that my baby is growing up way too quickly. I have a feeling you are going to love your new bed, and hope that it will be more comfortable for you to sleep the entire night.

Bye-Bye Bed

No doubt that there will be more tears when we put everything away, but it is the right thing to do. The two of you need this change and it will create many new memories for the two of you as brothers. Daddy and I wish you many sweet dreams in your new bunk beds.

Love,

Mommy

Happy Chanukah Boys

Dear NHL and JSL,

So far, we have had a really nice Chanukah together. I think the only negative items have been the colds that are causing the two of you to be really miserable. The constant screams for tissues and leaking noses are getting a bit old for everyone. Hopefully, they will vanish before the end of the holidays.

Each night, we light the menorah and it is really amazing to watch the two of you.

You have grown up so much. I can not believe that you both basically know the Chanukah blessings and help to light the menorah. It’s also fun to hear you sing along to the songs that we play while eating dinner each night.

I do believe that the two of you get that Chanukah is NOT about presents, but about spending time together as a family.

Love,

Mommy

Menorah Making

Dear JSL,

Friday morning, you had a surprise at school. Your teachers helped you to bring something very special out to me. I was in love the moment I saw it.

Menorah 2011

Yes, your class had made these beautiful menorahs. My favorite part is your class photo from this year right on it. I also love how you designed the menorah with the sparkle stickers and real dreidel attached to it.

On the way home from school, you had a little concert in the car. Without any prompting, you belted out the following words over and over again.

Dreidel Song

Thank you for sharing all that you have learned this year in school. You have grown so much and are getting to be such a big kid.

Love,

Mommy
