Latkes and a Slew of Scarves

On Sunday, we had an early Chanukah celebration with my brother’s family, my parents, my grandmother (Mimi), Aunt S, and Uncle M. There were Latkes made from scratch thanks to Mimi and Aunt M.Latke making time

Uncle I even made eggplant burgers into a really delicious eggplant parm creation. These will definitely be something that TechyDad and I try again at our house.

When everyone was filled up from lunch it was time for the kids to open Chanukah presents. When we inquired about items that the kids could use for presents, I was asked to make the kids a scarf. Before I could start their scarves, I had to finish one that was on my needles for me. Almost finished here and debating the length.

Scarf Check

Then, I went to the store and picked out yarn for Cousin SG and BA. With some guidance on color selection from Aunt M, I was able to get two that worked with their new winter jackets.

Chanukah Scarves

I love the way they came out and am sure they will keep the kids nice and warm this winter. Of course, since these were finished I started another scarf for NHL, made one for Snowflake, and have a scarf request for Clumsy. Then, it will be time to get working on a baby blanket since the yarn I ordered came in.

Are you making any presents for this holiday season? I would love to know what crafty things you are working on.

Kid Who Loves Pottery

Dear NHL,

Last year, when you started at your new school, you were reunited with the art teacher you knew. She is an amazing inspiration and really seems to have gotten you excited about art. At the end of last year, you made a fish during a pottery project with her.

You kept talking about pottery for a while. Then, the summer came and went. Now, three months of third grade are behind us. Once again, you love to talk about art. Something that once was not a favorite is a hobby that you adore.

On Thursday, you came home with a package all wrapped up and you wanted to share it immediately. I asked you to wait until we got inside the house to make sure nothing was broken. We rushed inside and you ran to the table.

Within seconds you had carefully uncovered the precious pottery project that you had been talking about. Yes, this cute little owl now had a home with us.

NHL's Owl

I loved it and you knew that I was going to take photos immediately. Thank goodness you are good about that and helped me to prop it up. Then, we talked about how I used to take pottery in high school. Yes, even while taking upper level science classes, I loved to de-stress and enjoy my art classes. Perhaps this is something that you will enjoy as well.

I can not wait to see more of the beautiful creations that you make over the years ahead.

Love,

Mommy

Thanksgiving 2011 Wishes

I wanted to take time to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. May your day be filled with good food, fun, family, friends, and everything that makes you happy. Today, we will be spending the day with my parents. Preparing food, watching the parade, enjoying food, and watching Cars 2.

 Thanksgiving wishes

Tuesday, I joined NHL at his third grade class feast. It was a lot of fun getting to meet the children in his class, along with some of the very nice parents. It was really impressive to see how well behaved the class was and how they really cared for each other. Oh my, what a difference a year makes!

Third Grade Feast

JSL’s school had lunch together and then participated in an ice cream sundae party. Of course, we also were able to see the end product from his recent homework. The first turkey has the feathers that each child decorated the way they wanted.

Big Class Turkey

JSL asked to raid my sticker box. Inside there he found Thanksgiving stickers, Disney stickers, hockey glitter, and more.

JSL's creation

On another feather, we were asked to add items that we are thankful for. JSL kept rattling off items. His list  –> Family, My friends, Disney World, Sharing, Dinosaurs, Pirates, School, and Flowers. This is the class turkey of thanks:

Class Thanks

As we left for the long weekend, JSL handed us a turkey that he created with his foot and it was absolutely adorable.

Foot Turkey

The poem on the Turkey says:

This isn’t just a Turkey

As anyone can see,

I made it with my foot

Which is a part of me.

It comes with lots of love

Especially to say,

I hope that you have a very

HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY!!!

In addition to the foot turkey, JSL also made another little one that he brought home. He was even nice enough to hold it for a photo.

My little turkey

So many things to be thankful for this year. I hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday spending it the way that makes you the most happy.

Four Year Old Self Portrait

Dear JSL,

Yesterday, all of the parents in your school went in to chat with teachers to see how the kids are doing. All of your teachers are really great and talk with me in the morning and afternoon, so I knew a lot of what has been going on. Before we started, they pointed out the bulletin board that all of the kids in your main class had made.

JSL is hiding

Then, they asked me to pick out which was you on the board. They explained that they gave you mirrors and photos to do self portraits. I guessed a few times, then noticed the wrong names. I was stumped. Your teachers, E and L, mentioned that they tried to remind you that you are blonde. See, here you are with your still very light locks doing some writing practice at school.

Note he's blonde

As you can see, I was a little confused when I finally figured out which face was yours. Yes, you went with simple and different. My guess is that you didn’t like the idea of blonde being yellow yarn. This is your first self portrait according to you:

There he is

The rest of our meeting went really well. You love school, are adjusting well, and are growing up before our eyes. I was so proud when E and L told me about something you were able to do that others could not. You are such a smart little cookie and we are going to continue to work with you on writing and working toward reading.

Love you my little kiddo,

Mommy

Knack For Knitting

Knitting has been something that I have been doing on and off since I was in elementary school. Back as a child, I would sit on the front porch during the summer and fall months and knit with my best friend. In high school, it was something to do that would ease my stress. Fast forward to life as an adult, wife, and mother of two. I like to knit at the end of the day to help with stress levels.

Going out to the store to pick up some yarn for stress knitting is fun, especially when I can do it on my own. Selecting colors that will eventually become something is rewarding.

Stress Knitting Supplies

There is just something soothing about hearing the clickity-clacking of the knitting needles as the yarn flies through them to create stitches. Taking the yarn from hanks of nothing but color to making them into something concrete is rewarding itself.

Project start to finish

Seeing the fun colors all knit up just brings a smile to my face. Somehow the stresses just go right into the knitting needles and come out into something bright and cheerful.

Now I just need to find the perfect new yarn for a new project. A very special someone in my family is expecting a baby in February and I want to make the new little girl in our life something. So far my quest for good baby blanket making yarn has not been successful. If you have any suggestions, I would love to know.

Pssst . . .other knitting posts of mine can be found here.
