Fine Motor Skill Development

We are always working on crafts. I love making fun things with the boys, but I have another rationale for doing these items. Most crafts involve working on fine motor skills while being creative. Although NHL has received Occupational Therapy over the years, we need to practice to reinforce items at home. Doing these skills also helped JSL to stay on top of his game. Fine Motor Scissor Practice for Toddler and Preschoolers

The photos above were taken a few summers ago when working on a project with the kids. It reminded me of a post that I wrote for another project about working on fine motor development with young children.

It is no secret that I love to do arts and crafts. As a teacher, I used to make sure that there was always some way for children to express themselves artistically. Rewind to when my oldest was a toddler. We were having NHL evaluated for Occupation Therapy based on some fine motor delays. Suddenly, I was being asked why my child had no idea how to use scissors.

What?

You mean I was supposed to introduce my child to scissors before this point? I am not kidding. I had never thought to use them with my young first born child when he was a toddler. We did plenty of activities with crayons, markers, Play-Doh, and beyond. Yet, all of my child friendly scissors were far, far away from NHL. I think I was a bit too worried about the trouble he could get into, if they were near him.

We quickly changed this. I bought a Play-Doh set that included an extruder, scissors, and other items that would assist NHL with more fine motor skills.  At daycare and at home, we would make a lot of holiday themed activities. Small scissors were also purchased to help NHL to become more familiar with them. It is not the easiest thing to help a child learn to hold and use scissors properly. Their small hands can be awkward when first learning the motions needed for cutting. Luckily, there are now videos online to give assistance to families. We made a lot of projects to work on cutting.

Toddlers need to have plenty of fine motor activities. When my youngest, JSL, was a toddler, he used Play-Doh scissors early on. Regular scissors came soon after thanks to watching big brother use them. An easy activity to do with your child is making a collage. Collect a few magazines. Allow your child to cut pictures that they like. Let them use glue sticks to secure their pictures onto a larger piece of paper. The smile on their face when they are finished with their masterpiece will be priceless.

Magazine Collage Cutting Fun

As your child gets more comfortable using scissors, the possibilities are endless. During the fall, you can trace leaves with construction paper, cut them out, and decorate them to use around your home. Take your child’s hand, trace it, then make a turkey to get into the spirit of Thanksgiving. Have your child be a coupon cutting helper. Show them the dotted lines on the coupons to cut. Not only will they be working on a skill, you can start using them to save for more  arts and crafts projects.

What activities do you like to do with your children to promote or work on fine motor skill development?

Happy New Year 2013

It is so hard to believe that 2013 is already here. I am still working on a post about the year that was 2012. This past week was time to focus on being with the kids, getting everyone healthy, and going back to school tomorrow.

Snowman New Year Wishes

So for now, I am wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2013. Be sure to stop and enjoy those special moments while making memories with your own families in the year ahead.

It's Me

P.S. Thank you to JSL for letting me use his Snowman Project for my photo today. This was his kindergarten project that is due after break.

Thermal Laminating Fun

When I was teaching in a classroom, I was best friends with the thermal laminator in our building. I used it for student work, for protecting my reference tools, and making sure that decorations were ready to use for multiple years. Yes, I spent many hours learning how to make that giant thermal laminator get a work out.

For quite some time, I was toying with getting a laminator at home. The other day, A Frugal Friend posted about a one day special on a Scotch Thermal Laminator on Amazon. When she told me that she has used it for two years now and that I would love it, I was sold. Of course the one day price was even better ($16.99 – now under $30). Yes, I bought the Scotch Thermal Laminator 2 Roller System on Friday and it arrived Tuesday. Wednesday morning my kiddo (home sick) helped me to test it out.

Scotch Thermal Laminator

I asked JSL to find art that he had made. Of course, he picked one that would not fit in a pouch at first. Not to worry, we found some on a regular sized piece of paper and put it into a pouch. While that was waiting, I set up the machine. It was SO easy to use and the instructions were great.

Getting Laminator Ready

The machine did not take long to heat up. Once it was set, I simply placed the Thermal Pouch into the machine and it literally fed right in without me doing more. JSL was mesmerized and curious what it would be like after.

Scotch Laminator Testing

The artwork that JSL made was now protected and ready for him to take around and share with others. Of course, once you laminate one item you, you start to think about other things to create. My mind immediately went to maps for the little kiddo. He loves playing with them and using them for pirate treasure hunts. So, I pulled out some extra Disney Parks maps and put them onto a piece of computer paper. That was then placed into a pouch to laminate.

Disney Park maps in the laminator

JSL was in love and later on we made one more map so all four of the Walt Disney World parks were accounted for. In the end, I was happy with my purchase and my kiddo now can not wait to try the laminator (he says this in a Dr. Doofenshmirtz voice) again.

Items Laminated at Home

So my question this week is inspired by my new laminator:

What would you love to laminate if you had a machine and why? Yes, I am also using this to come up with more ideas.

Family Chanukah Banner

Dear JSL,

Your kindergarten class had to make a family banner. The banner was to express how we celebrate Chanukah. Each member had to trace their own hand, write their name, and draw their favorite part of the holiday inside. As we got started, you helped me to gather Chanukah glitter, markers, foam stickers, and more. As we tried to figure out how to fit all of our hands on, you instructed me that Daddy and I had to use our real names. We could not put Mommy and Daddy inside our hands.

You told me to do my hand first. I traced mine with my favorite color and then drew musical items. I love Chanukah songs and being able to sing them every night when we light our menorah. Daddy did his next and put potato latkes and jelly donuts. Then, NHL put presents and Chanukah gelt into his part of the project. When it was your turn you wanted to put lighting the candles and gifts. Then, it was your time to put things all around the banner. You had a lot of fun with this.

Chanukah Family Banner Project

I know you are going to have fun telling everyone all about your banner in school. You already enjoy doing Chanukah crafts during centers and telling everyone about the holiday you celebrate. I can not wait to begin the Festival of Lights with you and the rest of our family tonight.

Love,

Mommy

Orange Giraffe Poem Tower

Dear NHL,

I adore when you tell me about the projects that you are working on at school. Of course, once they come home it is even more impressive. I love the creativity you show and the fantastic projects your art teacher comes up with. This latest one was no different. You picked the poem called Orange Giraffe to make a Poem Tower based on it. The giraffe was super cute. I love how the Model Magic marbled to make the perfect giraffe pattern.

Meet Orange Giraffe

When you look at the entire piece, it was really amazing to see all of the details included. It was especially cool to listen to you explain how you read the poem, made a big drawing, base of project was made, and finally the giraffe to attach.

Giraffe Poem Tower Art Project

I am looking forward to seeing what lies ahead the rest of this year in art and beyond. Oh and congratulations on winning the Word of the Week prize at school – very proud of you.

Love,

Mommy
