Memories of my childhood – Giveaway

Shhhhhh. . . . I have a secret for you. Tomorrow is my birthday. As a reminder that my birthday is in December the temperatures finally took a major nose dive. This morning it was only 6 degrees outside with a windchill of -11! Happy almost birthday to me!

When I was in Elementary school, I have fond memories of my birthday parties. Many years I had them at an indoor pool and friends would come for Carvel ice cream cake after the swim. Of course, many years my goodie bag of gifts for friends was always Avon related. Why? Well, my mother was an Avon lady for many years. So we would give away funky nail polish, fun chap stick, or whatever was big at the time. I also recall having friends over and playing with the little Avon lipstick samples. Oh my, there were so many and they were all so very different, it was so neat as a young kid.

My mother stopped selling Avon a long time ago (more years than I care to mention), but my love of Avon has continued as an adult. When teaching, the homeroom teachers and I would buy our kids (all girls) Avon Christmas presents. Now, I often purchase makeup, chapstick, moisturizer, jewelry, Breast Cancer Awareness merchandise (love my pen from them), and even hair care products. Of course, the holidays are also a fabulous time to stock up on Avon items to add to gifts. I love their bath gels that are great with my knit washcloths.

Thanks to Joe the Photographer

Sunday afternoon we went on an adventure. It was finally time to do NHL’s five year portraits. For those counting, that would make it over two months since his fifth birthday. We decided to head back to the popular portrait studio that we used in the past. JL and I just were not impressed with the other place that we had his four year portraits done at and JSL’s first birthday.

When we arrived we were all dressed in red with our jeans on. Talk about getting looks from people later on in the day – LOL!

We were told to head into the first studio as soon as we arrived. When we went in a very friendly photographer came into the room. We learned his name thanks to NHL. He asked and Joe told him. NHL quickly told him that he knew another Joe, you know, the one in Blues Clues. Of course all that went through my mind . . . . Joe the Plumber!

We decided to start with family photos since JSL had not napped earlier in the day (our session time was 2:00). Needless to say, it is quite tricky to get a decent shot with all four family members looking at the camera at the same time. I kept blinking, NHL kept talking/smiling funny, and JSL wanted to walk away. If you have done family portraits you know exactly what happened. We managed to get one that was not too bad.

Then it was time to get the much anticipated photos of NHL with the giant number five, dinosaurs and his camera. Joe did a great job working with NHL. NHL definitely played it up. As you can see we switched his red shirt and I really like the ones with the short sleeved blue on more.

Once NHL was done Joe asked to try some with both of the boys alone. That did not work out too well. The overtired 17 month old kept walking out of the frame. We did manage to get one cute one before we switched gears.

Before calling it quits I asked Joe to try one of all of my boys. This time both of the little guys were getting tired.

We bought a package that included the portraid CD so we own the photos and can print them whenever we want. JL was quite happy about this. That would be why I was able to post this so quickly.

The rest of the photos from the photo shoot by Joe can be seen on my Flickr photostream.

Birthday balloon crown for Mimi

Today is a special day, it is Mimi’s birthday.

Happy Birthday Mimi!!!!

As I have mentioned before, my boys are extremely close to my grandmother. They see her as often as possible, love to visit her apartment to have chicken soup with matzoh balls (and other goodies), and more important to play and snuggle with her. JSL still loves to sit on her lap where she will sing him to sleep.

Mimi with the boys

Yesterday night we went out to dinner to celebrate Mimi’s birthday. Much to our surprise there was a special someone at the restaurant. It was none other than Mr. Twisty!

Mr. Twisty at Mimi's birthday

When Mr. Twisty heard that it was Mimi’s birthday he was very careful not to ruin the secret. He did not want to bother other people at the restaurant, so he made her a very small birthday crown. Here it is on Mimi’s head.

Mr. Twisty and the birthday girl

We all had a lot of laughs thanks to Mr. Twisty. He also made something special for NHL. NHL did not even need to hear the list of possible balloon creation. He immediately asked for a lion. ROAR!

R-O-A-R - lion by Mr. Twisty

After our delicious meal (thank you Aunt S and Uncle M) we decided to order some cotton candy. I was convinced to let JSL try some of it. At first he did not want anything to do with it, he simply played. Check out what he created.

Noodles a la Cotton Candy anyone?

Unfortunately for us, he soon discovered that the cotton candy was sweet and enjoyed it. Needless to say he was up quite late last night. Apparently the sugar rush got him, but not NHL. Here are both of the boys enjoying.

We all want to wish Mimi a wonderful birthday. We are so glad that you live so close by. The boys and I love spending time with you. We hope to make many more special memories together for years to come.

We love you Mimi!
